I asked myself after that play: "Did the ref blow a whistle first, or did Hammons actually grab a one-armed rebound with a shoe in his other hand and call a timeout?". I don't think the announcers realized what had happed until quite a bit later when the replay was about to be shown.

This needs to be preserved on Youtube alongside such classics as Kramers' swim-move and knee shot, Octeus' dunk through Hartman in Bloomington, and Barlow posterizing Sully at OSU.

This was one of the funniest moments in Purdue basketball history. It actually made me laugh out loud to see the big fella get a board with a shoe in his hand.

Maybe the funniest part about it was watching him pick the shoe up on the other side of the court and awkwardly run down court to get in position for the board. I figured he'd either leave it or try to put it on quickly. Then after the play during the timeout, he still carried the shoe around until Painter seemed to tell him "Put that thing on now". I couldn't stop laughing.

I don't think that was funny, That was late in the game with a close game. He loses his shoe and casually runs down court??? Getting a rebound with one hand. Yeah Painter was laughing but more like wtf are you doing? This team doesn't trust him to put it out there every night. I get it early in game. But the game was on the line.

what team does't trust who? if you are talking about AJH...never mind this can't be a serious post

So you want a 260 lb, 7' giant to sprint with one sneaker on and a sock on the other foot...now that's a recipe for disaster for certain. If you listened to his post-game comments, he was hurrying back as quickly as he could to try to prevent the score, and it's just that much more impressive that he got the rebound too.

Actually, I have to side with TJ on this one. What if he hadn't secured the rebound because he was holding his shoe (for no good reason) and going after the ball with one hand? What if that cost them the game? If you watch enough basketball you see guys lose a shoe all the time. You just play through it. Eventually, when it does not disadvantage the other team, the ref will blow the whistle and you can put your shoe back on or you call a TO, which he ended up doing anyway.

I've also seen a guy slip on the floor at the Barn and tear his ACL, crushing a great chance at a Final Four. I'm just fine with AJ being a little conservative there. When is the last time you tried to run on a basketball court with one shoe on and just a sock on the other foot?

And how did carrying his shoe around in one hand make that situation any safer? He wasn't stopping to put it on either way. Do you think the ref was only going to blow the whistle if AJ had the shoe in his possession?

It was definitely the wrong thing to do. He should have kept playing. Luckily it worked out and will end up in the Hall of Fame of hilarious Purdue basketball moments. I was laughing my ass off. It was a nice moment of levity in a tense game.

What if Lebron James had opted to go to Purdue instead of pro? What if Big Dog came back and they let him have his last year of eligibility back? What if we had changeable rims and ours was always 4 foot wide and at halftime they moved it to our end of the court and put a 10" wide one on the opponents end? So.............................. WHAT IF????? The guy made a play not one person on this board could make. They play turned out OK for Purdue and we ended up with a W. WHAT IF?????????????? Bunch of whiny know-it-all internet legends that can never be happy.

I'm plenty happy with the win. Watching it live, I just thought he made that play unnecessarily difficult by his own strange decision to hold onto the shoe. Nice job with the hyperbole btw. ;)

I would have left the shoe behind, but if he planned on putting it on, you do it on the defensive end. Maybe he had that idea (leave us shorthanded with the ball instead of on D), but didn't really think it all the way through.

I think my "issue" is that he was holding his shoe once he got down the court. That's not helping anyone out. Put the shoe down - no one is gonna steal it.

The only reasonable option for putting the shoe down is to throw it to the bench on the way down the floor. If you drop it on the floor and somebody steps on it and turns and ankle or blows a knee (likely one of our guys) it becomes a bigger issue. He completed the play. No harm no foul.

I mean it's not worth dwelling on, but I think if the play resulted in Minnesota scoring cause AJ had a shoe in his hand, it wouldn't have been as funny. I've never seen a player carry around their shoe. Not the priority.

But it's over and done and probably won't happen again.

Not saying it was the wisest move, but there may have been a reason he kept it nearby. If another Purdue player got the rebound, the team could hold the ball for a few seconds without calling a timeout while he put it on. Besides, that's probably not something Painter spends practice time preparing for - just a fluke and it worked out thanks to AJ's position and awareness.

David Teague once lost his shoe during the game, ran down the court, and made a 3 pointer.

I don't remember a lot of the other details, but I know it wasn't his senior year. Anyone else remember that?

Nothing will top Kramer making a shot from his knees in the NCAA tournament.

Yes, that's the first thing I thought of when AJ lost his shoe. I was thinking Teague made a defensive stop, then he came down and hit a 3 in the corner. It's been awhile, so my memory is fuzzy, but I was at that game.

AJH and his "shoe rebound" made the Today Show and Pardon the Interruption today. Tony and Wilbon really liked the play. I laughed at the replay, and really enjoyed the fun. It was only a five point lead, but AJH did his job one handed.

One thing I'm surprised no one else mentioned is Hammons absolutely got away with a foul on the rebound. He shoved the Minnesota player (Murphy I think) under the basket before grabbing the ball.
Yeah, he did LOL.

What if he hadn't secured the rebound? But he did secure it. Why wring your hands over something that didn't happen? There are enough REAL things to worry about in life. Why worry about something that didn't happen?
