And to put it in perspective, through 7 games so far, the team has scored 579 points.

330 points from starters (57%)
249 points from the bench (43%)

The bench has outscored the starters in 2 games, both times now that AJH is back.

Out starting 5 might not be the most talented starting 5 in the country, but I'll take our bench over any other bench in the nation.

There is virtually no drop off.

Our bench alone I think could beat a LOT of teams.

Kudos to Painter for putting this all together. He really has an eye for talent that fits his system.

This thread title sounds like a Bee Gees song:)

We are so deep that we redshirted Smotherman and Taylor. To me, that speaks "deep"!

I mentioned this right before the season.

Our bench can grab leads and build on them playing against the other teams bench players. We are that deep.

My question is this.

Now that Cline has a double digit performance. Is there any player in our ten man rotation left that hasn't had a double digit scoring game?

I don't think there is.

Admittedly, there have been years when I cringed when we went to the bench. Not this year. Great depth and chemistry. No real drop off going 10 deep.

Has Hill or Dakota and I am just forgetting?

I was actually just in the process of figuring that out when you posted.

Game Highs:

Issac 24
Hammons 24
Davis 18
Edwards 14
Stephens 12
Cline 12
Mathias 17
Hill 13
Thompson 15
Swanigan 12

Taylor is the only one who hasn't hit double figures, but he has not have enough playing time yet to really have a legitimate shot.

I might add that Hill is the only one in the rotation that hasn't made a 3.

Very nice group Painter has assembled.

Hill also hasn't missed a 3. A PG that defers to the more talented 3 point shooters on the team isn't always a bad thing. Once teams start slacking off from him and doubling others, then we might have a problem.

Really only becomes an issue when teams zone us. Which is one of the reasons PJ played 27 minutes yesterday.

It is very impressive. I made a comment in a different thread about Painter shortening the rotation as we get into Feb/Mar, but that will be tough to do. Do you expect us to keep a 10 man rotation through the season? It's hard to keep those ten off the floor.

As long as the productivity is essentially the same (55% vs 45%), then absolutely no, do not shorten the bench. Having to only play 20 minutes a game instead of 35 would be a massive benefit in both freshness of legs and to reduce the chances of injuries.

I think where you will see it tighten a bit is in terms of defensive play and that could very well be on a matchup by matchup basis. Obviously a guy like Mathias has some struggles against certain types of match-ups (last night was not his best). But there will be match-ups where we can certainly use him and he will be a great asset on both ends.

And as great as PJ has been playing, there will be some PG match-ups that are just not terrible favorable to him.

But this is why a deep team is ok. If we have one of these "bad" match-ups, we have a pretty good substitute in place. For example, for PJ, you have a much taller PG with Hill.

Spot on. This team's depth is so impressive, but I do expect the rotation to tighten up. But I think these 10 guys will always be in the mix, but 1-2 may see their minutes decrease but it likely won't be the same 1-2 each game but matchup and playing performance specific.

I think I'll just keep this as a running thread.

In the NM game, the bench outscored the starters again (3rd time this year) with 38 points versus the 32 for the starters.

Brings the totals to:
Starters: 362 (56%)
Bench: 287 (44%)

AJH is a big part of this, but hey, if it aint broke....don't fix it.

CMP also has more flexibility when it comes to dealing with foul scenarios. More so than any Purdue team I can recall, foul trouble won't be an automatic cringe and first-half hole to climb out of......not that there won't be issues in some games, especially if CS and one of AJH or Hayes pick up some early ones. This also means CMP can choose if he wants to and play a little more aggressively in certain situations even with the new "emphasis," or you might see in limited circumstances (though I don't expect it) someone play the first half with 2 fouls.

I sure in the hell hope that Taylor keeps his chin up and stays positive about his place on the team........he sure has been thru a lot, but may have to wait some more. I've pulled for the kid since he came to PU, and will continue to pull for him. Unfortunately, the team's depth this year may not be to everyone's liking.....understandably so.

