Season is done, I’m over it, realistically I was hoping sweet 16 but it didn’t happen. Look, we’re all disappointed, however, I think next year can be a really good one, hoping Edey sticks around, will he? What do folks want to see happen? Painter isn’t being fired so that talk isn’t realistic. Personally I want to see Renn from this point forward to be the 4, I also want to see an athletic wing brought in via the portal, a final 4 team can’t have a lineup with Gillis, Newman, Loyer, Smith in it, nowhere near athletic enough. I like Smith and Loyer in it, think Gillis is better served off the bench, same with Newman if he wants to stick it out. I love this school, this loss hurts but it’s nowhere near as bad as the Virginia one. Also, this is a great site, would love to see good ideas without people getting nasty about it, it’s just sports, not life or death lol

Jamison Battle should be a guy that Painter pursues. Long/athletic 3, plug and play opening night starter.

Painter always said we need to get old and stay old.
This was a rebuilding year with modest expectations until we beat Gonzaga and Duke.
Expectations soared when we pull off the improbable and won the Big and BTT.
Painter has only 2 Seniors on the team, one walk on that got the rare open scholarship and the other is a back up 3 pt specialist that struggled.
All the hype as the smallest D1 team vs one of the largest.
I didn’t see a comparison of age and experience.

Great post. Facts tend to get lost in the heat of emotion. It's how the world ended up with Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian.

Curious to see what our lineup is once the dust settles.

Colvin will be a positive addition but we need to go get a senior/grad at the PG/CG to help with Braden. Proven scoring ability and shows they can create their own shot.

I've seen a few comments regarding Colvin. I know he's a great athlete but what might be the expectations for him as a frosh? Just tell me how are his handles?

Well said,

Hope Edy does come back with a little face up game, we won’t be better without him. Berg 10-15 min. 4 needs to be better, Renn, Furst, Gillis? Whoever can increase their facing the basket skills and high low with Zach. 3 Colvin/Heide, 2 loyer/Newman/portal . 1 Smith/portal

Let’s see how it unfolds, Painter will adjust.

I respectfully disagree. That loss hurt but in a good way. Knowing they left it all out there and they were a few seconds and a fluke play from going to the final four was more comforting. Purdue made us proud on the big stage and it brought a lot of good attention to Purdue basketball. The loss Friday is an absolute nightmare. It is a humiliating loss. Historically bad failure at every level. It has made us a national laughingstock and fueled all the naysayers in media who said Purdue would lose early (even they didn’t think this team was capable of losing to FDU) and that Purdue was all hype and not substance. That’s a loss that damages the reputation of Purdue basketball, and could potentially hurt recruiting or at least be used by other coaches against us in their recruitment. It’s that bad.

I disagree, Purdue lost on Friday because they missed wide open outside shots, they need to make them or it will happen every season in March.
Clearly, it's not as simple as "hit shots." There's a REASON WHY they're missing open shots. It's psychological, and also a product of a predictable system that has minimal flow to it. It's a product of the head coach. You must understand (or at least try) to understand how human psychology works.

All the discussions about zone, back to basket center all have some merit, however, if PU actually took/made some open shots, game over.

So the main item is why the didn’t take/hit these, could be….
-players not good enough
-players hit wall/slump
-mental prep/coach mindset hindered

Hunch is all three, remedy, off season conditioning(mental and physical), add 1-2 experienced pure shooters, Painter a little looser and aggressive mindset at tourney time

no, Edey will not be coming back. You don't say things like this if there's a good chance of coming back: He said this after Friday's game when asked about the future: "If there was no money involved,I would come back to Purdue in a heartbeat. It'd be a no-brainer." The fact of the matter is, there IS money involved---- a significant amount of it.
He may not end up playing initially in the NBA, but he'll find a team somewhere (Europe?) that will pay him the cash that he and his family have been waiting for.

Would love to see some of the players take ball to the hoop, instead of Edey camping down low, clogging up lane , while everyone stands at the 3 point line. Edey could set a high pick , instead of camping down in lane. And stopping the drive to basket on defense would be a good thing, it’s gonna happen but way to much this year and in the past

I was struck by the sheer positive emotionality of the Arkansas coach after they beat Kansas. I have to believe that the head coach's emotionality gets passed on to the players at some point and affects how they play. I see very little emottionality (either positive or negative) coming from Painter. Heck,, I recall Keady taling off his sport coat in anger and flinging it to the floor on the sideline. Sometimes, he took a tecnhcal when he did it-- but the players often responded afterwards with more aggressive play that turned the game around in Purdue's favor. I think it might be possible thst Painter's stoic manner filters down to the players and affects how they play. i've heard some fans describe both Painter and our players as neary robotic as the go through their motions. Don't get me wrong. I'm not one of the anti-painter folks who are calling for him to be fired or to go someplace else. But I certainly would appreciate seeing some more intense emotion in his coaching style. Who knows? Maybe he gives the team those intense emotions in practices and we just don't see it during the games. Only the players know that. But the level of Painter's emotional intensity is sure a contrast to other head coaches and to what we used to see from Keady.
However, in the end, I guess this is a personality issue and I don't think its very easy to change one's basic personality when it comes to emotional displays. But i suspect that Painter must experience emotions like joy and anger. I think it would be good for the team if we saw more of those emotions on public display when he felt them.

Energy is a real thing. Maybe THE most real thing. The players feed off of their coach's energy. Painter's energy is tight, stagnant, unsure, and hesitant when it matters most. That naturally influences the players.

I think there is a really good chance he returns.
I think Purdue will come up with the cash.
Also I think his parents want him to get his degree.

same here
I don’t mind Morton, however, he’s a 7th/8th man on a good team, next season 10-15 minute a game guy at a maximum. Guessing as of now, Loyer and Smith are probably guarenteed first game starters, maybe Gillis as well, rest of roster is TBD.

40/60 Edey returns, it’s not a slam dunk that he goes, we all knew Ivey was gone, all knew Edwards was gone, Edey I don’t feel that positive about. Purdue really needs Furst and Renn to step up, I think they both can be really good college players.

The problem is Painter loves guys like Morton. A guy who does what he's told and understands the game. The problem is he doesn't have much of a game. Painter tends to favor guys like Morton so he's likely to play.

I'd venture to say that no team in the sweet sixteen will have a starting guard who averaged less than 4 points per game. I'm not sure Purdue fans understand how unusual that is.

Morton isn’t a B10 caliber athlete or player. He needs to go down a few levels.

I keep reading these posts about changes Painter needs to make, whether it be in his coaching, recruiting, emotions, etc.
Guess what? None of them will happen. If they haven’t happened in 18 years, they won’t now.
The only hope would be if Painter got 3 immediate starters from the portal, but that won’t happen either.

The 3 is the big problem. We basically don't have one and tried to get by with 3 guards (that can't shoot or drive) will once again be counting on a freshman to fill a void. We need a 6-6 slashing big man. Standing around lobbing to the post doesn't work.

Morton leaving us the key to the offseason. If he stays Painter will play him. He just can't help himself.

Sad but true.

Although to be fair, it shocked me a bit when CMP benched him in favor of Newman.

CMP loves him some Morton as it is like looking in the mirror at himself as a player. Again sad.

I can't believe coaches haven't tightened Newman's handle by now. He could be the slasher you mention with coaching......maybe that is the problem though. Instead of coaching him up....Newman has been coached down where he is scared of getting yanked and over thinking things.

His ballhandling was one of the reasons they hesitated to offer him in HS initially. It’s never going to be a strength of his.
