Not much new here, but found it interesting that that Brohm Corp "stuck out" on the transfer portal to pick up a RB. While I don't think we "hit a homer un" we did get RB Dylan Downing from UNLV, so I think his "struck out" comment wasn't 100% accurate. Of greater news regarding RB, was that high number of RBs who transferred OUT of Purdue even knowing that there was tremendous opportunity for someone to emerge.

There’s a sleeper player on offense. Payne Durham. Not that anyone doubts he will be good, but he’s a guy who I think.. if he stays healthy and gets in a decent situation, will Have a long and productive nfl career

We will see. Plummer didn’t look his direction last year. If he is the starter, he may not get many targets.

Elliott was the perfect fit for Nord. Both the two you name were smarter than they were talented.
They were. But the funny thing is.. when I think of David Blough, I have no doubt that he’d make this offense function well if you threw him in there. Right now, my biggest optimism is that O’Connell CAN do okay.. I fear our OL will allow pressure and defenses will widen out in coverage because of the lack of fear that horvath will rip off a long TD run. I don’t have faith that the game will slow down enough for Plummer

Blough has the 8th most career passing yards in B10 history. I don’t think most Purdue fans are even aware of that.

I think he looked unspectacular enough at times that you could trick yourself into thinking “oh, David Blough just comes along next right?”

same with DJ Knox. I have seen no evidence yet that we have a QB or RB who will play better than either. It could happen, but I haven’t seen it yet.

and before anyone thinks horvaths numbers make him better than Knox, Knox was doing what he did .. yeah with rondale Moore and brycen Hopkins. But we currently have a TE and TWO wide receivers who are more talented than Isaac Zico and Terry Wright.

and before anyone calls me an IU fan, yes if a few things click we can be a really good offense and I’m not thinking we will be terrible.. just Potentially not an offense that wins shoot outs

The offense is gonna be at least fine provided no massive run of injuries .. if we have 11 decent starters on the field it will be okay.. the biggest question mark to me there is holstege, who I thought was a backup center and looked like he didn’t get much push or hold up great in pass blocking. But let’s just presume he’s not exploitable ..

O’Connell
Horvath
Bell
Wright
Anthrop
Durham
Long
Witt
Hartwig
Holstege
Miller

that lineup will be.. fine. They’ll move the ball consistently against bad teams and be a threat against most teams. Though drives will sputter. To me, one big way we can get worse is if hartwig can’t be the every down center and we have to go with garvin. He is exploitable at this level.

if we have even two of the following five things happen… you can plan on us being good. All five would be an offense who will be dangerous.

> either O’Connell or Plummer puts it all together. This would mean being smooth and having the game slow down for Plummer with quick decisions. For O’Connell it would mean showing a little extra foot speed and being even better mentally.

> doerue is healthy and becomes a consistent back who can do the things horvath can do, but with the ability to threaten long runs. This would cause the defense to have to be honest against bell and Wright.

> tj Sheffield becomes a fluid receiver who has a lot more stubblefield in his game in addition to his athleticism.

> cam Craig is healthy and takes the lead role at left tackle.. playing well.

milton Wright is more consistently involved in the offense and can not only make the big play but get open for a lot of short grabs and show he is a quantity as well as a quality threat

this is a lot different than the defense .. where I currently have faith in exactly three guys to be players who can’t be exploited easily at this level .. Karlaftis, Trice, Allen.. we still need 8 guys to prove they are just middle of the road big ten starters

I would definitely trade Horvath for Knox.

There are two QBs who I appreciated more and more with each passing year besides the obvious Brees and Orton … Joey Elliott and David Blough
Loved Joey. David was just what we needed. They both have that "must win" mentality, something you can't teach and you aren't born with.

Absolutely. I thought Knox was pretty good. Probably a middle of the road b1g RB. Horvath is a bottom tier guy. Probably better suited to be a situational back for blocking or short yardage situations. Definitely should not be a feature back.

the big question. do you compare this team to last year's team, or do you compare it to our competition. if our team has improved, but our competition has improved a lot more, than the distance between us is greater and the resulting action is we will be less. I've seen a lot of teams that were better than their previous year only to see their record be worse. and at the end of the day, what reall y matters? your record? or that your team was better than last year? IU and bowl selection committees tend to believe your record is more meaningful than comparing your team to it's previous year.

I get the point, however, IU’s measuring stick starts game 1 at Iowa. C’mon Hawkeyes. If IU loses that game and their facade of 10-2 hype goes away faster than this.

Have you heard what the local sports news guy in west Lafayette has to say about IUs talent level? He makes my comments on IU look like I’m saying they are a 3-9 team.

I believe Purdue will turn it around by next year, but even then IU will be a threat. We are entering an era where big ten wins will be harder to get than they ever have been
