To divert a bit from the obsession over point guards….

I didn't really see Jacquil Taylor play the little he was able to this season.

Looking at his stats, his FG % is good, got some solid rebounding numbers, but seemed to be a bit turnover prone. Of course, this is in 42 total minutes of playing against up and down competition, so hard to really judge too much from that.

Whether or not Hammons is back, what can we expect from him - particularly defensively? What can we not/what are his drawbacks?

Do we know Painter's thoughts on his progression this year even without playing?

I don't really expect a whole lot from him offensively, and I think he's known for being a good rebounder. But will he be a lost puppy on defense, etc?

He looked very raw offensively and definitely needed the redshirt year to get up to speed defensively. I also think he will benefit greatly from a year in the conditioning program, as he looks naturally slim. Hopefully his injury issues have healed and won't be an issue in the future.

I'm hoping that he can provide some athleticism and height from the 4 next year.

I'm excited to see what he adds to the team next year! He has a high ceiling I think but he was very raw this year. I noticed he looked like he had bulked up some by the end of the season. Added strength will help him a ton.

Great potential but it ill take awhile.
Agreed. He has several guys ahead of him and it seems like it will be a challenge to get more than 10 minutes per game this year. Might be a junior before he gets his chance, and hopefully he is ok waiting that long.

We have had a really bad streak with redshirt freshmen in the past 4-5 years. I can't even think of a positive contributor who was redshirted during Painter's time here. Let me think:

Jay Simpson - Unfortunate career though during his limited playing time he didn't do much.
Marcius - Waste of a redshirt since he transferred when he looked like he could finally contribute.
Anthony Johnson - Unfortunate circumstances (I think his grandmother was sick, right?) but was never a major contributor.
John Hart - Terrible offer by Painter and even a worse decision to redshirt him...

Before these I think it was Teague and Landry in their junior years IIRC.

Did we have anyone who redshirted his freshman year and ended up being a major contributor?

Good point overall, but:
Simpson - nobody knew his medical condition when he was shirted. It was thought he had asthma and needed conditioning IIRC. Not having shirted him wouldn't have helped.

Marcius - He played better after the shirt. The fact that he left was on him - didn't want to compete for PT but there's no question his final year (especially the second half) he had grown as a player tremendously.

Little AJ - bad fit on the team.

John Hart - no opinion of whether the shirt helped or hurt, but totally disagree he was a "terrible offer" - solid role player with shiny moments and solid athleticism. Probably helped raise the competition in practice. He was a last minute roster-filler IIRC.

If a team is only going to rotate 7-8 players in regular league minutes, what's the harm in red-shirting inexperienced or under-developed players?
