Is Tennessee a really good team, or are we overrated?

Or was it a little but of, we played a bad game and they played a good game?

Also, how does a player end up with a black eye instantly and there's no review for a flagrant foul? I'm not sure on the rule, but isn't any contact about the neck suppose to be a flagrant? Hell I'd even take a personal foul. I was very shocked they "didn't see" that one.

Unless you want to T up PJ since PJ gave him the mouse under his eye.

Purdue played terrible team basketball.

We'll find out if Tennessee is real or not today based in how they play against Villanova. I don't think they are a bad team.

Regardless it was a winnable game for Purdue and they beat themselves out there. Reminded me of the @ Nebraska and @ Iowa losses for Purdue last year.

i just watched the game. the mighty boilers have the worst hands sometime

i can't believe how many rebounds hit our guys right in the hands and went ob or the other guys just took it out of their hands or slapped it away. act like you want the ball.
i really like haas but he and vince need to grab the ball with authority

for being the best shooter painter ever recruited it still amazes me that cline can't get a shot

You know it can actually be that we are not overrated and Tennessee isn’t a really good team. In a 30+ game season, sometimes teams have poor games and sometimes teams have good games.

This tournament was huge for Purdue going in(as is for other teams) 4 seniors got to think a huge moment and up for it and they wasted a golden opportunity to get much needed respect outside of WL.
Totally agree with Cline and if that's the case, keep him on the bench and get the frosh needed minutes.

This. When the season ends we will have the answer to both questions. No reason to over think it now, let's see how it all pans out.

If Carson and Vince shoot anywhere close to their average, we blow out Tennessee. It was not Tennessees defense. It was just a bad day for those guys. Did Painter put them in a position to win? Sure. Did he make every decision correctly? Hindsight says we should have fouled to stop the 3 pt shot. Wish we had, but you have to play the odds. Odds were that they would not hit that shot.

Totally agree. Every team looks better when the ball goes in the basket and we are no different. We could have put this game away early, but key misses and poor rebounding sealed out fate.

We'll have other poor shooting games! We quit with the ball reversal n giving h n h. Looks down low w that the only time they touched the ball were lets pass to them n run away no outlet when doubled or they were already doubled
We came out soft n they man handled us! We took quick shots with leads. Just didn't play smart! Teams saw what to do against us ...play us physical! We're soft!

I feel like Purdue would win a rematch the majority of the time, because we lost due to several things, and if any one of them had been different we would have won in regulation. Yes, I know - excuses, excuses...
- Poor shot selection many possessions... Taking and missing ok shots early in the clock rather than moving & passing to get better shots. We’re they coached to play that way? I doubt it. As much as Carson helped us, a number of his “just chuck it” decisions hurt us yesterday. And it wasn’t just him either.
- Readily avoidable defensive breakdowns leading to some easy Volunteer buckets.
- Isaac and Vince impacted by negative psychology, especially Isaac - the Vols’ athletes gave him fits.
- The way the game wa officiated. Refs called a lot of fouls on the Vols, but they failed to call a lot of fouls that occurred as well, and that let the Vols play their game. This seems to be part of Barnes’ strategy... play aggressive using hyper athleticism, accept a lot of fouls, but expect officials to not call ALL the fouls because of how lopsided the foul calling would be in THAT case.
- Bad luck on a number of fronts... Missing shots we should make, though the Vols had plenty of those as well. Rebounds bouncing to the Vols (aided by our shot selection), etc.
- Bad coaching day for Painter. I rarely blame him, but he got out coached yesterday. There should have been dictates on shot selection (& if there were, there should have been consequences for not following them). He should have worked the refs better, including getting T’d up on a bad call / no call early enough for it to make a difference. I dunno - he should have been more inspiring at half time - seems like Barnes must have been.
OVERALL, it was a poor performance for team & coach alike... the other factors combined with that sent the game teetering off the edge of the cliff & we lost. Another learning opportunity.

Too early to tell what Purdue's rating should be, or Tennessee's. But Coach Barnes had a good game plan against Purdue and his players played hard. Reminded me of some Keady teams. Purdue was over confident and not ready. We gave one away. I don't think Tennessee is THAT good.

Not sure if you read the very first line of my post, but it felt like you basically agreed with it while disagreeing with me? I'm gonna say you were just agreeing with it.

It appears that we are overrated, severely at this point. We need some help to make the tourney now

this is the problem. What average do you use? Do you use their average against good and decent teams? Do you use their average in tournament games? or do you use their average when they padded their stats against teams we had no business playing?

in our stats classes I was taught, to throw out the outlier stats when trying to find an accurate measurement.

Somebody pointed out a very telling stat about Dakota where he scored 5 points or less in about 6 important games in the past. they said, he basically passed up the opportunity to score and allowed others to do their thing, and we lost the majority of those games.

people keep praising PJ, but why do our opponent's guards keep hitting threes over his tight defense?

Vince never shows up until tourney time. He pulled another one of his early season disappearing acts this week.

Haas is a great offensive weapon, why don't we use him more? because his turnovers are not reflected as missed shots?

I'd be ok with a constant fire of three point shots and misses, if we had the capability of rebounding our misses. other teams are able to rebound their missed threes. But I guess we have the attitude we're not going to miss, so we never put ourselves in position to get the rebound if we do. I don't blame has totally. if our guards are going to fire away, they have to be aggressive and follow up their shots.

We had a lot more talent on the court than our last two opponents. but these are games that not only the NCAA seeding committee , and media watches, these are also games elite recruits also were watching. I would venture Tyger was watching both games and I doubt he liked what he saw. We lost a lot more than 2 losses to our record.
