Skip Holtz, but I would rather see D.Mullen or Brock Spack as the new H/C at Purdue

It's been confirmed that he's interviewed. But don't read too much past that.

I just have a feeling that when the music stops Purdue will be left without a chair and have to settle for someone who is a safe hire. They need to make a hire that not only gets people to the ticket box office but someone who has a proven record on the field and on the recruiting trail.

If mb2 wants to hire asap at seasons end,
We may not be able to wait for other dominoes to fall.
Or we really sold choice A (fleck, whoever) to come

If Purdue hires or shall i say settles for Skip Holtz then I'm done with Purdue football. Hiring a guy like Holtz will be disappointing with many better options out there, but not surprised with a ND guy doing the hiring.
Oh without question. If there is another loser licker coach hired here why even have football. Just get rid of it altogether and let's just switch to IU sports. I hate to say it, but if that's the message they're going to send then students should send it right back by enrolling at another univeristy. Lets see those sniveling old hag administrators try to keep their pay and jobs with declining enrollment amidst dropping the football program.

J&C expects a coach to be hired this weekend. That would suggest we aren't going with a plan B coach.
With big time jobs like LSU, and potentially other domino jobs like FSU, Texas opening giving way to other P5 jobs, the "Plan A" guys may stand pat and wait- we don't have that luxury.

Hire Skipper?? I would rather have Flipper. He can at least balance a ball on his nose. If this happens, it is obvious that JPC (plus alumni, fans, and etal) need to clean out more than the coach and AD. This is the definition of insanity. Someone there needs to take some marketing classes so that they understand their customer.

I'm not sure a big time school is hiring Miles. Fleck may wait. But big time schools will be moving hard this weekend too. Dominos will start to fall quickly.

This interview with Holtz this late in the game may suggest he is a Plan B candidate in case the Plan A candidates decline.

And apparently Texas just opened up. Time to move even faster to lock up Fleck or one of our other top choices.

Texas opening up doesn't really change things for us, IMO. Herman was never going to come here and more than likely Houston is going to go for someone with a better track record than Fleck. They may take Major Applewhite, Lincoln Riley, or another hot shot OC. That is what has given them success in the past with hires like Art Brile, Kevin Sumlin, and Tom Herman. Historically, Houston is about on par with Purdue and floating around .500 but Purdue is in a P5 conference (arguably one of the easiest divisions in the P5). A move to Houston for Fleck would not make sense with his ties to the Northeast and Midwest unless he is reaching simply for money rather than longevity.

For Fleck, I think it comes down to if he thinks he can get to 8 wins next season. If he thinks he can, he won't lose much luster next season if he can win his MAC division again next season and holding out for a better than Purdue gig is probably the right decision for him.

My guess is we already has a handshake agreement with someone. They (Purdue and new HC) won't announce until late this week or SUN. This way new HC can talk to anybody with out NCAA violations (he is not the coach yet). The new HC is assembling his staff and contacting current and potential recruits. Probably sign contract this week.

Skip Holtz would not be much of an upgrade in my opinion. He couldn't win at South Florida, he definitely won't win at Purdue. We will be stuck in mediocrity or worse for another decade at least.

Yeah, I think that is where the search firm really came into play, they did all the leg work to get an agreement in principle. So someone currently coaching isn't really talking directly to Purdue, but his agent and the firm are working out an agreement and laying all the ground work so something is ready to be signed when the regular season ends.

Really, not sure why you bother with a search firm here if you aren't operating this way as figuring out who the candidates are and who you want shouldn't be that hard and really you want a sports guy (like an athletic director making those decisions) and the search firm handling the leg work negotiations.

Two people that while not in the know, but certainly with connections to those that are, shared on Saturday that those that they had talked with or heard from also had pointed towards Holtz...with Fleck the other name.

Holtz would be as some have said already an uninspiring choice, never mind one likely to make any significant difference, and certainly not in any short-term time frame.

That said, while Fleck is a hot commodity, so was Hazell...Fleck has no doubt done more, but, still not sold on him either...never mind I am really hard pressed to believe that he is sold on Purdue.

Mullen would be a steal and I can't believe that he would even consider Purdue, while Spack would be without question the worst choice as the next Head Coach in my opinion.

Really difficult to believe that if an announcement is being made this weekend as suggested that it is going to be any sort of monumental hire...the kind that Purdue actually needs.

I can't imagine it's Holtz. That's not the type of flashy hire MB2 would make in the first weekend of widespread hiring. I'm still thinking it's Miles if it is announced this weekend.

If he is not the Purdue coach he cannot talk to Purdue recruits.

I'm guessing Miles or Fleck. Anyone else and the fan base is probably going to be disappointed unless it's a big name out of left field that no one is really talking about.

I like Miles' attitude. I think he'd be able to recruit and not buy into all the loser excuses as to why PU is hard to recruit at.

I think he could get PU on par with Wisky and MSU where you're contending every year and potentially in a playoff scenario every few years.

We don't have to compete with OSU and UM resource-wise, we just have to beat them on the field when we have the chance.

I think Fleck wants to stay in the Midwest, and in line w your valid theory, he can wait a year and think nd.

The big boys won't be calling Fleck. Even though he's done very well, not many coaches jump from the MAC to elite P5 jobs. Shoot, even Urban Meyer went from BGSU to Utah, who wasn't even P5 at the time and he was definitely considered the next best thing at the time.

Fleck would be silly to wait around...Texas, LSU and others won't call him now...not until he wins some on the P5 level

If Purdue hires Holtz, I am going to be gravely disappointed and would really be hurt on a personal level as an alum and a fan of Purdue Football. I am only 32 years old and I know there are countless others fans (even on here) that are older and have suffered through some lean years with some obvious bad hires...but hiring Skip Holtz would be the final nail in the coffin for some of those fans. If thinking of hiring Holtz gives me a feeling of despair as one of the few left who truly loves Purdue football...I can't imagine what it would do for those fringe fans that have left already and are simply waiting to see the hire.

I couldn't agree more and not to mention the wasted $$ spent on a search firm from Chicago. You'd think MBob could close a deal with Skip Holtz.

Bo Schembechler went from Miami (O) to Michigan. He did OK there.

There's no way in hell they're going to announce Skip Holtz. There will be mutiny in the fan base for sure. I have a good feeling about this. Of course I was excited when we hired Hazell too. Life of a Boiler fan.

Tressel was from Youngstown St before OSU.
I'm not the one making the "MAC to top level P5 doesn't happen" case. Just stumbled upon his quote. When someone comes with an example and it's from 1969, they're really grasping for straws to make their point.
