Heard the last half hour of the always cliche and platitude ridden Darrell hazell show, and man, this guy just doesn't get it. He again said one of the keys to the game is us "establishing the run". If that is our mindset going into this game, we will lose. We need to move the ball, move the chains, and score touchdowns.

Also, I noticed there were no phone calls. Wonder why?

What can be really say that he hasn't already said a dozen times before? He has to show he can win games. No discussion of strategy or incremental improvement really matters any more.

What's wrong with establishing the run? BG is terrible against the run and the best way to keep their offense off the field is to eat up clock. It's Blough's first game and I doubt he can match BG's passing attack even against their weak defense. We need to lean on our RB's as much as possible assuming their defense continues to give up big chunks on the ground and not put Blough in a situation where he has to match BG's qb all by himself.

Actually you are the one who doesn't get it...
Of course you want to establish the run vs Bowling Green. Keep that offense off the field.

Nice flame attempt tho

might have to throw more if Bowling green puts everyone up close, they will surely make Purdue beat them with the pass with a new qb

He is 1-22 "establishing the run" against FBS schools. I said after Marshall that we wouldn't be able to pound the ball against good teams, and that proved to be the case. I predict a bunch of 3rd and 3s that we don't convert with this pig-headed strategy, we get behind, and then we HAVE to throw. We should establish the pass first, then that will open up the running lanes. But we will instead send our 5" 8" tailbacks in between the tackles every other play. Hope I'm wrong, but I don't think that's going to work.

Yeah we got popped in the mouth telegraphing a 3rd and short v. ISU, but coach Tressel just keeps going with this stuff.

You guys just get it. With our defense why can't we just keep giving it to Maurice clarett

Personally, I think Hazell said the right thing. What will be telling is HOW he and Shoop decide to establish the run game. If our first series is three runs up the gut with no success, then maybe a run outside would be something to try. When we consistently run the same plays without success, we are obviously playing into the strength (or gameplan) of the defense.

We ran one reverse last game that gained something like 20+ yards with the 26 year old freshman. AND THEN WE NEVER TRIED IT AGAIN. Here's an idea - maybe run that same play but let the first end around keep the ball and see what happens. I'm obviously not a football savant but I'm all for trying something different if what you are trying isn't working!!!

I may be crazy, but I'm heading to this game and still hoping to see some signs of progress.

We need to have a balanced attack! BG will put 8 men in the box and force us to pass if we don't....................

BG gives up 240 yds a game rushing. If Purdue can't run for at least 300 yds we're doomed. If we fall behind and are forced to the pass, we'll lose and lose badly. There's no way we can get in a shootout with BG and expect to win.

There actually were two callers this week, so you must have missed those segments.

Two callers? In an hour show, he was able to address two callers? I would not be shocked to learn that there were only two people that bothered to call, and perhaps that is the case, but that in itself speaks volumes. In addition, how do two callers constitute "segments", or even a segment for that matter over the course of an hour show?

They'll take calls at any time during the show. Tim gives the number throughout. There aren't certain segments for callers, to the best of my knowledge.

There weren't any callers the first two shows.

1st caller: "Do you know which game they will have Bob Griese collector cups?"

2nd caller: " Have they ever thought about serving beer to boast attendance?"

We're still looking for that key to the gate I guess.

I was the first caller to that show and didn't feel like my question was really answered and felt like he was some what talking coach-speak 100%.

I asked what he felt David was doing differently now that he wasn't doing in camp to give you confidence to start him. He essentially said that David wasn't doing anything differently and that he had always thought David would do a good job.

I think it's at a point that Hazell is just selling something nobody is buying at this point. If you can't deliver results, then eventually people just turn you off. It's like the friend who continually says they are going to quit drinking and they never do. At first, you are willing to help them out (showing up and buying tickets) but after the third or fourth time picking them up at the bar (failed seasons and tempered expectations), you eventually just accept them for what they are (a mediocre at best coach/staff/program).

38 carries for 77 yards. Yeah, we really "established the run". Good call.

Our only chance at winning ANY games this year is to put the ball in Blough's hands, spread people out (enough with the 2 H-back sets Weird Beard!), play uptempo (no subs!) and chuck it around the yard.

Or we can just keep slamming our 5' 7" tailback right up the gut.

You know how we have student athletes, Maybe we should try student coaches. This would save morgan burke a bunch of money.

If I was to call in I would ask the coaching staff if they would just resign, if they don't win another game this season.

Excellent suggestion; I suggested to my son that they have a lottery and have a different PU student call the plays each qtr.
It can't be worse than this could it?

Hazell is so full of BS that its embarrassing.A one excuse maker.

I think we should all call in and basically say will you accept a challenge? Will you resign if you don't win at least 2 more games this year? Just as blunt as can be. That would be seriously funny if all the calls were like that. Then when the cut the previous caller off, just continue with the challenge question. Better yet call the sponsors and see if they can get Haz to take the challenge. I'd tell advertisers no one hears your spots because no one is interested in the game.

I can answer your question -- because we asked Hazell similar things on that Tuesday when he announced the quarterback change. The move was strictly based on Appleby's turnovers, nothing else. Hazell said that repeatedly throughout the week in several different appearances, as did John Shoop when he was simply asked "why Blough?"

So when we -- or you -- asked about Blough in a way as if Blough did something to earn the starting job, it's not going to work. He was just the next guy up, if that makes sense.

I understand that but if the issues were TO's and David was so close, why wasn't he given a snap earlier in the VT or Marshall games when the history of game performance was there from the previous year already for Appleby? I get that his answer is that it was simply because of the TO's but unless they had significant confidence in him, they wouldn't have made a change. I'm just confused at how, all things considered, Blough wasn't given the nod over him to begin with. I went to my fair share of spring and fall workouts along with the spring game and jersey scrimmage...IMO Blough outplayed him consistently. Did Blough have TO's? Sure, but was that a product of Appleby playing in to the main factor of what determined the QB race or that Blough was trying to make plays happen?

If DH1 and DH2 ever collaborate on a book about their experiences coaching football at Purdue, "Next Man Up" would certainly be a fitting title for the chapter about quarterbacks.

He` on a milk run and wants to be fired. He knows that Burk is a carp laying in shallow water who is afraid to admit he made a dumb hire
