Haarms practice video

He looks a little slow on his shot but I am sure that can be cleaned up.

Does anyone else thing he looks a bit taller than Haas when they are going against each other.

Glad that he is getting a year (half) to practice with Haas and Swanigan. That will speed his growth into the college game.

He does look taller than Haas to me. As to being slow, given his height and decent ball handling, I doubt he's ever needed a quick shot to beat his opponent.

Pretty smooth for a tall and young player. Appears to have the ability (from the video) to stop and hit a 'jump' shot (I finger quote that because not sure a 7 footer needs to jump). His ability to turn and square up and hit a jumper is something that can really be an equalizer for him on the offensive end against more athletic big men. Keeping them honest with that ability will give him an edge while getting post position because they have to be worried about that mid-range jumper (which is why I think Biggie is a more effective overall post player than Haas (Haas really only shoots within 6 feet up the bucket).

And what's great is that when you're as tall as him, you don't need a super quick release.

He's holding his own against Haas and Biggie. Looks like he could be really good.

First pass into Haas made Haarms look like a snail. And Haas is not very quick. Second time Haas got the pass, he did the pause and hold before making a move. Haarms still could not stop Haas. Looks like Haarms needs big time conditioning drills as he looked winded. Not overly impressed in this take it easy practice drill.

1 on 1 drills is a lot different when you got no weakside help for the defender.

Wow. You were able to deduce all the activities which occurred prior to that 4 rep drill video to know that he should not be tired at that point in practice. Impressive. Your knowledge of post play is equal to your deductive reasoning.

Please understand that the Purdue players have been running Purdue workouts since last summer. Haarms, just a few weeks. No one expects him to be in mid-season condition.

Thanks,

He does look winded.

I was watching the last 100 m of the Olympic Marathon the other day and the competitors looked winded.... I was concerned that they weren't prepared or in shape.

On a side note who cares if he looks winded, he is working out... becoming a better player.

Purdue could use some more of that in games as well (weak-side help). Some of it might be by design (so that it will be tougher for opposing players in the paint to kick it out to open teammates if the help comes quickly) but other times I think it's just teammates not coming over in time to help on someone making a move in the paint.

Obviously the hair :)

He might be a tad taller, but hard to tell ... maybe greater wingspan as well? Definitely 60+ lbs lighter (listed as 230 on the Purdue site) ... but he seems to hold his own in the video, albeit not at the same speed or intensity that he'll see in-game. If he can gain 15-20 (good weight) over the next year or so that will definitely help.

He can probably clean up the release a bit.

Athletically, he looks smooth for a 7-2 guy ... even in his other 'highlight' videos. Thinking more of transition and lateral movement. Probably never going to have the speed and hops needed to be a dynamic rebounder/shot blocker, but seems to have better reaction time than Haas so that only helps.

Definitely excited about his potential.

I'll point to CMP's comments about Jujuan's seemingly inability to pack on muscle while at Purdue. He said its one thing to simply pack on bad weight and such and another thing to have applicable strength. JJ as a junior and senior rarely got pushed around in the post even though he didn't weigh much more then 240 pounds. If you look at Haarms body, he will probably be hard pressed to pack on 20+ pounds but if he adds 10-15 pounds of applicable muscle, he will be a handful. He is much more of a JJ type center with better handles and more range. Having him and a potentially healthy Taylor is a nice proposition next season.

JaJuan was only 6-10 though. The equivalent weight of a 7-2 player vs 6-10 220 pounder would be 253.

And he currently weighs about 225. I am guessing after getting a full start on the lifting and meal programs offered at Purdue, Haarms may end up getting to a good 240. That would be a great weight for him to play at without hurting his mobility, imo.
