Just finished watching the Carroll game and have some impressions. First, a comment and a compliment to the worthy opponents, Carroll is well coached and plays within their capabilities. They were not at all afraid of playing against the big guys. If I were an opponent of Carroll, in their respective class, I would be very afraid of going against these guys. They were pretty damn good.

Okay, now to discuss Purdue. Mathias, Haas, PJT, and Vince Edwards are known commodities and are very good college basketball players. They looked and played the part. Enough said. Swanigan is gone. We all know that and the team must compensate. The good news is that they have. I thought they would, so that is not the main news.

The two new guys that impressed me were Haarms and Eastern. Let’s not be coy here. Haarms has benefitted from half a year with the team, and that puts him just a bit further ahead of Eastern. He is a heck of a player. Maybe the best center Purdue has put on the floor (counting Biggie as a power forward). More coordinated that AJ and Haas, and taller as well. I like that he can put the ball on the floor while guarded closely, and not turn it over. He is very unusual for a center, and he will be a nightmare for opponents for the next few years.

Eastern is a whole ‘nother story. For a raw freshman, he is impressive. His ball handling and court vision is superb. While watching him I kept thinking “what will he do when he gets open”, not “what might he do if he gets open”. This player is going to be an all-BIG player by his junior year. He is going to be fun to watch. His passes and his dribble drives were outstanding. Once he gets acclimated, he is going to be rock solid as a PG.

The rest of the recruits showed flashes. Wheeler and Ewing both have terrific potential. They will be important next year, but I don’t think they will be major contributors this year. I am glad they are here, and they will be great players in the coming years.

I agree with a lot of things you're saying but one part. I would not say he's the best center that Purdue has put on the floor. At least just not yet let's see more before you say that. And I'm just curious who would you rate the top 3 centers that played for Purdue?

Haarms - more active and more enthusiastic than either Hammonds or Haas. And I think that will be infectious to the whole team.
Eastern - the sky is the limit.

Turnovers where a concern. Can't give the ball away like that and expect to be B10 Champs. Careless and sloppy.

Joe Barely Cares, Russel Cross (when healthy). Steve Sheffler would be the best three so far, in Purdue history. AJ Hammonds, Bavis, and Haas are the next in line. I may have been mistaken about the use of "best" regarding Haarms. It's fair you call me on this. I do think the Haarms can be better than both AJ and Haas in the long run. He might fall short of joining the big 3.

What about Brad Miller?
Good question. I thought Brad did better as a pro than he was as a college player. That might have been because of his surrounding cast, or it might be because I watched that Stanford game where the refs swallowed their whistles (I did think bribery was involved at the time). I thought Brad was beaten and bullied by players that should never have been able to do that. His lack of aggression in that circumstance caused Purdue to miss out a Great Eight/FF achievement. So I don't rank Miller as one of the better players at center.

That's why they call us Big man U. What an impressive list of centers.
IU posters on the national board are going to have a field day with this comment. They have been making fun of the "Big Man U" narrative for like a week straight.

What IU fans think is irrelevant. Not criticizing anyone specifically, but Purdue fans are, in general, way too fixated on IU. We've had two outstanding years in a row and are about to have a third that, frankly, could be even better than the last two. We lose a lot to graduation this year, but recruiting is trending in a very positive direction, and I think years like this one (and the last two) are going to become the norm rather than the exception. Win totals in the high twenties and fighting deeper and deeper into March? Yeah, I'll take that.

We're better than IU and have been for two years.

Carry on. :)

Maybe we should call them little man I since they don't have any big men

I thought they just had a roster full of forwards? haha. I get what you are saying. I was just pointing out it will definitely be mentioned on the national board by "SNU".

Those pos don't have any thing to talk about this year so they come over on this board see what the B10 champs are talking about.

SNU is a POS and has been scared to show his face here for years. Who cares what IU fans think.
He used to show up here every summer and make grandiose predictions about IU reigning supreme in the B1G in the upcoming season... wonder why he stopped coming by?

I'm always intrigued that William Franklin is never listed among our best centers in Boiler history.

SNU is okay. He is good for a laugh or two, and he can add some real opposition perspective. He often posts tongue-in-cheek, expecting to get a reaction. I would not give him an inch, but never take it personally.
