Lana McCarthy commits to Purdue

After watching some film, we may have found a diamond hiding up in New Hampshire. At 6-4 and with that body type you might think she’d be a slow plodding post - exactly the opposite. She has the ability to rebound the basketball and start the fast break herself. Extremely impressive for a player her size. Looks skilled as well - her 3 pt shot looks very fluid. Great rebounder as well. She seems like both the ideal post for KGs offense and someone we will need to survive the big ten. Finding a player with her size and build that is so agile and fluid is extremely rare.

A 6’4 bruiser post player being able to take the rebound and go end to end for the reverse layup while being defended, and then casually drill a 3 like it’s nothing, at barely 17 years old? Offer sheet be damned, sign me up! Normally I’d call this off the radar recruit a nice work in progress but her skillset is extremely refined for someone with her frame/age.

She has a nose for the ball and gets baskets for being in the right place. She goes left or right also. Sometimes in high school that isn't a given. Nice.

First, understand you just saw a seasons worth of her absolute best moments. Second, you were going gaga over Potts and Stoddard off of similar limited videos and then were quick to dismiss them when they didn't pan out and left. Third, she runs the floor like a Mack truck with two flat tires. She lumbered down the court and none of her moves showed any real quickness, just small defenders that gave ground as she pushed past them. She may be a good player, but that video is not indicative of much of anything other than she's tall, got bulk, and seems to have a nice shooting touch. Still glad to pick up a post with a Big Ten body, but your description and what I saw in that clip do not match IMO.

And I am not trying to start a fight, just stating my opinion that once again the board is hyping up someone to a level way above reasonable expectations and then people will inevitably say they never saw much in her once she gets here as they have repeatedly done with the last couple of classes of players. I am trying to moderate expectations to a more realistic level. If she was the player some have hyped her up to be, she would be a top 10 talent rated by the recruiting services. She isn't.........

You’re correct about the videos, it’s amazing the tools these players have these days. Looks like a nice get, maybe a player in the 60-75 range I’m guessing?

First I was not going Gaga after either of them. I saw the potential in Stoddard due to her being 6’4. But her high school film wasn’t anywhere near McCarthys. She doesn’t have an outside shot, she couldn’t dribble. The skill level pales in comparison. What she did have was size and length that you simply can’t teach/develop. But her skill level was not at McCarthy’s level. Not even close. But you can improve that. I never thought she’d come in and produce as a freshman particularly offensively - but I was hoping that defensively she would be able to help out but her body was not developed enough to produce. But was hoping she’d develop into a rotational player by her junior year. She was ranked in the top 100 because 1 - her exposure level of living in Indiana 2 - her size and impressive wingspan has great potential - and still does. Judging from pics of her recently she has worked hard to fill out her frame - something I’ve said repeatedly on this board she needed to do to compete in the big ten. McCarthy’s frame is already much more suited to compete in the big ten as a junior in high school. If you look at this film of what she is capable of doing at 6’4 and a junior in high school and don’t see her immense potential than your are even more ignorant about basketball than I thought.

More clips of her playing AAU completion this past summer. The play that warranted her the Purdue offer.

Again not trying to start a fight or going after you BUT

I've been here long enough to hear the hype over Langston, Murdock, Mioton, and so many others that someone hyped up that they were clearly better than the recruiting services had them rated. None of them panned out. I'm far more trusting of the recruiting services than a fan on here based off of a few seconds of highlight film. Nothing against you. And if she puts the ball on the floor and tries to dribble more than a couple of feet in college she'll get her pocket picked. Also in class ball in New Hampshire I very much doubt she played against more than a handful of defenders that were 6' or better. That's why her ratings from the services are far more accurate and reliable than her hs stats.

Also, if you closely watch all the clips of her, she has virtually no height on any of her jumps. She is 6-4, but she plays shorter due to not showing hardly any leaping ability at all, neither on her shots nor her blocks, they are all flat footed or tiny hops that you would struggle to get a Lafayette phone book under her feet. And despite your insults and calling me less knowledgable than you repeatedly for years, my predictions year in and year out have been FAR more accurate than yours, so flame me at your own expense... :p

Still she does have a BT type body for a post and as long as no one expects her to be especially quick or fast up the floor, she should be a serviceable center for us, and someone we really need to fill a void in our roster.

Lol. I wondered how long it would be before Michael showed up to tell us why we shouldn't be excited.
Be excited, but keep it reasonable, expect someone that looks and plays more like Rikki Woltman or Mary Jo Noon than McKenzie Holmes is all I am saying. She can help, but she is not some diamond that will make us a sweet 16 team. She's a 70-100+ rated level player with good size and bulk that could possibly develop into a good player.

