Illinois end "WAR CHANT" ...........

Michael Savage had a hilarious 10 minutes on his podcast Friday about all the changes that will have to be made to accommodate this nonsense!

Worth a listen!

Agree here. The Chief was such a staple of not only the university but all college sports. I totally understand the chance it offends BUT what about altering the performance (was said to be based on traditional NA dance but it wasn't) and ensuring some NA heritage and scholarships through its young men and women who portrayed the Chief?

Now teams that use offensive names like Redskins should change in my opinion...but things like the chief or the war chant are not used in a way to degrade or demean and could be used as a beacon to inform if given the chance.

Will SEC bands be banned from playing Dixie soon?

ole miss stopped last year,
began making changes/removals in 2009

they also removed their rebel guy mascot in 2003.
even banned carrying in sticks/flags in 1997 (eliminating confederate flags formerly waved), after then ole miss coach tuberville complained to the president/chancellor it affected recruiting efforts: "We can't recruit against the Confederate flag".

There was an Article in WSJ Weekend about this - a jab at it comparing it to ppl who like to act out Dungeons and Dragons and their inner person.. calling it LARP I think ...Live Action Role Playing

Envisioning the AAMB playing the war chant at halftime of the Illinois game while in one finger salute formation..

Well, what's next ...PETA going after Colts, Bears, Jaguar's, Bengals and the rest? What about PETA going after the Packers because it's about animals again. This political correctness bullshit has to end somewhere and soon. As the great-grandson of a fine Native American I find no offense to the Redskins as it's been around for years. I'm honored that a fighting group like the Illini football team would chose to use that name and take no offense to it. As I said, this political correctness namby-pamby bullshit has to end very soon.

Well said....well said..........sad that ten percent of the population and the Liberal Media are setting this BS agenda...........among other issues!

I would say media, not liberal media. the media hypes what sells. if there is no longer interest, the media would move on to the next great thing, just like fidget spinners. First we loved them and they helped out kids with ADD. And they sold like hot cakes. the n somebody hurt themselves being stupid. then we made 20 millions kinds as part of the marketing wave. and now, 4 months later, they've become yesterday's news and stockpiling shelves at Walmart and Staples.

media is not liberal, it's about profit. they look who their viewers are, and sell stories to them. What appears to be a liberal media is just a company selling to the majority of the country. And the reality is, population wise, the majority of our country that buys things is liberal. if the majority of our country that buys stuff was conservative, you would quickly see all those media companies do a 180 and become conservative media.

Some of us see the lies and hypocrisy on both sides. My main issue, is we don't want to offend 5-10% of the people, so by doing so, we offend the other 90% so they won't be offended. Why not ask the rest of us 90% how we feel?

You say, "Why not ask the rest of us 90% how we feel?" JFK said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." And yes, the majority of the media, though profits are their root cause for being NOW, the vast majority is/are extremely liberal and biased. Until we, the 90% choose to do something to right the wrongs being perpetuated by the 10%, then our freedoms will continue to evaporate. Remember....your ox might be the next to be gored.

I've watched the media for a couple of years going back to the 50's. Every media outlet you consider liberal now has at one time been very conservative. The mainstream media you are blasting now as liberal was very favorable for President Raegan. What I see now is not a liberal media, but more of an anti-Trump media. As far as politically correct goes, the media didn't start it, your politicians did. the media just helped publicize it.

Do you consider facebook liberal? it has become today's news media source as more people go to facebook for links to the news than watch any other media network. Facebook has become our political medium and forum. and if there is a link on facebook, it must be true.

Just a bet that if and when the FB and BB start winning with or without the band the fans will start chopping their War Chant again! It may be just me but I am very glad FSU continues what they do and told the NCAA to stick it and that the courts upheld that the Redskins holds their rights and trademarks

Really surprised that you don't see the media as being liberal. I see it being more liberal now than ever. It's amazing that two people see the same thing and come to complete opposite conclusions.

I just don't believe the media is anything more than a reflection of the masses. They cater to the majority whoever it is. Much like the Indy Star and their sports coverage. They cater to whoever is the winning team. if Purdue was winning and IU losing, they would provide Purdue more coverage.

