Hi Boilermakers!
I was surprised to see that your ticket contingent was sold out for our game, in Reno. I saw Indiana license plates in the tailgate areas, walked by your tailgate and hope your time was as good as it could be despite the loss. Boilermaker posters on our boards were really cool. This win was a big deal for Pack fans, I know it was disappointing for you, but think your quarterback and Moore were impressive and will have a good season.
I see that Boilermaker12 posted that, “Nevada SUCKS. My high school in Fort Wayne wouldn't lose to that team” (typos corrected).
On the other hand Mike Carmin, of the West Lafayette Journal & Courier, says, “Maybe we should start power rankings for the Mountain West (Conference). Nevada, which is a member of the league, knocked off the Boilermakers. Wyoming beat Missouri. Boise State won over Florida State. Hawaii defeated Arizona.”
I’m also an alumnus of Ohio State and I follow them too. The contrast between the Power 5 and Group of 5 is always of interest to me, especially as the money gap grows. I root for Ohio State. But Nevada is such an underdog and I’m a sucker for that (I’m a recovering Browns and Indians fan). The rare Nevada wins over a Big Ten team or a Pack 12 team is an emotional high equivalent for me, only to an Ohio State national championship.
Every year, big media contracts and all, The Big 10 sends each of their athletic programs $50 million. The SEC sends each of their schools $40 million. The Pac 12 sends their schools $30 million. The Mountain West sends each of their schools $1 million.
I get it, Nevada has no resources, so I can live with Ohio State football being 50 times better than Nevada. But, underdogs are so much fun!
Nevada will not win a national championship in football in my life time. And anyway, Nevada’s mostly a basketball school now. We do have the best Diving coach in the country. Chinese families send their kids to be coached by her. But nobody cares about diving.
I can just only hope that Nevada football never has to play that power house high school in Fort Wayne!
Go Buckeyes! Go Pack! And from here forward, go Boilermakers!