If I were Painter I would play aggressively as they can without getting out of control. Even it that means fouling. Last I checked the refs all check with the scoring table from time to time to see where each team stands.

Cut myself off. How many times have you seen a couple of cheap ones called right before the half to even things up?

Adding Stats from game 9:

The starters managed to squeak past the bench by a score of 42 to 38. The score was close enough though to move the bench 1% closer though, giving us:

Starters: 404 (55%)
Bench: 325 (45%)

I know IUPUI isn't Kansas, and we have become accustomed to the deep bench. But this stat is worth repeating:

Purdue bench: 38
IUPUI bench: 5

I think your mention of Kansas is appropriate. They are the only team I have watched so far (I admit I haven't seen every team) that has our kind of depth. I can't wait to see how that comes into play against better teams. I'm hopeful we will see the benefits continue. Vandy has some depth also and quality, really looking forward to that game (no, I'm not looking past Butler)!

That's now 6 different players who have led the team in scoring at least once in the 10 wins:

-Stephens (NCA&T* - tie w/ Davis)
-Davis (NCA&T* & Florida)
-Mathias (Vermont)
-Haas (Incarnate Word, Lehigh, New Mexico)
-Hammons (ODU, Pitt, IUPUI)
-Swanigan (Howard)

Thompson (Florida), Hill (Lehigh), and Cline (Pitt) have all been the 2nd leading scorer in a game. That leaves Vince as the only regular not to have a game as leading or 2nd leading scorer -- I imagine he'll get there sometime this season.

Adding Stats from game 10:

The starters squeak by the bench AGAIN, this time with 47 to 46. Bench is still slowly catching up with the starters though.

Starters: 451 Points (55%)
Bench: 371 Points (45%)

As others have said one of the most interesting things I find about this team is you just never know who is going to go off on any give game.

I would not want to be an opposing team/coach and attempt to find a solution to the puzzle they bring.

Nope. I simply don't see that Dakota brings as much to the court as others do. And he's still not learned to value each possesion. But he does try, he hustles, and................

Let's see... Mathias
FT%: 100% (best on team)
A/T ratio: 2.0 / 0.5 = 4.0 (2nd best on team after PJ)
PF per 40 min: 3.3 (3rd best after Ray & PJ)

He's struggling to hit shots, just like Stephens has been. The two are tied at 33% from 3, and they are the worst two on the team at 3P% among those who shoot any kind of volume of 3's, but still not a horrible number. Where he has really struggled is 2-point shots. I think he will turn the shooting around. Watch and see. If we should give Stephens a chance to straighten things out, then we should also Dakota a chance. I think Dakota is a pretty good player who protects the basketball and passes well - important attributes given our offensive style. He's neither the best nor the worst on D, but he does seem to win a decent % of the 50-50 plays by being scrappy. Asset to the team IMO who will be even more valuable once more shots start falling.

Updated Stats, Game 11. Purdue starters contributed 50 points while the bench scored 45. Mr. Eifert in particular made effective use of his 3 minutes, getting in 5 points. That would seem to imply that he could put up 40 in 24 minutes of time, right? :)

Starters: 501 Points (55%)
Bench: 416 Points (45%)

Taylor's 12 pts last night tied for team high honors. Purdue has now had 9 different players lead the team in scoring in a game this season (alone or tied):

Hammons, Haas, Swanigan, Davis, Edwards, Mathias, Stephens, Thompson, Taylor

Also makes 11 that have scored double digits. That was fun seeing Taylor get some time. Just think, he still has 3 more years. He could develop into a pretty good player.

I doubt Hill will ever get added to that list. But it's not out of the question that there could be a game where Cline gets the eye of the tiger and goes off for 5 or 6 threes and gets himself a spot on Mt Scoremore too. And if not this year, you can bet he'll be there at multiple points in the coming three seasons.
