Is it just me, or are others just blasé about our Men's basketball program?

I've been following Purdue Men's basketball since the late 1950's, and I've seen so many disappointing seasons with lack of achievement, that it becomes what I seem to expect any more. It ticks me off that we have "almost always" been, at best, the second best team in Indiana.

In my lifetime, I've witnessed Purdue in ONLY TWO NCAA Final Fours. The first we were runners-up, the second we won the (now defunct) consolation game. I was talking with a friend the other day; and he and I, are attuned to the notion that the chance is very slim either of us will ever see our Men in another Final Four. When you think about the hype that has surrounded this program on several different occasions, that is seriously disappointing.

I'm preparing, in a few months, to relocate to Florida and live there for the remainder of this worldly life. I often wonder if I shouldn't just follow a Florida team and let the chips fall where they may; but, I know I'll always want the Boilers to make the Big Game at the Big Dance ... I just wonder if it will ever happen for me to see.

hang in there, today I turned 60 and I'm still hoping, but the blase may be coming from the lack o emotion this team shows. One thing I noticed watching the Sweet 16 was most of the teams showed alot of emotion save Kansas.

I'll try, but I'm 63 and tiring of mediocrity! :(

By the way, Happy Birthday!

At least you have seen them there in your lifetime. There are hundreds of thousands of Purdue grads that have never witnessed it.

I am sort of in the same boat. Have had season tickets since the 80's and club seats the past several years. I am not renewing this year. It was a hard choice. I am transitioning into retirement over the next several years. I have a place in Florida to spend the winters then work in Indy during the nicer weather. I will always be a Boiler fan, but my support in the JPC and as a season ticket holder are gone. A lot of that has to do with the frustration of being a Purdue sports fan. It's not easy. I will still watch every game on TV, but my discretionary income is going elsewhere.

Similar to me. I stopped my funding a couple years ago. As the years to retirement have been nearing, it's been a choice that was imperative; however, I too, am like you ... always a Boiler fan, but no more financial support. What part of Florida? I am relocating to Sarasota (full time). Fortunate that my company wants me to stay employed from there for a few years.

Didn't you know? Purdue didn't officially lose that first game in 1980. It was "vacated" by UCLA.

Triple Yep. I watched Stillabower and Shellhaus in Lambert. I felt that the last few years of Keady were just not exciting... not entertaining ... I hated it. I felt partially the same this year .... not totally as we had some great plays, but overall, no intensity and fist pumps and screams.

We were a great team this year, but little emotion and honestly, little to brag about. I want a team I can swagger into a bar about ... a team I can brag about ....

I have a place near the airport in Ft Myers. On a golf course...the cost of my club seats will pay for my annual dues to play golf. It was not easy to let go. Both of my kids recently graduated from Purdue as well. Purdue education really gave me a huge advantage as it did for my kids. But the athletics has been a source of frustration for a long time. Best for me to use my money in other ways. Best wishes for you transition.

sounds like a nice setup. I could do the transition soon as well. I differ in that the tourney is not my measure of success. It is a piece, but only a piece. I could do Sarasota (sister in Bradenton) and cold do the ocean side as well...

I spend time in Mesa, golf every single day, but I come to Indiana regularly ..... but I can never answer those who ask "why?"

This is the oldies but goodies thread. I'm turning 64 next month. Likely leaving S IL next year to head to the SC coast. As far as sports I'm just about burned out on all of them. Was diehard Reds fan. MLB has killed that. Don't even turn on a game anymore. NBA sucks. Used to be an absolute basketball junky watching 3-8 games a day when time allowed. Won't even turn the tournament on this weekend. Purdue FB is so brutal I won't even DVR it anymore because I just end up erasing when I find out how we stunk up another game. Guess I'm going to spend my time fishing inshore and walking the beach instead of spending money on the BTN when I move.

I'll be a Boiler for the rest of my life & I'm damn proud of it. I know I'm young but you couldn't get me to root for another team. I've already experience plenty of dissapointment. I'm not satisfied with it, but our program is on the rise as of late so I'm just going to enjoy the ride & not worry about things I can't control.

I found this really interesting because I have made the same journey. None of it matters much anymore. I spent a lot of time in Mackey/Mollenkopf a few years ago and I cared about the guys, but that has diminished a lot. I'll grab a red sox game here and there (Ted Williams fan growing up ... then Yaz). There is way too much unhappiness and drama around ... I don't need to seek it out by watching a team I like get handled. Hate NBA ... it's some other game than I know. Don't really care about NFL ... If there is a chance to do something fun, no hesitation.

holy crap this is a depressing thread. All you old guys are setting a bad example.

Even though we lost in the tourney, I still really enjoyed this season, especially the M$U and Maryland games, plus our nice run in non-conference play. I genuinely enjoyed watching this team play. Where is the Boiler pride??

