how the illini feel about this weekend

Listening to the illini fans and their sports talk radio:

Purdue is over rated. Our schedule is weak. Continue to mention NF & GW losses. AJH & IH are too slow and immobile to hang with eggroll. RayDay is "ok player". Everyone else is soft. They are treating it like a playoff for either team ... win & in/lose & go home.

Coach Gross (who is a good motivator) in post game Wednesday night has his team set on an "us against the world" mindset. Mackey is a wild crazy den of a gym.

Paint crew: if you see this, prove coach gross right. Make it the loudest you have ever been. Make them stick their tails between their legs unless they piss themselves first. Back in the 80's & 90's, there were times you couldn't hear the person next to you because it was so loud in Mackey. I challenge you to out do us old timers. Make the roof blow off that joint on senior day and help the team send the illini home to wonder who they get in the nit.

I hate living in central Illinois and seeing orange & blue everywhere.

This game reminds me of the final game on the old floor in Mackey. That was a great game!

Hopefully the result is the same as well.

Well they beat us once without their best guy.....Purdue needs to prove they can handle them....and not allow the big scoring second halves with weak sauce D. I expect to see some press in this game too. Purdue has looked very suspect and un-tourney like in the second half of the last three games.

Purdue is not in the tourney now; certainly would help to get to 20 wins with this game.

Actually every predictor from Lunardi to Palm have Purdue in the tourney right now as last four byes.

Lose and we may drop out.

I don't care to make predictions usually, too superstitious about it I suppose, but I do think PU will be ready to whip some ass in this game...........there, I said it

IU fans felt the same way before playing us. Too slow, too soft, IU was going to win by 20, yada yada yada. Purdue as a team and the fans need to be up for this game and be relentless for 40 minutes. Let Mackey Rock N Roll!!!

Who are we to argue with Clubber?

I think the "not in tourney" comment refers to you're only safe if you can lose the rest of your games and you're still in it.

Purdue actually HAS to win against Illinois if they want to feel safe.

I don't know what media outlets you are referencing or what posters. The
board I subscribe to (not free) is not as optimistic about our chances
as you seem to indicate. Some believe Purdue is overrated and will
beaten by Illinois, others believe Purdue offers challenges and will be
very hard to beat. I'd say more think Purdue will win than Illinois but I didn't count the posts.

Purdue is playing at home, its senior night,
they need the game for the NCAA tournament and its a revenge game (we
beat you in Champaign). Certainly seems like there is plenty of
motivation and Painter will have his guys ready. I don't think Illinois has won at Mackey since the Bush administration. I suspect it will be
one of those games where you won't know until the very end who will win,
and I give the edge to the home team for the reasons stated. Having
said that, I've watched a lot of Big Ten games and have not been great
at picking winners the last two weeks. I will say that I suspect the game will be about as physical as the Illinois / Michigan State game Izzo said was the most physical Big Ten game he had participated in in the last 15 years.

I would love to see Purdue and Illinois both get in the NCAA tournament, but the winner of this game may eliminate the other. Good luck in your other games.

And you can always move to Indiana, you can see black / gold, gold / blue and red stripes there. Much more colorful.

There are always fans in every fan base that talk like that about opponents. Most UI fans I know think it will be very difficult to beat Purdue on the road.

I've lived in IL for 15 years. It is my experience that U of I fans generally have a feeling of smug superiority regarding their BB team that is not historically warranted. A little like IU Lite.

You might be on to something, just look at the name of their arena and their initials ... to quote cereal killer (name that movie): PLOT THICKENS!

1. Media outlet is Jay & Tay show on espn radio, 93.5. Another is the Aric Lee show on espn Decatur, 1050am.
2. 20 Illini homers that I work with that can only spout our bad loses as opposed to making a case for what the Illini have done.
3. So I should move back to Indiana, is that the same as saying that if I don't share the same political view as you that I should move to Canada?

For #3 - if you're a liberal who likes socialism, please do move to Canada! (kidding, kind of).

I really like Groce. Danville, Indiana, guy who played for Patterson at Taylor U. Taught well in HS and in college. Once he settles down and quits pacing and acting like a CloneaCrean, he's going to be very good at Illinois. But he's not good enough this year to come to Mackey and win.

Let me respond to your points one at a time.

1. Thanks for providing examples. I don't listen to either show. I was only pointing out that many people on the sources I read, which are a Rivals board and a free Illinois board aren't counting on a win at Purdue. I'm sure if I was in the right place in Indiana I would hear the same thing about Illinois that you are hearing about Purdue. There is always a segment of a fan base that are not very objective and most fans of any fanbase have their share of homers. I doubt Purdue is an exception. Just go and read any board (I do frequently). There is a mix of people on any board from total homers to fairly objective.

2. Like I heard Painter say in an ESPN interview a few days ago, if you are at all on the bubble you have some problems with your resume. If you go by what most national guys say Illinois and Purdue are both on the bubble and they both have issues with their resume. It's a lot easier for some people to be critical about the other guy than themselves. Sorry for your situation, but its not unique.

3. I was joking. But were you expecting people in Illinois to be wearing Black and Gold when you moved there? Is there a lot of Orange and Blue in Lafayette? Black and Gold in Bloomington, IN? I would say most people in central Illinois where I live are Illinois fans. And no, I'm not asking you to change your religion, political views, or team preferences. One of my best friends is an Indiana fan. We can all live together in peace.

Purdue / Illinois games are usually very competitive - even when one team is clearly better than the other. I look for a competitive game tomorrow decided in the last 4 minutes. If Purdue plays like we had been to get to 11-4, I think we win. If we play like we did against OSU and MSU in the 2nd halves, we probably won't.

If he's living anywhere north of I80 Canada would be too conservative for him if that's your standard.

The way that Purdue has played in the last two games would make an opposing fanbase happy. We've had leads that we've blown and couldn't execute down the stretch.

Our go to players (AJH, Octeus, Vince, RD) have been off, and the momentum that we had gained during out winning streak.

Hopefully some home cooking will change things, but I recall that the BTT and the NCAA's aren't played at home.

If you think folks over in the Land of Lincoln are cocky about this one, I'll have to very much disagree...

No I think most posters realize that there is going to always be a few on everybodies site that are cocky. This is going to be a very tough game both needing the win.

Agreed. The refs will hammer Egwu early and often requiring Maverick Morgan to play extended minutes; he'll get beasted on by AJ Hammons. Illinois' bench will be stretched so thin by games end b/c of foul trouble I see Haas and Hammons having monster games.