I'm not a big fan of the media. They use their power and money to dictate their own agenda. Sometimes it's liberal. sometimes its conservative, but mostly, it's for their own profit. Why did Purdue and the Cubs install lights at their stadiums? Why do we have Thursday night football games? It's not because of the fans. nobody ever asks the fans for their input. it's because of the $$$$. Who has the biggest influence over the media? not conservatives or liberals. Their biggest influence comes from advertisers. Some of those advertisers are corporate, and some are political. ESPN is a puppet to what Disney wants it to be.

What's the real reason behind Illinois' move? Did they just suddenly become a liberal oriented university? Or was their decision based on outside pressure involving $$$$ ?

Students at my high school started doing the War Chant for the 3rd down when our team is on defense. I play music for the football games and downloaded the Atlanta Braves War Chant they boost through the speakers...you could totally make an argument that being William Henry Harrison High School it might be construed as something different...or its just kids doing something they see from TV and emulating at another sporting event with absolutely no harm in the intent.

I thought I read somewhere that they actually took a pole of NAs regarding the Redskin name and other sports teams using Indian names and that a majority saw the name as a badge of honor.

I think you are referencing this: https://www.washingtonpost.com/loca...38753295f9a_story.html?utm_term=.398f2e5d0d53

It is something I haven't heard and honestly changes my overall opinion. Thanks for referencing it so I could read it.

Reading in to the article a bit more and some more opinion pieces, I guess it sort of reminds me of when a unit in the military gets what would be a 'derogatory' nickname from the opposing forces and then uses it as a badge of honor.

people complained using the chief as mascot dating back to at least the 80s. much like ole miss was trying to change confederacy usage 20 some years ago. these things have been occuring for some time, not just a new thing.

stanford, st johns, marquette, Dartmouth have all changed their nicknames in recent decades.

iirc 2007ish was when the ncaa began their 'official' name push back.

several indiana high schools have since changed as well.

patiently waiting for this one.
ironically they have gone after high schools for using a similar knock off, rather than getting rid of it

This goes along with what a poster mentioned about himself being Native American and finding a sense of pride in the term 'Redskin.' I think most Irish enjoy that term given to them which was probably first attempted to be negative...especially given the fact an Irish fighter essentially is the top of combat sports right now.

The main issue was that the University of Illinois could not find a local tribe or a relocated tribe from the Illinois area to endorse the use of Chief Illiniwek. What's interesting though is that out of all NA mascots, Illiniwek appears to have been created with the strongest attempt at reflecting positive depiction of NA culture. FSU on the other hand, despite currently having the endorsement of Seminole Tribe of Florida, had previously called their mascot Sammy Seminole, Chief Full-a-bull, and Chief Wompumstompum.

No, I think the main issue is that the powers at be (not to mention the student body) at Illinois is just a tad more liberal than at Florida State.

Not really. It's because athletic branding matters more at FSU. Championships tend do that. When you toil in mediocrity as much as U of I has recently in the revenue generating athletics, it's easier to impose change and a lot less people care.

They're setting it because the other 90% sit on their behind and do nothing. If that 90% were to mobilize, PC would end instantly.
years ago when I used to participate in a national educational forum a writer (native indian bloodline) for a national magazine stated 20 years ago that Cultural Marxism would be the downfall of this country. Prior to that I had not really understood what it meant. No question the 90% are compliant, detached people from many things of substance.

Lowly Illini fan here and yeah the PC Culture has been out of control . that "war chant" was pretty badass and got me & my fellow Illini fans pumped. Not to mention it was totally harmless too! I'm now awaiting/dreading the day that we will no longer be allowed to be called the Fighting Illini smh

Wait until they rename the state! And "Indiana" is about as non-PC as they come right?

Never say never in today's world, but I think we're safe on the name. Most trace "Fighting Illini" to mean Illinoisans (that's what Illini means, in addition to being the name of an Indian federation) who fought in World War I in connection with Memorial Stadium, so hopefully we can rebrand and do something cool (and equally as respectful as the Chief) with a WWI soldier at some point? I don't know. We easily have the least "identify" of any B1G school. :(
