I give him credit for winning 29 games but losing to a 15 seed should not have happened. There was very little improvement in this team as the seasoned progressed that’s coaching.
1. Every game we had 12 + turnovers we usually lost the game including 17 to St.Pete. Why wasn’t there improvement in TOS ? Was it the two team rotation, not a good point guard or lack of team leadership? I’m sure they drilled on ball handling but it never got much better.
2. Ivey was a great young talent won games for us but played horribly in the St. Pete game. Painter preached to him about letting the game come to you but Ivey continually tried to force plays making numerous TOS 6 against St Pete and playing like a train wreck. Maybe Painter should have him set more on the bench to get his message across to Ivey. More teams learned how to jam the paint on Ivey as the season progressed so there was little improvement in his play. His outside shooting was also inconsistent from game to game. Ivey was still exciting to watch made great plays and won games for us averaging 17 pts. per game.
3. I question whether Painter is a tough enough disciplinarian as a coach? He seems like a nice easy going guy but does he get really fired up like some of these coaches to get better results?
4. Foul shooting. I believe we were around 70% as a team but Edey and Williams struggled off and on all year. Even Ivey was not automatic. St. Pete had 3 players shooting 80% + from the foul line. Other than Edey didn’t see improvement as the season progressed.
5. Defense is one area we did see some improvement but watching the last 4 minutes of St.Pete game their guards would drive in and shoot the short jumper numerous time to score. And we didn’t score for a minute stretch before the last two minutes. Maybe zone would have helped at times but Painter doesn’t like zone. But our defense was not St. Pete’s.
6. Outside shooting. We really did not have consistent outside shooting. In the St. Pete game Sasha hit 3 threes first half but we were 1/12 in 2nd half w Ivey hitting the solo 3. Sasha being in a slump for the last month of season really hurt. Even Gillis struggled the last part of season. I’m not sure why our three point shooting was so inconsistent but screens and rotation could have been some of it.
Overall I’m not happy w Painter’s coaching this year with a team loaded w talent. We lost the B1G conference by 1 game, lost the B1G tournament in final game and lastly losing to a 15 seed in S16. His recruiting has improved in last 5 years maybe why we’ve been in S16 last 4/5 years but only 1 EE in 17 years is not good. He did say in the post game interview that it grinds at him not to make a FF yet. The big question what will he do going forward to get better results?
Frustrating for all of us. “ Wait until next year” “famous words for PU sports.
