It Wasn't Just Pitino... Jurich over $5m

So I think we all agree that Louisville deserves the death penalty.

But for how long? Five years seems right to me.

Five years is what SMU got, correct? I think UL is probably the most guilty in this whole investigation so a 7 year sentence I think is probably fitting in this instance. From there, you go with 5 year and 3 year death sentences depending on the severity.

What Louisville deserves and what will happen are two different things. The NCAA doesn't have the balls to give them the death penalty. They'll get a slap on the wrist and will remain a top ten program, just like UNC.

In fact, I predict Louisville will not drop out of the top ten at any time in the next five years. That's how toothless the NCAA sanctions will be.

Did the University of Michigan get the death penalty for the Ed Martin affair? I personally, think that was the worst cheating scandal in basketball history.

Well sorry to inform all of you Louisville will probably just get some scholarships taken away and that's it. This investigation came out of gate Like a Hurricane now it's downgrade it to F1 tornado

I'm not so sure... Louisville seems like the kind of school that would allow the NCAA to look like they're doing the right thing by giving the death penalty without seriously affecting anyone's profit margin. Well, aside from Louisville's of course.

Let's be realistic! Neither Penn st or Baylor were given the death penalty! Admittedly their infractions didn't include cheating! The problem is if the NCAA finds over 50 schools involved, they will probably just send out a memo! The more dirt the NCAA finds on all schools, the lesser the penalty! What did unc receive?

Apples and oranges. The crimes committed at both Penn St and Baylor were exactly that: crimes, violations of criminal law. Neither school violated NCAA regulations. The guilty parties should go to jail but NCAA sanctions are not warranted.

Having said that, I agree that Louisville will not get the death penalty nor any meaningful sanctions. The NCAA simply lacks the spine to impose severe penalties.

In all honesty, I think the NCAA is just trying to ride it out until Roy Williams retires...

Not sure I agree. The UM scandal had a booster giving money to 4-5 kids. This shoe scandal involves the coaching staff of the college. Yes, Fisher and company may have turned a blind eye to what was going on, but they were not (to my knowledge) active participants in the cheating.

At Louisville, the coaching staff was directly involved in the hookers, and now directly involved in the under the table money, and that under the table money has been going on for much longer than the Ed Martin hot tube action. You also have the issue of Louisville getting caught with the hookers, but taking no further action to clean up their program or to regain institutional control. You can almost see the AD involvement in the cheating. Very bad! I think death penalty bad.

That was definitely one of the worst. But I think the difference is that the Ed Martin affair was considered a lack of oversight and control by the university. At Louisville it appears that the university was controlling the events. Ad to that the Pitino slime factor from past stories, which the university ignored.

In all of history there is only one acknowledged return from the dead. DEATH is FOREVER!!!

The Michigan Ed Martin affair involved actual criminal behavior - Ed Martin was laundering money through the basketball program. It involved the Dept of Justice, FBI, and the IRS as well as the NCAA. [The IRS got Al Capone] Ridiculous and ingenuous to say the University did not know when their basketball players were driving $50,000 cars and living in off campus expensive apartments. So if the NCAA let that go, Louisville will not suffer the death penalty because Fischer claimed not to know and that is exactly what Pitino is claiming.

Beth, Louisville will not get the death penalty because the spineless cowards at the NCAA HQ in Indpls are curled up in the fetal position and they lack the teeny, tiny snippents of gonad tissue needed to make a forthright decision. They have no testes at all. They are shameful goons.

As always, the NCAA will make forthright statements and then do nothing.

My bet is that Louisville does get the death penalty. They are the poster child for the current scandal and they are repeat offenders. The Louisville Athletic Department has been a black eye for the NCAA and they are a great example of what has gone wrong with college sports on many levels.

And he just get rewarded with Nassir Little, a top 10 recruit! He has been allowed to cheat constantly and here he lands a kid alleged to receive $150k to play for Arizona. I hate cheaters and Miller and Roy are both cheaters.

Folks, c'mon.

That AIN'T gonna happen.

NCAA representatives are on record stating the SMU 'death penalty' was a major, MAJOR mistake. In short, no institution should ever go through that again.

That's not excusing UofL, it's just stating the reality of the situation.

Should they be severely punished? Yes. But, it's unclear what that should look like.

I agree with your statement that the crime at Penn St. was a violation of criminal law. However, there was perjury involved by the AD and the leadership of the University. That right there is worthy of penalties by the NCAA. The farce of this situation is that the penalties were reduced after half their duration expired and that is bad practice by the NCAA. Wonder if there was a little palm coating from PSU that facilitated that? So, now I agree again that the NCAA lack the spine to perform the responsibilities of their charter.

Kelvin Sampson says "Throw the book at them"! I agree with Boilerman1973. Things seem to be losing steam which is not good. All the focus seems to be on the Cards and they will get a slap on the wrist. Sean Miller and Bruce Pearl using Pitinos ( Sgt Schultz) past excuse "I know nothing!" UNC signing more 5 stars. Business as usual. I am hoping justice will prevail.

Heard a JC coach this AM say that they expected a couple more schools/coaches to be named by the FBI this week.
BTW U of L is down to only Padgett on staff since they put two others on paid leave yesterday.

If the death penalty is too much, then simply take away scholarships. Take away one for every recruit that took money or screwed a hooker. By my count that is all 13. Let them continue to play ball, but with all "student athletes". Real Student athletes! You know, walk-on's. That way the school's record of wins and losses will be more reflective of what they should have achieved without cheating. ..and the alumni who tastily approved of this trash will have to suffer through losing season after losing season. The irony would be rich.
