...and had the power to choose the next athletic director, who would be on your list of candidates?

I don't have a list yet, but Ian McCaw of Baylor would be my first choice right now: http://www.baylorbears.com/genrel/mccaw_ian00.html

I don't know if the committee can sell Purdue to someone with a similar current status like the Ian McCaw's of collegiate athletics, but they can certainly try.

P.S. If you do respond, I'd appreciate it if you are willing to name actual names or discuss the search committee or B.O.T. and the positives they can bring to this search. Being cynical and negative is missing the point of this thread being started.

Was talking to a co-worker today and he said that NIU fans were afraid Purdue would go after their AD. He went there two years ago from Wisconsin and NIU people think he might want to land in the Big Ten. My first question was "Did he hire your football coaches?" He has not. He said that last AD that hired NIU's football coaches is now at East Carolina so I told him that if I were in charge that would be the guy I'd look at first. Basically the most important job of the AD is to hire coaches and if you want to get specific the football coach. If he can do that successfully, you can get other people to help with other areas if needed.

I'd choose me!!!!

1) football coach gone in 60 seconds. Blow the budget on high ranKing coach.
2) get mySelf a sweet office
3) use the Purdue planes like Harbough
4) schedule some games in Hawaii
5) require recruiting in football from Indiana
6) retire on stage as we receive the national champ trophy from the Dr. Pepper guy.

Does wash u have much of an athletic department? I've never heard of their sports teams.

I don't know who I'd pick. Not necessary someone with previous AD experience, but they need to have run a business. Definitely someone outside the current department.

I'm glad cardinal's name isn't mentioned. Love him as a player and a guy, but he has nowhere near the experience that we need.

From that list provided, I'd go with Christopher from X.

They're D3. But if Purdue doesn't drag their feet with an AD hire, he'd have a year or so to get up to speed at Purdue.

Theo Epstein. He did it with the red sox, will do it with the cubs, think what he could do for us.

Why is Del Conte an unrealistic option? As far as the two typically major revenue sports, men's basketball hasn't been doing TCU any favors for most of the last 16-17 years. That program has basically been irrelevant ever since Billy Tubbs left.

No connection to Purdue or the Midwest area. He's been a TX guy (Rice and now TCU) for the past 10+ years. Knowing how Purdue handles everything, they'll go for a "Purdue guy" with some type of ties to the area. Doubtful he's even on the radar.

And while he's not had success in basketball yet, he's only in his 7th year at TCU and he's at least trying to improve a terrible basketball team. He got rid of Jim Christian (a 1st year HC he'd inherited when he became AD), and brought in Trent Johnson from LSU. During Johnson's first 3 seasons, they've beaten Kansas, OU, OK St., Kansas State, and Texas Tech. Which is pretty good considering they were an 11 win team 3 seasons ago. And even though they've been a bottom of the barrel team, he still has put $72 million into renovating their basketball stadium to try improve the team. And that's after putting $164 million into the new TCU football stadium. He's heck of a fundraiser also.

From his bio: "Since Del Conte's arrival on campus, TCU twice established a single-season school record with six conference championships. During that stretch, nine sports have won league titles (baseball, women's basketball, football, women's golf, men's swimming and diving, men's tennis, women's tennis, women's indoor and outdoor track and field). Sixteen sports have been represented in NCAA postseason play with 12 teams nationally ranked.

So while men's basketball hasn't had success, he's trying to at least get them up to participate with the other teams he oversees.

I've lived in the DFW area for the last 10 years, when I first arrived here, TCU was hardly ever spoken about (despite having some pretty solid football teams). Now they're a pretty big deal here. He's improved their "brand". All while doing it as a Private School in the Big 12 which all others, except Baylor, being public schools. It's similar to Northwestern in the Big 10.

There's no reason that should happen if there are better candidates or fits available (that lack previous Purdue ties).

Whitman has taken the job at Illinois. Good luck with that dumpster fire.
Josh is very intelligent and knows Illinois well. He's going in with open eyes. With that said, wow, loyalty is great, but stress is bad. Josh is a friend, I hope this is a good move.

You're absolutely right it shouldn't happen. But when does Purdue ever seem to go to great lengths to leave no stone unturned? The Hope hire (a Purdue guy) seemed of one of convenience, Hazell was the hot guy in the MAC at the time (after they failed to get Butch Jones), Painter/Versyp are Purdue people. Hazell (and at the time Butch Jones) was coaching in Ohio. Morgan wanted Paul Chryst while he was at Wisconsin. There's a theme, it's either a Purdue guy or Midwest guy that's in the vicinity

I do agree with your post as there is nothing better than the best one you can get, but I do think that a midwest tie (when hiring a coach) helps with recruiting, especially the early years. This can be handled through an assistant coach that has those ties, Kendrick proved that.

That's exactly right. But kids have to want to buy in too. Hazell/Hope couldn't get much from their Midwest ties. We all thought Hazell would get us great players from Ohio since he was viewed highly there. And he hasn't gotten us much from there.

To me, it's kind of like Einstein's definition of insanity when it comes to hirings at Purdue. We need to be as much innovators in sports as we are in the classrooms. But I think Purdue always takes a cop-out and hires the easy convenient one, instead of going for a trailblazer. Burke got lucky with Tiller and Painter, but a broken clock is right two times a day too.

Yep. I didn't know Hazell was well respected there. That surprises me.

Just hired Jamie Dixon away from Pitt to coach at TCU.

How about the AD at Oregon. I don't even know who it is, but it seems no matter the sport, the Oregon name is always at or near the top.

Who is someone Morgan Burke is really comfortable with, has no history of success, and is really cheap? That's who we'll hire.
