CMP (2nd game in a row) for drawing up that play to Biggie near the end! That's where a good coach can make huge difference in a tight game.
And...F that double foul call.
And...F that double foul call.
I told my son that he was getting ready to take some help away and try to get biggie the ball, but I said Crean knows that and will switch Thomas on Vince so one stop foul or whatever leaves Thomas in the game and that Thomas will guard Vince and that I hoped it was set for whoever Thomas was guarding...and maybe it was set that way but Crean just left Thomas on biggie. Absolutely horrible calls on continuation and the usual fouls on driving...but WTF...hows does anyone not call Blackmon on over the back on Dakota? What was the gambling line?CMP (2nd game in a row) for drawing up that play to Biggie near the end! That's where a good coach can make huge difference in a tight game.

He's gotten a lot better at drawing up plays out of the time out. Yes, that was the dagger tonight.CMP (2nd game in a row) for drawing up that play to Biggie near the end! That's where a good coach can make huge difference in a tight game.

yeah that was the last I heard. Maybe they still thought they could get there by calling the double foul and foul on Dakota at the end.Purdue -1.5 last time I looked
Painter's done a great job all year, minor exceptions aside. Remember our biggest achilles heel from last year: full court press. This year? Not even a care.
...and it has nothing to do with knowledge in how to beat the press...it is about being older AND Carsen!Painter's done a great job all year, minor exceptions aside. Remember our biggest achilles heel from last year: full court press. This year? Not even a care.

It's you call...what is the scheme difference? It was primarily 1-2-2 zone and 2-2-1 zone press or traps that caused the problems. Painter knows how to attack those. He knew how to attacke those before he came to Purdue, but the mindset and personnel are different. I'm a Painter fan and there is nothing new under the sun in playing against a zone...it is just that physical limitations prevent all the options. Purdue had no issue with a press when Ronnie Johnson was here. Did Matt and all the coaches forget only to remember when Carsen came in?Actually, we run a completely different scheme against the press than we did last year. Give credit where credit is due.
I replayed this three times. All six of my dogs and I agreed .... what the hell was that ... either a no-call (my choice) or on Blackmon ... but no way on us. And you know,. dogs are totally impartial.I told my son that he was getting ready to take some help away and try to get biggie the ball, but I said Crean knows that and will switch Thomas on Vince so one stop foul or whatever leaves Thomas in the game and that Thomas will guard Vince and that I hoped it was set for whoever Thomas was guarding...and maybe it was set that way but Crean just left Thomas on biggie. My dogs fight over the four PU cheerleader unis .... and have learned to read my emotions to know when to growl and when to howl .... popcorn for everyone ...I replayed this three times. That was a great play drawn up by the coaching staff. Set it up perfectly and couldn't have asked for a better result.
Reminded me of the play Painter drew up two years ago with Davis taking the handoff from AJ at the top of the key and then getting to the hole for the dagger bucket.
I doubt the AD had a darn thing to do with it.Good thread and the kudos are well deserved!
I don't know if it's the new AD or what, but CMP has really seemed to turn things around and is doing all the right things.
Is he perfect? Nope, no coach is. But he is doing really well right now as a coach.
Doubt? Not a factor unless he has a working rabbit's footI doubt the AD had a darn thing to do with it.
He does in terms of money to do things like get rental cars and such. Which is more what I meant with my comment.I doubt the AD had a darn thing to do with it.
THAT makes sense. I'm sure others didn't think along those lines, but rather that somehow the AD emphasized winning moreHe does in terms of money to do things like get rental cars and such. Which is more what I meant with my comment.
Good points. I thought you meant he had magic words that he shared with Painter. He does in terms of money to do things like get rental cars and such. Which is more what I meant with my comment.
I did hear an unconfirmed rumor that he did share his magic wand ... Oh crap, that could be translated in an entirely different way than I meant it ... It is SUPPOSED TO BE AMUSING .... and nothing more.Good points. I thought you meant he had magic words that he shared with Painter.
That's my fault. I primarily post on my phone so long responses with more detail tend to tire out my thumbsTHAT makes sense. I'm sure others didn't think along those lines, but rather that somehow the AD emphasized winning more
Matt recruited (poorly) himself into the mess we had five years ago. He has said so himself. He changed his recruiting goals to emphasize character and fit (significant size came with it). That started the turn around. He then went hard after shooters. That has paid off as well as the difference from last years team to this years clearly demonstrates. Most recently he has added athleticism in Carsen and appears to also be a big part of next years class.Major kudos to CMP for the stretch of games that we have won. Make no mistake this was as difficult set of games that we have had in a long time and CMP did some brilliant coaching.
Coaches are remembered for the body of work they do and not just one aspect and CMP is a way above average coach. It's seasons like these that calling for him to be fired, even with not reaching a FF yet, is ridiculous. He is here for the foreseeable future and deserves to be and I couldn't be happier. He has shown that not only can he develop players of all skillsets, he is not so set in his ways that he can't improve himself. That is a recipe for success.
Exactly my thoughts posted in another thread. Mathias was standing still with the ball coming to him, and Blackmon jumped on him from 6 feet behind. Only a blind or crooked ref would call that on Mathias.WTF...hows does anyone not call Blackmon on over the back on Dakota? What was the gambling line?
Anyone saying there's no way improvement could be because of a better AD must have always worked for the same boss. Knowing he's got the full support of the athletic department now could very easily make him more relaxed and help his coaching. I think it will definitely pay rewards in recruiting in the next few years.
I give CMP props for scheduling that WVU super-secret preseason scrimmage. I'm sure he'd talked about and practiced press-break tactics before that game, but I'm betting that beatdown got the team's attention to where it finally sunk in during subsequent practices. They've been nearly flawless in late game press situations this season.Painter's done a great job all year, minor exceptions aside.
