Improving Vertical

Reading my Blue Ribbon. In the IU section, Crean is quoted saying Bryant increased his vertical by 9 inches in 8 weeks, and Bielfeldt increased his by 5. I have long thought that if AJ and Isaac could get above the rim more, it would mean even higher FG %'s for them, including more dunks.

My question to anyone with the right experience: what is realistic in terms of a player improving their vertical?

And how much do you think a few more inches of altitude would help our centers?

I think that Hammons' vertical has improved a lot since he was a freshman. When he came in he really struggled in that area.

From what I've read/heard, Biggie, Davis, Edwards, and PJ have all made great progress on their verticals this offseason.

Supposedly, they all have increased their verticals. They say vince can reach 11 feet now

9 inches in 8 weeks? Either Crean is full of it or Bryant is a freak of nature. I'm guessing it's the former. You can certainly increase a player's vertical with the right training regimen, but a lot of it is natural athleticism. To say any player gained 9 inches inches in 8 weeks is a stretch. A lot of players don't gain 9 inches in a career.

That's encouraging. It sounds like Josh Bonhotal has done terrific work with the team. This link talks about how Hammons has made huge strides in improving his speed: http://www.purduesports.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/josh_bonhotal_756939.html

Bonhotal also has some great video clips on his Twitter feed:

I like the one that is labeled 'Winter is Coming'. Watching Taylor jump out of a chair onto a ledge is impressive. Seeing Stephens hop over a row of chairs, clearing each by a foot it seems, was surprising.

It should be interesting to see how it translates to the court.

I had to laugh at this too. You know when you can't trust what Crean is saying? When his lips are moving.

OK, sure, maybe the kid did it...but with some caveats. The first measurement was done after running 100 suicides and then doing 50 squats with 500 lbs. 9 weeks later the measurement was with fresh legs. What a joke and load of bs. Why does one even say stuff like this?

Other than Haas losing weight, what are some of the measurables he improved in? I was hoping to hear he gained some on his vertical.

Most likely an improvement in technique (or test conditions) rather than an improvement in athleticism.

Wow, a 4 star kid coming out of high school had the same vertical as me ( who can't quite jump over a phone book now)?
There is a photo on Peegs of Bryant blocking Williams shot. His hand is like 2 inches above the rim. And the Hoosiers are saying he is such an improvement over Perea. At least for this year, I'm not worried about IUs inside game. Creans big offense consists of having the center crash the boards on three attempts.

If Bryant knows where he is supposed to stand on the floor, he's an improvement. Perea was pure athlete; no basketball IQ. I think Bryant is a much better player. I don't think he has one and done talent but he's no scrub.

Following up on Stephens, Brian had great things to say on Gold and Black Radio today about the progress that he appears to have made this offseason. Kyle and Brian seemed to agree that Stephens was the player who could take Purdue to the next level this season if he takes his game to the next level personally and I tend to agree.

There is no way he improved his vertical by 9 inches in 8 weeks. It's as close to being physically impossible as flying with your arms.

Secondly, being the meat-head I am, there ain't NO WAY Bryant is doing 50 squats with 500 pounds. He'll be lucky to hit 315 for one rep. That's a long way down and back up with 500 pounds on your back with legs 4 feet long. I understand the comment made was very, very sarcastic, but I just had to clear that one up.

Lol I dunno about flying but Yogi is dunking now. They must be doing something right.
I think Yogi could dunk in high school, but that's okay. You can mark me down as suitability impressed with the player development program when it comes to improving players verticals. I mean for Bryant, a McDAA, to increase his paltry 6 inch vertical, almost doubling it in 6 weeks, I mean, just wow!. Must be the water down there, I suppose. Maybe the dorm food, do yo think? Wait, maybe it is the measuring tool... sure honey, see it's 6 inches long, honest! (TIC)

Well it's definitely not the dorm food. It didn't do a damn thing for my vertical!

I had always heard Yogi could dunk in high school, but judging by his teammates reactions when he did it I don't think they'd ever seen it before. I'll give props to any sub-6 foot guard who can dunk the ball. I'm 5'8" and used to be pretty impressed with myself when I could grab the rim lol.

I've got you by an inch and couldn't come close to the rim. I call it my credit-card-jump. I could jump just high enough to slide a credit card under my feet!

That's what the motion offense is for lol. I bet you could catch and shoot off a screen.

Now he can jump up and grab the top shelf liquor.

(Think of Randy Moss trying to grab the fruity munch.)