We all might as well trade in our Purdue gear for ND football gear and IU basketball gear. geesh

I spent a lot of time in Cocoa Beach Florida (month of July) for many years. I like the ocean and enjoy the fishing from the surf or boat ...could do the gulf...could do around the Nashville area (Franklin?) as well. Pic is from last year on Chesapeake Bay at daughters wedding...but couldn't do Maryland..couldn't do California either...

GTB, I only remember the '80 FF and as a teen at the time, I remember how great and exciting that was. JBC was incredible that tourney. To many fans on this board are happy with us just being "also rans". Unfortunately, that is probably our downfall.

I am a Boiler forever. My daughter and son-in-law were both cheerleaders, they go to a bar in Phoenix for the tourney and some football. It has more alums in it than Indy does. My wife became an alum when she was 45, and another son is graduating soon. It's not that I don't support them, it's just not like it was when I went to every tourney game in 1969 and couldn't speak in class for the month of March. They weren't in TV then and there wasn't so much drama and negativity for a loss. There still wasn't for many years after. Your perspectives change when you decide you've had enough drama and are only going to allow good in your day to day life ... and have the ability to do that.

Yes, those of us who don't lose their freakin minds and call for the head of the coach after an upset loss love being "also rans". We also settle for cold food in restaurants, bad haircuts, and warm beer.

Just shut up already.

Maybe it's been "our downfall". Most of us got over it. But some have been whining about Purdue basketball ever since.

Actually, I did know her at Purdue - not well, but enough to stop for a brief conversation when passing. Red Gold, on the other hand, was my largest account from '02 through '09. During their high-growth years. Crazy times for me.

I will be 64 in June and I will always be a Purdue fan and the most discouraging thing to me nowadays is the ongoing crooked things that happen in college athletics .The Sandusky scandal at Penn State ,and the crooked things that have happened lately at Syracuse and North Carolina, two of the final four teams ,are really sad.I do like the NFL,but I cant stand the NBA and I don't ever watch NASCAR.Thank God there are things besides sports.

Think you and Cevol need to do a little reading again on the posts here and try for little better comprehension this time. None of us said a thing about becoming fans for life of other teams or abandoning our Boiler roots. It's just not as important to us anymore. 50+ years of mediocrity in FB with a few good years thrown in and the constant struggle to be relevant in BB and the attendant annual heartbreaks along with an Athletic Director that has trashed the money sports to further his love for non-revenue sports and a few really sucky university Presidents have sapped my desire to spend my days like a Cub fan and always waiting for next year. Still proud of my two degrees and the time and friendships I from my days on campus and those memories will never leave me.

I know what you're saying but I just can't see myself not keeping up with scores or ever not being a fan. I know Purdue has had a lot of mediocrity in its history but it has had a lot of great moments too. Those are the ones I remember and come back to when my faith in the athletic dept is wavering lol. I just try to be positive & not take it too serious.

i'm not bashing painter as i really respect him but teams do seen to take on the personality of their coach...

I'd honestly prefer a few T's for overly emotional or overly aggressive. I know that Foster and Cardinal were darn close a few times .... usually right when the team needed them to get close. I love staying virginal pure and nice, but you know what, badboys seem to get the best. And I did see your "vbg."

I'd love to have something to yell "... up yours" about ... just once ...

The whining is getting ridiculous. You would think it is miserable to be a Purdue fan. I enjoyed the hell out of the 3-Pete basketball team, the Rose Bowl Team, the post-Brees bowl teams, the Baby Boilers, and the current basketball team.

I refuse to play the "woe is me card because I'm a Purdue fan". There is no pride in that.

keep the faith. i'm 67 and retired in fl and it is really easy these days to keep up with the mighty boilers maybe even see a couple games a year. football will be back in the game when some changes are made in the athletic dept and the haze lifts

it's hard for me to root for the florida teams (unless they're playing alabama , ND or others of my most hated club). i remain a boiler and B1G fan especially bb. fans of all florida teams will not allow you to become a fan , you will learn to not like the fans

I'm 50 so not quite as old as some in this thread but all this whining by the blue hair crowd is getting old. Sack up and quit your bitching. If you don't want those nice comfy black seats in Mackey there are many others waiting for you to give them up. I'm one of them, maybe if enough of you jump ship I can get moved up with the re-seating of Mackey this summer. Besides some younger fans might have more enthusiasm and show up more than 5 minutes before tip-off!!

Ok, that is off my chest now and we can return to regular programming.

In my day....they didn't have these fancy schmancy seat backs or cushions.....you just sat on a bunch of wooden boards.....and you might just get a rusty nail in your keister......yeah.....just shoutin down the damn referees needin a tetanus shot......so what.....we liked it! And if somebody was blocking your view.....we didn't politely ask them to sit down......you just took that board and whomped em upside the head.....then there sittin lookin like Frankenstein with a rusty nail in their head......and we liked it!
