Illinois hires new head coach

Looks like a very solid hire.

I did not know that Stephen F. Austin went 53-1 in the Southland Conf under his leadership and made three straight NCAAs (2 of which they advanced to the Round of 32).

Agreed. Wikipedia already has his profile updated. Says he has a > 80% winning percentage.

This bad news for us. Painter needs to step up as schools around make great coaching hires.

Why would turmoil and a coaching merry-go-round at Illinous be bad news for us? How many kids do we get out of Chicago or St. Louis? How many kids out of Ill? So we are supposed to quake in our shoes about this new hire? Ohhh, I am really scared.... Come on. Get a handle on your fears.

Don't know much about him.

Interesting (and quick) hire. I think he'll do well, but lot of pressure to win at Illinois.

I like the personality of Illinois' AD. Sometimes people like this that are all slick in their public figure are not necessarily the greatest managers, so it will be interesting to see how he does (also made a very intriguing football hire). Check out his Twitter - this is really the type of guy Purdue needs eventually.

I am just saying this A+ hire. Illinois will no longer be an easy out. With Izzo down, Painter has a chance to become the best coach in the Big Ten.

Got you! Yes, I think Painter has a chance to distinguish himself in the next few years. He needs some signature victories to hang his reputation on.

Nojel Eastern is from Illinois.

Wasn't Stephens also from Illinois? And Painter has spent a lot of time recruiting players from several Illinois AAU teams.

To know Josh is to love him. I coached him for a couple of years. His Dad is a Prof at Purdue and tutors some athletes. Josh is that unique combination of a fabulous human being, with the intellect to have a law degree, a background in sports, an alum of Illinois, and young enough to relate to how the world spins for today's college kids. And the support of a wife who is everything I just mentioned that he is.

I think this is a great hire for Illinois. I like the boldness of the Illinois AD but think he might have made a bad choice for football with Lovie. The B1G will always be tough. M$U and O$U are slipping a little bit but MN and NW are rising, with Illinois possibly joining them. Lets hope IU hires Alford so they don't join the group of fast risers. This would be a good time for us to make a final four run.

lowly Illini fan here again . We are thrilled (overall) with this hiring . Looking forward to playing more uptempo.

btw best of luck tonight!

My step-son and his family live in Stillwater. I know Ok State fans are devastated as they really thought he was terrific...
