So what is the latest news on the recruitment of Jacob Epperson? We need to get this kid! I think he could be special for us! Would love to see him in gold and black! I hope CMP is working hard on this. He would round out a really nice 2017 class for us! With him and Haarms in the lineup we would really have some length.

If I remember right, he isn't announcing for a while.

Just watched some Epperson video...wow. Really athletic seven footer! He and Haarms on the floor together is a fascinating possibility. Lots of offensive skills and shot blocking from both.
Mix them in with the rest of the class and it is loaded with length and athleticism.

Wait, we have the possibility of having a fantastic 17' class? I could of sworn it was already over for us that we failed miserably in this class?

How is this possible?!?!

I'm pretty sure I saw him at football game on Saturday. My son and I both thought it was too bad he had to see our pedestrian crowd against Wisconsin. Had a tall man with him.

Wait, what's this about two 7 footers on the floor at once?????

If no one leaves early for the NBA or transfers after this season, Purdue will already be at 13 scholarships next season.

'17-'18:

1. Smotherman (RS Sr.)
2. Mathias (Sr.)
3. V. Edwards (Sr.)
4. Haas (Sr.)
5. Thompson (Sr.)
6. Taylor (RS Jr.) (might eventually receive a sixth year of eligibility)
7. Cline (Jr.)
8. Swanigan (Jr.)
9. Ewing (Jr.) (JC transfer)
10. C. Edwards (So.)
11. Haarms (Fr.)
12. Wheeler (Fr.)
13. Eastern (Fr.)

Gotta believe CS is gone after this year.
Don't see anyone else leaving unless BS or RC have another run-in with the law.

2. I wish everyone would stop with the 6th year talk for Taylor. Let him finish out this year and next and move on. Why would we want another year??

Exactly this......Painter will look for a Spring signing and lets hope it is Epperson or some stud PG.

Love the depth, length and athletic ability of the future......

Very excited to see Ewing play in Black and Gold right away and the growth of Wheeler and Haarms.

Not sure why everyone assumes CS is gone. Next draft is going to be loaded & while I think CS is a great player, I'm not sure how high he would go.

If he averages 20-15-4 for the entire season, he is gone. Biggie has improved greatly. Purdue benefits from another year of Biggie, but Epperson would be a four year guy and that would benefit the team more in the long run. Biggie needs a monster year to get drafted and he certainly is having one.

I don't believe it matters where he is "projected" to go in the draft this year. It brought him back for this season, but won't keep him for another. 1st round,2nd round, D league or Europe he is gone.

Draft position is not a concern...he simply wants to get to the League and get to a second contract as soon as possible(if he can), but he wants to play professionally in some form or fashion and get paid regardless ...may not be the best logic, but it is what it is...he nearly left this year when there was a better than average chance that he would not even get drafted.

Only if using the term "fantastic" very loosely, and even then, only if Epperson does ultimately commit.

Say what you will, but Painter only landed one of his high profile/targeted recruits...and, it was that commitment that salvaged the class to this point.

It was by no means the class that anyone envisioned or hoped for...it has turned out better than expected given what happened early on no doubt, but, it is not as if it is a class that is better than who Purdue is ultimately chasing and hoping to compete with in its own conference, never mind nationally unfortunately...and it puts a lot of pressure on recruiting now for '18 as well.

I have heard the same...and from some that I have heard it from that are close to or in the program even, his getting minutes at any point is the least of his problems or issues.
It's sad. Hanging out with the wrong crowd. Gonna regret it someday.

Just rumors. I have friends and know people who are friends with Cline... he's not usually the type to make boneheaded decisions like his recent incident. He will move on from this without another issue in college in my honest opinion.

Isn't Eastern a quality PG? I wouldn't say "stud" which I guess would be a 5 star but pretty happy we signed him. Let's see with CS. After two games he looks pretty dominant but its too early to tell IMO.

Taylor's going to apply for another medical redshirt after this season, so he's not really "finishing out" this season. If he's healthy enough to play in 13+ games next season (assuming he is back), that WOULD count as another season of eligibility but I think it's likely that he will be granted another injury RS for this season. The NCAA usually grants as many as 2 injury redshirt seasons for a player, but I've never heard of anyone getting 3 or more, so this will very likely be the last time Taylor will be granted a RS.

