It's unofficial

If true, we are still relying on Bobinski and/or Grimes to hire a decent replacement. If memory serves, they are the ones that thought Walters was the guy less than two years ago.

It's going to be an interesting next few weeks. Quality candidates are out there. Can Bobinski bring one of them to Purdue?

I'm willing to give some benefit of the doubt. I disliked the walters hire from the get go, but no one knows what a late December hire is like from an ad situation.

I doubt Ryan walters was in the top 3 of targeted his but Cincinnati screwed up and hired a terrible lville coach in the 2nd cycle of the carousel.

Bobinski has been a decent enough AD and if he gets a competent to great hire there really isn't much to complain about for his tenure.

If the worst knock on him is making a terrible hire in a bad situation idk what to say, the only worse move would be to keep him on for 3 years...

I don't know what Bobinski has done to generate any trust in him but if you trust him then good for you.

The bright side here is that it is near impossible to hire anyone as bad or worse than his last hire. The bad news is just hiring someone better than Walters is a really low bar and he could do that and still make a poor hire.

What candidates do you like? I haven't spent too much time exploring possibilities.
IMO: Ryan Silverfield at Memphis checks a lot of boxes and can probably bring some players who are capable at the B1G level.

I'm also coming around to the Bronco Mendenhall idea. He's not going to blow anyone away, but he's a capable experienced coach who can probably stabilize the program.

Jay Norvell has a B1G background and made solid progress in 3 years at Colorado State.

Chuck Martin took a while to turn Miami (OH) around. But they've been very solid post-Covid.

Not committed to any of these guys, just a few names to chew on. Silverfield is probably the closest to a home run hire. But, the other 3 have at least some program building credentials. No idea if any of them would see Purdue as attractive right now.

Looks official. I feel bad for the guy, but he simply wasn't ready, and the ND and IU losses really showed that. I hope he has a chance to rebuild his career somewhere else.

Teams can improve quickly with the right hire (look down the road at IU), but unlike Cignetti, I don't know if I see any obvious choices out there. I think UNC is going to grab Chadwell, who would be one of my top choices.

Announce new coach same time as release W, try to keep guys, get jump on portal !

They’ll make good choice, remember, a broken clock is right twice a day, it’s time!

John Sumrall at Tulane has done a good job, but I'd rather have an offensive guy. Silverfield is an interesting choice, and like you I'm coming around on Mendenhall.

I am not a fan of character assassination. Purdue is at fault here for a bad hire. Walters was over his head and trying to survive and I hope he does well wherever he lands.
Let's hope this is a lesson learned.

Agree 100%. Felt the same about the Haze firing. Purdue has to acknowledge that in both cases they brought in guys who weren't ready for this gig.

Someone with actual football knowledge needs to be standing behind Bobo with a cattle prod when he makes decisions about a candidate and Grimes should have no part in the process whatsoever.

There are many worthy candidates for fans to choose from. What is not being talked about is if any are actually interested in coaching at Purdue and how much Purdue is willing to spend to attract a coach.

My guess on both counts is that very few of the name coaches would be interested in leaving their current job to come to Purdue.

And that Purdue isn’t going to spend what it would take to land a decent coach.

I will boldly ask the question when Walters was hired, who were the other coaches interviewed for the position? For some reason that list has been remarkably kept secret.

So, when you were hiring managerial candidates in the business world, you routinely shared the names of those NOT selected with everyone?

I know I never once did in my 30+ years - for obvious professional reasons…
