Harbaugh has michigan turned around in one year

We could not afford a Harbaugh, but I believe there is a Harbaugh-lite somewhere be it a I-AA school, an assistant, etc. that we could get? On the other hand could M organ find one? Absolutely not.

The difference is a good coach instead of a poor one.

I mean it's not THAT simple. The major difference with Purdue and Michigan is that Michigan had an abundance of talent already in place.

It's fools gold to think that kind of "flip" can happen at Purdue overnight in one offseason. Yes, Tiller did a big turnaround - but our talent level now is not anywhere near what even Tiller had. Colletto wasn't a bad recruiter (hence why we could upset teams and earn "Spoilermaker" nickname), he was a bad head coach.

The ideal turnaround would take place - just in a slower progression. Offseason one: clean house. Take care of the existing team you have, see who buys in, etc. and get a recruiting strategy in place. Offseason two: tweak any staff hires you need to. Coaches don't always get to hire all the assistants they want immediately because of timing. Going into your second season, the systems should be in place and the players should be executing those systems. The catch is obviously talent level. But you should start to see progress. Going into the third year, you have 2 classes of your guys, albeit young, and a system should be understood. Again, you should see some progress on the field - may not be significant, but it should still be there (i.e. not at two wins..).

My big thing with Hazell the whole time has been recruiting. It doesn't surprise me we're where we are today because our recruiting has basically forecasted it. We haven't been recruiting on a Big Ten level - even a mediocre level. Do we need to be top 3 in the Big Ten? Absolutely not. Should we be #12-14 each year? Absolutely not.

Tiller flipped a 3-8 team to 9-3. Jim Young took a 2nd year but flipped us. While our talent pool may not be quite the same comparison, coaching can improve things. Hazell has shown no progress.

I agree on both points - I just think comparing us to Michigan is silly. Going from 3-8 to 9-3 is great - but shouldn't be the expectation.

I really think if we had the right coach we could have won more games this season. Hazell just ain't the one.

Amen! Was there really a need for us to have to endure a 1-11 in 2013? And now in year 3 of this "rebuilding" we are likely to finish with 2 victories. This tolerance of clearly awful performance is totally unacceptable. And with deteriorating recruiting on the horizon there is no hope of improvement. Haz is a lousy coach - can't recruit, can't coach up, can't game coach, can't select good staff. What are we waiting for?

I'm sure there is something else Morgan can't find even with both hands.

The talent level that was at Michigan for harbaugh to work with was vastly better than here. That made for an easier turn around also. Purdue will NEVER get a front line football coach. The only hope for PU is "lightning in a bottle." Get an up and comer that stays here and does well for 3-4 years until some big dog woos him away.

Exactly. Kids grow up wanting to play for the Wolverines. That program is always going to have talent. We have to work for our recruits. We need a proven coach that is looking for redemption. Butch Davis, Bo Pelini, Brady Hoke etc...Someone with something to prove. Look at Leach and Rich Rod. We need someone that can sell himself and the school. Someone who has a hard on with a chip on his shoulder that wants to prove something.

The point being made here is what coaching can do!!!!!! Michigan was awful last year with that talent.........what a difference good coaching can do is the key! No we don't have the same talent level(Sick of hearing we have no talent) point being we should be a hell of a lot more competitive in games and should be winning more! Losing to Marshall and BG in year three is pathetic at best! I am still trying to figure out what our identity as a team is three years into this debacle!

With $40+ million in unearned TV revenue, Purdue can afford to pay a decent coach. Any other spin on this is just pure BS. It is the Purdue President, AD that NEED to be held accountable if they will not dismiss the current coaching set. Yes, I am including the University president. If he wanted DH dismissed, Burke would do it or he would be gone as well.

You really think that money hasn't been allocated yet? It was spent as soon as the projections came out

re-allocation is another management term too. That is what I am doing. Re-allocating my discretionary funds to enjoyable activities. Which for those in the AD does not include Tickets to Purdue Football.

What are we doing with this money? I'm serious. With that kind of money coming in there is no need for us to have this defeatist attitude that we can not attract and retain an exceptional coaching staff. We made a bad decision in hiring Hazell. A lot of people at the time thought it was a good move. It's not working. Cut your losses and move forward. I fail to understand this inertia in the face of clearly horrible performance and a fairly high probability of a very poor 2016 gate and non existent merchandise sales not to mention damage to the reputation of the university. I watched the BG-Toledo game last night and I kept wondering how these teams could be executing on a level so much better than ours. And if I see that why doesn't the university see that.

No the string is titled "Harbaugh turned it around in one year." There are multiple reasons for that - coaching is just one; basic available unused talent is a 2nd. Lou Saban is a great coach and wins all the time in college but he can't lead Alabama to victory over ANY NFL team because of the chasm in the level of talent. 1 Rose Bowl win in 40+ years versus multiple wins for Michigan and Ohio State aren't just having better coaching. Talent MAKES coaches look good to.

Coaching is huge. The best ones are in the mix year after year and find ways of winning the close ones. Their success isn't tied to one player. Their teams show up ready to play every week and their kids are on board with the program. Saban, Meyer, Stoops, Fisher, Kelly, and Harbaugh are the elites imo.

they also have a fan base that got together to demand that their administration get rid of B. Joke.