Actually, your take is solid on this one. I do think it’s a good get, however, on highlight tapes everyone looks good lol

For once I want to see a kid post a highlight reel of them dribbling off their foot, shooting a 3 over the backboard, half-assing it back on D, cherry picking, etc.

A high light reel is meant to show what a recruit can do. I do not look at them and say this is a perfect prospect and has no faults, weaknesses or things to work on. But they can show what all the prospect can do and if it’s a lot then it’s safe to say they are fairly developed for where they currently are at in their basketball development. Obviously the older they are the more advanced their skillset should be if they are developing as a legit high major high school prospect.

I simply said that as a 17 year old junior in high school with an offer list that’s not extremely impressive - she has showed she can do a lot for a post player of her size.

She has a nice looking jumper all the way out to the 3, is a 3-level scorer something that is Important to have as a high major prospect. She has shown to be a tenacious rebounder, defensively she has very nice timing on her blocks, and she showed she has some nice ball handling (for a post), nice passing and court awareness and can play away from the ball pretty fluidly, all impressive for a 6-4 wide bodied post player.

Obviously there are things she will have to improve on - getting more athletic will be one of them; but considering her offer sheet - I was impressed with how developed she seems to be for her age.

I did not say she’d be an all American or all big ten 1st teamer nor did I say her addition will get us to a final four. I would not say that about really any recruit because you never know how anyone will develop. Micheal just likes to take any positive post on this board, blow it up to this type of projection (that is completely false) - and then his awful attitude towards everything in life will then be some how justified.

Oh I was just joking around. I’ve never seen her play. She could be the female Brad Miller for all I know.

You are born athletic or not, that doesn't improve. Foot speed can be improved with work, jumping abilitu can be improved some, but mostly what you are born with is what you get for athleticism. That's why programs take a flyer on someone with few to no skills but very athletic. I guarantee you every high school player at any height can dribble as well as she showed in those highlights. I like that even with very limited vertical she times blocks well, but I don't know if that will translate to college when the level of competition goes way up from the small school ball she is playing in NH. Her passing looks promising and hopefully something she can build on.

Pretty much agree, but I do think an out-of-shape athlete or one who gets into the proper conditioning/eating routine can improve their abilities and skillsets, as you say. I think that can up their athleticism a bit due to better stamina, strength and confidence of what they can do. I knew a guy who played NAIA basketball, at first only due to his height. He was a timid player. When he became obsessed with working out and proper diet, he became much more coordinated, ready to mix it up, and a more confident player. We are probably mixing definitions, but I would say he was somewhat more athletic than before. That is probably an exception though.

You do not need to be able to jump out of the gym to be a successful big ten post player when you are 6’3+. Mackenzie Holmes and Monica Czinano - two very productive, all big ten post players are definitely not athletic freaks . Neither can jump out of the gym but both have amazing fundamental post skills and at 6’3+ have a nice frame able to dominate games physically at the college level. I don’t know if it’ll translate to the pros Monica has yet to catch on with a team but when a player is 6-3 6-4 and is fluid with her moves and is funamentally sound - she will have the potential to be a good college post player. And this is in no means comparing McCarthy to either of these two so don’t try to go there.

I am not saying she needs a 20" vertical to be successful, but a 2" vertical leap makes her far less effective as well. Hopefully with strength and conditioning she can get a couple more inches of leap, and I don't know what your definition of plodding is, but her 4 second "fast" break sure looked like plodding to me and I was surprised the ball did not have a flat spot the way she pounded that dribble slowly up the floor.
Bottom line, she looks like a Rikki Woltman level player, maybe better, maybe not as good. Nothing in any of her videos including ones you did not even link here shows any quickness, speed, leaping ability, or quality ball handling. She's big, strong, and has a nice shooting touch against players 6" shorter than her. What she will develop into in college depends greatly on her work ethic and the quality of coaching she receives IMO.

She has displayed the capability of effectively guarding an AAU level - guard (not some HS New Hampshire kid) out on the perimeter - coming away with the block as the guard tried to use her quickness to speed around her. If you think that doesn’t display some good lateral agility and quickness for a player her size then it’s futile debating basketball with you.

If you are talking about 23 in gold in the first aau video, that's the same girl guarding McCarthy later in that same video down on the blocks, and didn't look like a good player regardless. Unless you got more than that I remain skeptical.
