July 2017

Here is what I received in an email...

In theory it could be 2 more years of Hazell. 2016. Then 2017 the new AD starts in July, he can't fire a ball coach then. 2017 another Hazell season.

I want to make you aware of an announcement that President Daniels will be making today.
Last summer, I informed the president that when the calendar flipped to 2016, I would be 18 months shy of my retirement date of June 30, 2017, and at that time Kate and I would head back into the stands. I encouraged him to begin having discussions with the Board of Trustees on a plan for selecting my successor. Today, he will announce that such a process will commence.
There is no way to predict how long the search and selection will take, so it is prudent to begin now.
In the meantime, we will continue executing Plan 2020 – with a focus on improving athletic and academic performance – and working on the Football Master Plan – namely phases 1 and 2 of the facility projects along with fleshing out details of subsequent phases while continuing to seek financial support. In addition, we will dedicate the Pete Dye redesigned Ackerman-Allen Golf Course and will have three major vendor contracts to bid. Finally, we will be updating our rolling 10-year financial plan in 2016-17.
So, while the Board and the president are conducting their business, we will continue our work full steam ahead.
Few people are afforded the opportunity to serve their alma mater in a capacity such as I have for the last 23 years, and I look forward to continue doing so for the next 17 months as we help our student-athletes in their quest to win championships – in the classroom, in competition and in life.
Kate and I thank you for your passion and support.
Boiler Up! Hammer Down! Hail Purdue!

You dont start a search committee today for a hire 18 months from now. The successor will have an overlap period. Hazell is on the clock now.

That's what I took from the article on the front page. Inevitably, I believe what will happen is the new AD will phase in to the job. This really handicaps the pool of talent to get UNLESS what is agreed on is that Burke is a glorified manager who just walks around and doesn't do any work. The new AD will be responsible for two major hires relatively off the bat as I believe Hazell will be gone in the next two years and I think the women's program needs a new coach as well (I'm looking at your Stephanie White!)

Burke has the VP title they can transition him into. Let the new guy focus on fixing the football mess.

I seriously doubt White leaves the WNBA to coach at Purdue.

Who would be a decent candidate? I honestly hope we leave the "Purdue Guy" mentality and find the most talented, forward-thinking person we can, regardless of their ties to our school.

Wonder what criteria they will use to pick the next AD. I think Daniels loves Burke and I'd expect them to try to find someone willing to play a role similar to the one Burke has played which has pretty much been to do the best he can do with what the BOT allows him to have.

DH isn't going anywhere after this season. Gonna be another one to go yet.
I really agree with this. Burke or not, the $6 million to go away becomes $4 million to go away, due to that excellent deal we gave him giving him 100% of his salary, not a smaller percentage of his $ if terminated.

Furthermore the new AD will be Morgan 2.0.

More realistic candidate and a potential very good one if the notion is to get someone with Purdue ties is Katie Gearlds who has done an outstanding job at Marian University.

This should be an interesting time ahead, particularly for those folks who have been steadfast that Morgan is the single biggest reason - and some have even argued sole reason - that Purdue's 2 revenue sports (football in particular) have not been on par with the rest of the B1G the past half dozen or so years.

I think hazell's retention had more to do with the ad situation more than the money. Would you want Burke having a third swing at hiring a coach?

adding on to this, you're going to sell the next guy on being able to shape the football program as he sees fit. Who would come here if they weren't allowed to fire the HC? He may ultimately choose to retain Hazell but there won't be any restrictions or mandates, IMO

Purdue or a good college coaching job would be a HUGE step up from the WNBA. A WNBA coach only makes something like $50K- I read that recently. Even if she made $150K, Sharon Versyp is in the $500K range, three times that. WNBA coaching would be like coaching in the Canadian Football League. There is no money there.

So lets say that Purdue finds its AD replacement this summer. That will basically give the new AD a year to evaluate the programs and see what they think. More specifically it will give the new AD a chance to evaluate the football program. I am sure they have a certain type of coach they like and have worked with and can hire that new coach after this upcoming season. This is great news for Purdue football fans.

I think this is most likely as most AD hires/fires etc take place on academic calendar lines.

Hopefully the new A.D. candidates don't read Mitch's proposal to siphon athletic funds off to the academic side.

wish there was more new info today, i thought we already knew this.
if we attempt an AD-in-waiting, i hope it goes better than some coaching transitions.

edit: i guess i learned about the search committee members.
n.cross can't vote for herself right?

Was just going to say this. I know a couple years ago, Mike Thibault was the highest paid WNBA coach and he was rumored to be making near $200k. Versyp signed an extension in 2014, making her salary in 2015-2016 just over $600k. The WNBA is a huge step down financially than coaching a good college team.

Yeah but per hour the WNBA might pay more- it's only 4-5 months out of the year, and no recruiting.

1. This announcement neuters Burke from making another hire. That is very positive to me.

2. Selection committee announced - that means the process is starting. Vs we are going to think about a committee.

3. With the timing we aren't under the gun and can perform a national search ( doesn't mean we won't screw it up)

4. I also think with the timing - I would expect candidates to be "in the process" this summer and fall. Therefore, assuming the football team continues on current downward trend, the decision process for that program will be well defined in time to make a change at end of next year. As someone mentioned above. DH on notice.

5. I would like to see us get an "outside". But I think we need a Midwestern outsider - not an outsider from California or Florida.

6. I'd like to see younger - I like the direction of the 35 year old general managers that we are seeing in professional sports. Granted an AD is a bit different...but I'd be willing to try.

Your candidate would be Josh Whitman. Finalist right now at Illinois. Indiana guy growing up. Current AD at Wash U in St. Louis which is very strong academically. Might be 40 years old? I would be concerned if they went the Greg Christopher route or any of those guys at D1 schools without a football program. We need to focus on fixing football.

Article in the J&C about potential candidates threw Nancy Cross' in the mix for AD. If it happens I'm out of here and may burn my diplomas.
That would make no sense- if for no other reason than she is only a couple years younger than Morgue.

Nancy Cross should not even have a job in the athletic department, let alone the athletic director position.

Unless it is an interview to fulfill a diversity requirement?
Otherwise, thats a funny joke.

Josh Whitman needs to be the guy in my opinion. Need to get out the "Purdue guy" mentality. He's young (36), bright (was a lawyer), has local ties (grew up in West Lafayette), was a former Big 10 athlete (also played in the NFL), and seems passionate about all his teams being National Championships.

People who knew him back at Illinois loved the guy. I have never heard a negative. Played on some really good Illini teams.

Yeah from everything I've heard he's a terrific guy, smart, and people genuinely seem to love him. I know Jeff Washburn thinks highly of him also. Reading twitter, Illini fans seem to think very highly of him and hope he's their AD. If we get him, we'd get a guy considered a good, up and coming AD and we'd also upset some Illini fans. Win-win in my book.

Hate to say this but if Nancey gets the position then we definitely know that Mich is driving the AD from the back seat!!!
