Kendall Transferring

Feel bad that he is going but it is probably for the best at this point. Hope the separation is amicable.

On to the scholarship math. That leaves us with 9 scholarship players next year and no seniors unless one transfers is. 4 open scholarships for next year. If we don't fill them or fill them with one-year players then we'll have that many 2017 scholarships.

Seems like a lot of players are transferring all over this season. I don't remember ever hearing of so many.

Curious to see who this opens a door for.

We saw this coming for almost two months. Best of luck to Kendall, whether he plays elsewhere or not for his final season of eligibility. It's too bad that he didn't develop more of an all-around game with toughness and confidence included during his time as a Boiler.

With that stated, this is the scholarship situation now:

1. Basil Smotherman (RS Jr.)
2. Dakota Mathias (Jr.)
3. Vince Edwards (Jr.)
4. Isaac Haas (Jr.)
5. P.J. Thompson (Jr.)
6. Jacquil Taylor (RS So.)
7. Ryan Cline (So.)
8. Caleb "Biggie" Swanigan (So.)
9. Carsen Edwards (Fr.)

Per the release it sounds like they are allowing him to explore options but leaving the door open for him to return if he wants.
I guess since he's a senior, and we have that many open, it's ok. I would not hold his scholarship otherwise.

Right. I think they are doing him a favor by leaving that door open but given our numbers it doesn't seem like a big deal to give him a couple weeks or so to sort it out. If it helps preserve the relationship with that family then it is worth it.

Has he graduated or would he have to sit out a year with the transfer?

He would have to sit.

If BS has added a decent three and can defend the 2, then I could see him taking Davis's spot in the lineup. If you are referencing opening a door for recruiting, well then my post is senseless and without merit of any sort.

Assuming he leaves:

Junior - PJ Thompson, Dakota Mathias, Vince Edwards, Basil Smotherman, Isaac Haas
Sophomore - Caleb Swanigan, Ryan Cline, Jacquil Taylor
Freshman - Carsen Edwards

I think there's very little chance he'll return.

That could be but how many transfers have you ever heard where they are allowed to look around but retain the option to come back? Weird. It's kind of like when someone decommits and says they are still considering the school they are decommitting from. Rarely do they end up at that school. Like I said, I'd bet that is just a diplomatic move on Purdue's end that we can afford given our scholarship situation.

need a 3 and a 4 so badly it hurts .... probably two, one each year. Boy would Jankovit change the look of this.

After further reflection, in '17 we need a 2, 3, 4, and 5 pretty badly LOL. Katy bar the door. We shall see the direction the program is heading based on the strengths/weaknesses in that class .... or earlier when we see who we are putting the major pressure on.

Not many that I can recall off the top of my head......but this situation also has some rather unique circumstances. I tend to agree that in some way this does reflect well on CMP (even discounting from the fact that there is currently not an immediate scholarship crunch). In the end, whether KS returns or not.....I expect that CMP was up-front with him about playing time and his opportunity.....like him or not, or whether you agree or disagree with the methods or how he measures it, CMP makes everyone earn their minutes from what I see.

On the de-commit analogy, yes it's rare.....only one I can think of recently is James Blackmon, Jr. with Indiana.

I think the up-frontness that another thread mentioned about CMP telling Bane that he wouldm't offer him until he found out what Kendall was doing is another example of an honest recruiting manner. All I ever want from anyone to be upfront. Tell me the deal and let me decide what to do with it. I see stupid promises being made by certain other coaches ... ones we tend to discuss ad infinitum on this board.

I wish Stephens well. Now that pretty much guarantees that Purdue will pick up another player or two for next season.

If true, I'm glad to hear it. I really hope that Stephens' career can end on a positive note, whether at Purdue or elsewhere.

Mathias will most defiantly start. I'm guessing we will see the following
5 Haas
4 Swanigan
3 Edwards
2 Mathias
1 C Edwards

I know the grass is always greener but he'd be better off here playing next year and working to show he can compete than transferring and losing another year. I know of very few that pulled this last year transfer with the year sitting out that flourished in the new system.

With KS leaving.....And the chance of Biggie going ( though he should not and probably will not ) but there is always a chance.....We need to sign somebody and not put all of our eggs in the 2017 class...As long as MP has been here ...He has not put a fence around northern Indiana in the recruiting world....And expecting to get graduate transfers year after year....Id much rather have a guy more than 1 year....Either way .....Good luck to KS in his future basketball ...where every he may end up

Expecting a 3* recruit to come in day one and start at the point is a tall order.
Well technically he's a 4 star now, but I don't disagree with your point.

I think it's a very classy move by Painter to allow this but it also limits our ability to fill that spot. With 4 openings we probably weren't any way. But I'm open to 2 5th year guys coming in now for sure. We need it for the depth if nothing else.

I deeply hope Vince is the "new" Vinnie from the last couple of games and that Carson is a lot better than I think he will be as a freshman PG. That's a very tough position to fill. Defensively, this lineup is a bit scary, but I'm not sure incredible D is still needed. On the other hand, I have no clue who is going to spend those extra hour sin the gym this summer .... or who we might get as a grad transfer.

So that leaves Cline, PJ, an unknown Smotherman, and a virtually unknown Taylor .... mystery is a fun thing.

Biggie will be in the gym more than anyone, you can count on that.

I'm completely against allowing him to shop around and then return if he can't find a better offer. You're either in or out. No in between. This is probably being done out of respect for the Boiler legacy family.

If he returns at this point, it will be awkward at best.

yes, but perhaps that doesn't limit his choices? perhaps he wants to bank as many as possible...minus one?

Yep. You are correct sir. I do see him getting good minutes between the three and four backups.

If you don't forsee Mathias or Ryan Cline being a regular starter at the 2, Vince Edwards would be a better option there than Smotherman right now. Maybe Basil has greatly improved in his RS year, but going off of past data and viewing experience, Vince is the better choice right now. Really any of Carsen Edwards, P.J. Thompson, DM, RC, or VE are possibilities at that spot. There's room for other backcourt additions as well.

If PJ is our starting PG, we're in trouble.

Recruiting, keeping and developing PG's has been a huge weakness in the CMP era. Hopefully that starts to turn around with Edwards next year but I don't honestly know how much better a freshman Edwards will be vs. a junior PJ, if any better at all.
