Interesting article on Schiano

Excuse me for responding to my own post but this article mentions something that I had not previously considered.

There were 26 HC jobs open last year. The number of jobs that open up this year will have a significant impact on the pool of HC candidates that we have choose from.

For example, Purdue is probably the only B1G school to open up this year. If the other P5 conferences have a grand total of only, say, 5-6 vacancies, then there will be considerably less competition for the Flecks and Schianos and Hermans that there would be if there were a couple dozen schools looking for HCs.

This year might be "good timing" for Purdue to be in the market for a HC.

I would be happy to get Schiano. Our current players will probably sh*t their pants. I heard he is a total disciplinarian. No BS at all. Unlike DH that was their "buddy". That's why Schiano was not a good fit for the NFL. The players didn't like his discipline. He made Rutgers relevant. No-one before or after him has been able to do that. Obviously, he knows how to turn a turd into a team.

I actually think what got Hazell in to problems is that he took too much of a CEO/NFL type approach to overseeing the program. He self-admitted that he made a mistake of not meeting with the players personally when he was hired and failed to spend time to get to know them on a personal level. Want to figure out why that first year was a total disaster....there you go.

When I first heard he did not meet with the players personally I knew he was clueless and we were in trouble. In the NFL if a player isn't doing what it takes the player knows they will be shown the door without any notice.

Schiano is my first choice because (1) I think he could turn things around at Purdue and (2) I think he'd stick around. We know he's not looking to the NFL and WL is s good place to raise a family, good schools, low crime, etc.

With Fleck or Rhule or Herman, they're younger and may be more inclined to use Purdue as a stepping stone.

At this point if a coach were to rebuild Purdue enough to be sought after from the big boys, than he'd obviously have them back in contention. Which is fine by me.
