It's amazing what a fairly well-played game can do for the lack of next day comments.

Congratulations on the win. It's nice seeing a lack of negative posts, but most of the bad things got cleaned up for yesterday's game. Let's keep moving ahead and get more Ws.
You said it and we all think it, but remember, besides the debbie downers (that every board has) we also have the trolls lurking in the shadows.

And to take over your thread, LOVE seeing the spy on the QB. This guy wasn't as mobile as some already played against (and will play against) but it was nice seeing TFL on the planned QB keepers. I noted the front page headline that Walters took over the defensive play calling? If so, Amen to that! Also loved to see Mockabee come back in after the fumble, even with the great play of Tracy and Downing. Like the "stretch the field" passes, like them even better when the receiver (Burks) can haul it in and keep it, outstanding catch. Great play by Yanni with OC out, if he can keep it up I'd love to see them both out there at the same time.

Now, let's go beat Iowa!

Missed yesterday's game, so this is just based on highlights and analysis:

This looks like a solid win. Illinois might not be very good, but anytime you beat a conference team by 3+ touchdowns you've done something right. A third straight demoralizing home loss could have sent the season into a tail spin. Instead, Purdue now has a chance to build something positive going to Iowa, a place where Purdue has had success in recent years.

The run game is starting to look good. Purdue put up 190 rushing yards for a second consecutive week, and against 2 B1G defenses. The trio of Tracy/Mockabee/Downing could turn out to be really good, especially if the line keeps opening holes.

Defensive pressure: good things happen when Purdue brings it. Purdue hasn't had much success with a 4-man rush in recent years, so it's good to see the coaching staff get creative with blitzes.

Purdue didn't get down early. Maybe that reflects the quality of competition. Purdue took command in the 3rd quarter and didn't wilt in the fourth. That's progress. Also, limiting turnovers really helps. Turnovers erased any chance of comebacks against Syracuse and Wisconsin.

I think the “Walters needs his guys” or “Brohm left no talent” lines as BS. This game showed that we have the talent to win 6-7 games this year.

Unfortunate we blew some early opportunities.

As was said in the OP, cleaning up the minor penalties, lining up correctly and executing assignments leads to winning football.

Yeah, the Syracuse and Wisconsin losses were tough. They might have cost Purdue a chance at a bowl game. Still, I think we have to give a new staff a few games to find their footing--especially with a first-time head coach.

Walters needs to guide this team through a tough stretch of games that starts Saturday in Iowa City. The team has to stay focused on improvement and not get killed by the likes of Ohio State and Michigan. The last three games are manageable if Purdue can get there in one piece.

I agree, if Purdue beats Iowa, which I feel they can, then the team has turned things around , just like to have a couple early loses flipped to wins.

While I agree with most of what you said, I'm not sure why anyone thought this would be the year to beat Wisconsin. Not that you're literally saying that, but I just don't think that game is one that will cost this team a bowl game in that manner.

Yeah, Fresno State was more of a missed opportunity than Wisconsin. Purdue had the lead in the fourth quarter in that one. Wisconsin just owned Purdue from the kickoff (as is tradition now).

CRW's made several changes for the IL game and I applaud him for doing so!!! He called the Defense, and didn't play man up on D with every snap.
Hartwig punished the IL D Line yesterday as did Miller.
Better coaching, scheme changes and a healthier line-up was on full display Saturday.
Boiler Up!!

Agree on both counts. The Fresno loss might really hurt come December.

Throw MI and OSU out. Play 4 quarters like the Boilers did for 3 quarters against IL, this could be a fun season...

Michigan and OSU are good but haven’t looked like world beaters yet. Play our best game and we can make it interesting at least. Don’t think we can win but want to see us compete.

The beatdown of the Illini was clear evidence that Purdue has the capacity to learn and grow

I didn’t hesitate to call out what I felt were deficiencies in coaching and execution in previous games, and I won’t hesitate now to congratulate the team and coaches on a superb game plan.

Keep it up!!!

It is always nice to see a win, but I don't think it is fair to call a post negative just because it is pointing out the truth. The truth being that so far Purdue has not shown to be a very good football team. Now there can be numerous reasons for this, new coaches, new system, injuries, lousy play calling, poor execution, etc. But calling the truth negative is a mischaracterization!

And head coaching has its learning curve, same as every new job. Where is the line between detail and obsession? Different for every coach. Probably different for every team.
