We have 2 players busted for weed?

How stupid are these guys? I realize kids will be kids and they do stupid things, and I did some stupid things in college, but man, if you're gonna be dumb, take the appropriate precautions so you don't get caught.
Better yet, have some discipline and don't put yourself in position to embarrass youself, team, family and coach.
I guess this is why coaches don't have 'zero tolerance' policies for weed. They'd run out of players.

I get it. Everyone wants to have fun while they're young. I just wish these guys would understand the position they're in. So many kids would kill to have the opportunity that Ryan and Basil have. I don't think I would have completely understood at age 19, though.

kids have no idea what the consequences will be for doing stuff until it hits them in the face, until you get your ass burned for doing something you keep on doing it, same as when we were kids, Kids need to decide which is more important, playing ball or doing stuff that will screw it up if caught

I have a feeling it happens quite a bit more frequently than we will ever hear about and at many if not all schools.

Personally I think it should be legalized but since it isn't it's still a crime and not a wise thing to do if you're an athlete.

Smoking some weed while you're in college = No big deal, it goes on at every school. I wish athletes wouldn't do it, but that is probably unrealistic.

Being passed out in a running car with foot on accelerator = VERY big deal.

There is a huge difference between these two actions. Hopefully the latter is not very common for all of our safety.

I think we know why it happens. Young people tend to think that they are invincible and often need to learn lessons the hard way. Both incidents happened when the athletes were in their home towns, away from any structure that has been put in place at school.

No school can completely prevent stuff like this from happening. That's why I like the two strike policy. I felt that LewJack really learned from a similar incident years ago and I expect Cline and Smotherman to do the same. I am not justifying their choices, but the best thing is if they can learn from their mistakes and grow from them.

Keep this up and we're going to have to replace the horn in Mackey with a rap air horn.

Like I said, I did a lot of dumb things when I was younger, but when I was going to do something I knew was dumb or that I could get in trouble for, I was smart enough to at least take the precautions to limit the possibility of being caught. Granted, that didn't stop me from doing said dumb thing, it just stopped me from getting in trouble for it.

How are you going to police this behavior, especially when it happens off campus. Both instances were in/around Klipsch Music Center area. Having played college basketball & coached at the high school level, this stuff happens everywhere......unfortunately.

Seems to be accepted though...glossed over...even the punishments imposed are ridiculously light and diminish the seriousness of what happened.

It is an issue no doubt at many places, but that it is not only an issue at Purdue, but has been and continues to be is just disappointing...but when the consequences are no worse than what they are and guys are more worried about themselves opposed to a bigger cause, it will no doubt continue (which is admittedly more disappointing).

I could care less if someone wants to smoke weed. But, whatever your stance is on the legality of the issue, the fact remains that it's illegal. If you get caught doing it, you're going to get punished. Eventually, the soft punishment loses it's teeth and isn't a deterrent. Then you get players with multiple offenses who end up getting dismissed, benched, suspended, whatever, and that hurts the team and fans.

Your last sentence says it all.
Imagine if every stupid thing each of us and all of our friends did was put in the Indy star sports page and every sports blog in existence (had there been any back then). Then imagine we all got kicked out of school for it.
Was it stupid? Yes. Why didn't he learn from Basils experience. He probably thought that HE wouldn't get caught. If he does it again we know how stupid he is and / or how big of a problem he has.

FWIW, Phish played at Klipsch on June 26.

I understand what you're saying, it just struck me as funny!

Cline should be dismissed. Missing 6 games is a slap on the wrist. These athletes need to be held accountable.
dismissing a player for first time offense like this is pretty harsh, I am sure Cline will learn from this and wants to play ball so he will quit doing things that screw up his life

To quote you from another thread...."No you weren't"
See problem for you is I can back my claim up with my records, uniform and anything else you want to see. You on the other hand have nothing more than hyperbole and made up stories.

Sorry buttercup, but you failed again.

I can also back-up my claims. Why is it so hard to fathom that I'm a former athlete at Purdue? There are a lot of former Purdue athletes posting here and KHC. If I'm going to make stuff up I would at least pretend to a full ticket bball or football player

Some advice, don't feed the Kessel. It will never end.

Too harsh. Painter will address this as needed. Do you recall Kelsey Barlow? He was one of the best guards on the team, and he was handled appropriately. We need to let the coach handle this.

I suspect you are not without sin yourself, so maybe you should stop casting stones. It is why I don't often criticize any specific player myself.

I agree. You could add AJ to the list as well. CMP is on top of this.

Thank you for your service, sincerely.
Seconded. Just because we don't agree with how he delivers his posts, it doesn't diminish his service in the least bit. Which I know no one is, I'm just saying.

All veterans are my hero because they all did something I couldn't and that was take an oath to give your life if needed essentially.

Thank you to all the vets.

A kid messed up and he is paying for it. Not just with the 6 games but with the embarrassment for him and his family, along with the law side of it he'll have to deal with and have on his record. Our coach will most likely make him earn playing time also after he's back..

Wouldn't you want your own kid to have a second chance on something like this especially since it looks like it is his first problem ever? Or would you want him or her to have deep scars for life and have to deal with you reminding them about it, on and on?

Now, if he doesn't learn from this....poof!

This is the infuriating thing. When the rules are clear and you saw a teammate punished for the same offense, why do you think it's OK for you to do it? I suspect it is not his first offense, just the first time he was busted.

Is he thinking that the chance of getting caught are slim and that since it's his first time getting caught, then he'll just get a suspension? Then he is playing the odds and playing games with the rules. Of course, it's possible he is not thinking at all, as others have said.

I guess you think he should be dismissed? If it happens again I doubt the punishment will be the same for 2nd offense. I am betting it doesn't happen again with Cline

If I thought he should be dismissed, I would say so. Read my post again and think about what I am saying.I will add that if Painter looked at the circumstances and dismissed him, Cline could only blame himself.