I've not seen anything official of him applying for a RS for this season. Is that speculation on your part or have you read that somewhere?

Since a successful RS request would result in a scholarship being used, does the school have input/control over that request?

I'm not trying to bash Taylor. He has/will be given 5 years and that is enough. There is no benefit to the team of a 6th year. Let him get his degree and move on.

We're not even obligated to give him a 5th year, let alone a 6th, see Spike.

On the flip side, he may decide to leave on his own as a grad transfer to get more PT, like Sandi did.

Purdue would have to apply......and it would have to be after the season because the medical hardship waiver is predicated on the injury being season-ending. A lot of this is obviously speculation on our part, but IMO CMP will handle this and similar situations appropriately (like with other redshirts) as he has done in the past. That doesn't mean "mistakes" won't be made (or everyone agrees with the decisions), just that I expect CMP will be direct, honest and as fair as possible.....JMO

I would love to see JT get back healthy on the court and have a productive career.....but if not, so be it....more importantly, I would hope he get his degree and have a productive, healthy, and successful life outside of basketball after he graduates.

And Biggie is one of those loaded players. Remember, he was 17 at a portion of time last season due to reclassifying. He is still only 19 and has shown immense improvement from one season to the next. If he can continue the trend of 20 and 10 games and eventually end the season sniffing 16-10-4, he will be a first round pick. Not many guys in the last 10-15 years in college basketball can claim those numbers...and those that have are usually picked in the top 15 places.

The knock on Biggie last year was his apparent disappearances at times last year and his weight/lack of mobility issues. I think those, at least the weight/mobility issues have been cleared....let's let the whole season play out to see where he progresses on the court skill wise. Right now, there aren't much better ball players at the 4/5 position in the country.

I didn't say we didn't already sign two stud PG.....I said Painter will look to sign another either Center or PG in the spring, so please do not assign negativity to my post.

Hate when people don't read the post correctly......my post said nothing about who we already have so why twist the comments to make it look like I was dumping on who we already have.

I have made it clear I am happy with all who have signed so far.....I have added more clarity so people cant spin it negative.

Spot on. One class was responsible for Painter getting 2 sweet 16's and a shared B1G championship, a top 10 class nationally that had 2 top 50 guys and 4 top 75. One 5 star guy is the reason we can compete this year, and even at that, I think many will be surprised/upset with where Purdue finishes at the end of the year compared to "Final 4/B1G champion" thoughts some had/have.

People can get excited and pumped about a guy ranked in the 70's and a number of project types in 2017, but those types of classes have not led to anything special under CMP. If we are realistic, we need some more top 25 or at least top 50 players, especially in the backcourt, if we want to compete for something more than top 5 B1G finish and getting beat in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament.

If we are realistic
Which is something you clearly are not capable of being.

Painter has a good class coming in and no matter how badly you want it to suck, that just isn't the case. You come on here and spew the same unfounded nonsense constantly with all your points being refuted.

You're already writing of this class before they even play their first game and by your own comments, basically writing off this season before it barely has even begun. That is why you and posters like you can't be taken seriously because you simply are not objective due to being blinded for your biased hatred of all things Painter.

I would still like to think he'll be back this year to help the team down the stretch, which would eliminate the need to apply for a 6th year.

I don't wish any ill-will towards the young man. I know my frankness on this subject might touch a nerve with some, but this is the basketball forum so I was/am just focusing on the basketball side of it. I too am hopeful that CMP will make the right decision.

Hey Dry,

I didn't read it that way.....always good to get varied perspectives and opinions IMO.

I wasn't referring to you when I said hit a nerve (we're good). I just know that my stance on his 6th year sounds harsh and some will have an issue with that, which is fine. I have seen multiple people posting about a 6th year as if it's fait accompli. I just wanted to state that I thought that was premature if not flat out a mistake.

Right now he is projected to return in February. If he plays a minute then Painter has made his decision.
