Creighton beat Texas Rio Grand Valley 99-86. The game was close through out and was a 5 pt game with under 7 min to go.

Kalk finished with 49 points on 20-22 shooting (2-2 from 3) and 7-8 from the FT line. Added 11 boards, 3 blocks and 2 assists.

They were missing Pops Isaacs (guard who transferred in from Texas tech) who caught fire vs us and hit 3 or 4 3s in a quick stretch.

Only 2 others were in double figures for Creighton (ashworth the PG and their backup big man).

I did not watch, but reading comments, saw that UTRGV had one 6’9 guy and 2 6’8 guys as their tallest players and they tried the ol’ Zach edey strategy….let Kalk shoot as much as he wants but bottle up the others and hope they can’t make shots. Almost worked.

But either way, an almost 50 spot for anyone is impressive!

Mbako scoring 31 was the other one that I noticed, he’s going to be really good I think. I’m not sold on IU being a great team but I think he’s going to be really good.

Need to see him consistently do that against teams that are more physical than SIUE. Also if SIUE hits 3-4 more 3s, the game is different.

IU’s system is still the exact same. Don’t take many 3s—and don’t shoot them very well. Plus the other team was getting WIDE OPEN looks that they just missed.

Carlyle isn’t a very good shooter (at least not showing it) and looks to be rushing his shot/pressing. He’s not the main guy and it seems like he’s struggling a bit to understand that.

Rice is very quick but wasn’t that impressive, maybe that changes.

Reneau still can’t guard or shoot outside (better from FT line tho).

Ballo…man I’d be unimpressed with him if I were an IU fan. He looked out of shape and was letting a less physical, smaller team get rebounds. He converted a lot of easy looks late when SIUE had to be super aggressive to get back in the game, but was pretty dreadful for a lot of the game.

Obviously, things can change after the first game, but they also had 16 turnovers vs a team Not really pressuring that much—lots of unforced errors.

IU will struggle to score once B1G season gets here. They also seem to struggle on defense. They looked best when Reneau was the five.

Mbako was on fire and still IU scored only 80 against a weak team. Without Mbako IU was 2-11 from three. A lot of complaining about paying Ballo 1.2 mil for somebody "who is just TALL"! Galloway is still their best guard. Rice and Carlyle struggled against a weak SIUE team rated at 292! SIUE plays at Illinois Friday.

I think IU will shoot in the low 30’s from deep. Teams will target Mbacko and force others to make shots. Can anyone else step up? We shall see.

I actually agree with all you said, I just think of any player he’s the one on that team that can be really good, I realize it was 1 game against a mediocre at best team.

For sure. Now the main thing will be, does woody recognize that and will be run action to get his player the ball in his hands and open looks?
