Per the front page, if you didn't see it.

He's going to enroll and play at Midland JC (TX) (same JC that Nemanja Calasan came from) this fall. I'll be interested to see how productive he can be and what subsequent choices he will have for DI schools in the spring. I figure he's a mid-major talent (on the hardwood; he might be better suited for the gridiron) but you never know if he'll be able to go that route or try to catch on to another high-major program.

This was always a questionable offer at best. Figured he would have stayed since he most likely won't be at another school as good as Purdue for basketball. Curious what went on in his end of season meeting with painter.

I hope you are not trying to make fun of the young man. I am glad he has found a place to go and wish him the very best.
Can't blame the young man for accepting an unlikely offer...was not his fault that he was in over his head...hopefully he finds a place ultimately that is a good fit and where he has an opportunity for some success and happiness.

No, I was dead serious. Was practicing and not playing more difficult than he expected? Surely painter made no promises when he gave him an offer. I can't believe that he thought he was going to get major minutes.

None of this matters in the big picture. I find your post disappointing and inappropriate. DG10, your post fits the same category.

Kids have dreams often of making more of their lives than is projected.

Speaking the truth is not 'making fun' of the young man. The truth is, he's not a B10 caliber talent point guard. Not his fault, it is what it is. Painter's fault for a poor evaluation and scholie offer.

The truth is he wasn't ready to contribute last season as determined by the parties involved in making the decision to redshirt. Anything beyond that is speculation/opinion.

Since you're offering your opinion, I'm curious to know how many complete games you've seen him play.

I saw enough video of him to know he was going to be a practice contributor at best. You can also look at his other scholie offers and that's a pretty good indication of what other programs thought about his current and future potential.

There are lists of kids that either everyone or everyone but one program was wrong about. Kramer was one. If memory serves, the offers for Drew Brees were something like Purdue/Wyoming (because of Tiller) and Kentucky. Every spring now there are top programs swarming like vultures for some 5th year transfers that went to small schools because they didn't have any big offers coming out of high school only to prove they had what it takes to succeed at the top level.

My point is that you didn't see enough of him to form a valid opinion on your own and relying on offers is not exactly a fool-proof way to evaluate.

Furthermore, even if all he was ever going to be was a practice player who picked up spot minutes here and there and served as a competent emergency backup as an upperclassman, there's nothing wrong with that. You need kids like that in a program because 13 players aren't going to get regular minutes from game to game.

Here was your thought process:

bonefish doesn't like Painter ---- one of Painter's recruits transferred out ---- opportunity for bonefish to take a jab at coach he doesn't like.

Very transparent. Take the jabs if you must but spare me your uninformed scouting report in the process.

I don't think this should be seen as an indictment on Painter. Grant was brought in mainly as a practice player. I can't believe anything more was promised to a kid that had no other major offers.

We need practice players. Painter knew he wasn't going to get anybody else of value in that class.

This isn't a big loss; I'm not upset about anything. I'm just surprised that someone who was given a lottery ticket chose to not cash it in. A free Purdue education and 5 years on a good B10 team with a chance to play minutes in year 3 or 4 does not come around everyday. Apparently Grant would rather play at a JUCO? I don't get it. But everybody's different I guess.

Where did I say I didn't like Painter? All I said was that Painter made a mistake in offering a kid a scholie to a B10 school who wasn't B10 caliber talent. I'm willing to give MP 2-3 more years, depending on what he does with the '17 class since it's loaded with in-state talent. If he doesn't land a big time class, then I believe his times up and the new AD will make a change.

Regarding Weatherford. I'll make you a $100 bet that he doesn't end up at a Power 5 conference school to play hoops after his juco stint. Money goes to our favorite charity.

You didn't have to say it here.

Why would I make such a bet? I haven't seen the kid play so I'm not going to make silly statements about his abilities.

BTW, unless you are going to be the new AD or someone he'll report to, which I doubt, it doesn't matter what you are "willing to give" Coach Painter. Some of the people here think they are MUCH more important than they are.

I don't think this should be seen as an indictment on Painter.

It only is seen that way by morons with an agenda. Ones who think it matters how much time THEY "are willing" to give the coach to impress them.

not everyone can be a starter...teams need glue guys and role players.....

I wish Grant well and he is a hard nosed kid that will end up doing great things.....

why you ask...because he cares and has the ability to be successful.

Good luck Grant...kick some butt!

I'm just curious: How do you know he cares? Cares about what?
I think every player 'cares'. I would argues that Ronnie Johnson 'cared'.

If you really want to be successful in academic, you don't go to JUCO. If you really want to be successful in sports, you don't go to JUCO neither. I am sorry to say that, and I hope he reads this and change his mind.

Every time when I see players quitting Purdue and going to JUCO, I question coaches' eyes. They should have gone to JUCO to begin with. Don't come here.

cares about being successful...

But I'm asking you how you know he cares about being successful? What's he done to prove that or did he tell you personally?
Like I said, every player 'cares', even players we like to rip (Ronnie Johnson).

Personally.....good kid, great family...he will end up just fine.....bummer it will not be at Purdue, but he has the drive/care to be successful and prove people wrong.....even though that's not his agenda to prove people wrong....but he will with his actions.

Boiler Up!

Ronnie Johnson cared about himself at the expense of the team.

Um... OK.

I see it as a win for Weatherford. He wanted to play and learned that he had too much of a hill to climb as we continue to recruit higher ranked players. His year at Purdue will serve him well at the JUCO level and he'll likely get a decent offer if he makes the most of his time this year and develops. His year on the Boiler bench didn't hurt a one of us on here so why make it look like it did? I wish him the best in life. He's a kid. He took a chance on a dream and it didn't work out the way he had hoped. Not the first one that's happened to and not the last either.
