Hunter

For what it's worth, it looked to me like, in his limited minutes, Newman was the best at containing/guarding Curbelo of anyone that got that assignment on Monday.

Why is there this theory or assumption or whatever you want to call it, that Painter doesn't want a high volume ball handling, shooter/scorer? That's exactly what Carsen Edwards was. The guy pretty much had the green light to do whatever he wanted, when he wanted, without repercussions of getting yanked. Granted, the offensive options were much more limited on that team and you had to rely on CE to score, but this perception that a guy who dominates the scoring and volume of shots wouldn't fit into Painter's system is inaccurate.
Not sure what your reply has to do with my post?? I didn't make any assumption about Painter, Ball handling guards or what ever.

I just wanted to note that the grass is not always greener on the other side. Plummer would ride the bench at Purdue and is clearly not better than our first 4 guards.

Hunter and IT are going to split minutes and so are Trevion and Edey. I am predicting Gillis, Ivey and Sasha are going to start playing well over 30 minutes in contested games with Morton, Furst and Newman splitting about 15 - 20 minutes per game.
15-20 minutes going 10 deep is pretty remarkable

Wrong. Plummer is 6'1" is averaging 16.4 points per game while shooting over 40% from three for his career. He's made 48 out of 49 free throws this year. The dude scored 24 points against us and you say we have 4 guards that are better? He'd either start or be first guard off the bench for Purdue.

I think that a lineup of Hunter, Morton, Newman, Furst, and Williams would hold its own with any second 5 in the country.

These threads never cease to amaze.

We have an incredible team, currently #4 in the nation, and previously #1.

Yet, there's this unending mission to sh*t on one player in particular. Unending. Obsessively unending.

There's nothing remotely redeeming about that.
I’m with you on this. I’ve tried to derail this nonsense and have been completely unsuccessful. I take a shot at a-hole and get ambushed by another. I’m pretty much done with this thread.

Cheers!

This depth stuff is getting ridiculous. Illinois clearly had 4 guards better than anyone not named Ivey or Sasha.
This goes back to the point of having a platoon of above average guys who can give elite minutes in spurts. Piece it together for 40 minutes

I think we all think Purdue is a top 5 team. The point is we are a top 5 team because of Edey, Ivey, Williams, Gillis and Sasha. You could pair that 5 with any Big Ten teams 6-8 and Purdue would still be a top 5 team, Who else has 3 of the 25 Wooden Award finalist on their team?

No.

We're a top 5 team because of the entire team.

Period.

Full stop.

Everyone makes this team great, from the starters to the next 5 to the walk on players to the coaches to the managers to the .... (on, and on, and on)

"...Edey, Ivey, Williams, Gillis and Sasha" would ALL tell you, we wouldn't be the team we are without everyone.

You are spot on with respect to how efficient and good that guy is offensively, but, he is not good at the other end...that alone might keep him from getting off the bench as much as we both might think if he were at Purdue.

That said...instant offense if he did come off the bench...I was admittedly very impressed with the quick release, and, the fact that he does not need much space either to get his shot off.

He was a great get for sure out of the Portal...great find/great fit for the Illini.
