Good tweet regarding recruiting Indiana

Saw this. I think we have a really good chance to land Eli Pancol. Haven’t seen Jack Kiser tweet about recruiting in awhile. Would love Sampson James and Justin Britt

I believe the shocker is the knowledge a Purdue recruit chose Purdue over a recent offer from Clemson.

You must be talking about Karlaftis, who I think just got an offer from Clemson. However, he verballed to us in the Fall. These big time programs are still trying to get him to change his mind. I thought I saw a month ago where the Michigan DC was at one of his basketball games. I don’t see him changing his mind though. He seems to be a Purdue and Brohm fan who sees the bigger picture of us getting back on top again and he can help lead us there.

Yup! And to many like the originator of that tweet, to have an elite recruit stay true to Purdue when the blue bloods take interest and make offers is a bit of a shocker! Times have changed at Purdue - for the better .

What do they mean by real shockers?

That the staff is making progreee at Indiana high schools that were completely ignored by the last two coaching reigns. Add that IU appears to be Florida focused right now, and Purdue may get back in these schools good graces quickly

Got commits from two Indiana players already and appear to be in the mix for James, Kiser, Britt, Bell, Tracy, etc

Mat not land a lot of these guys that are currently stopping in for spring practices, but the fact these highly recruited and highly ranked guys are stopping at Purdue at all is a significant sign of improvement. I think if Brohm is able to solidify this class (really his 3rd class) as a top 40 class anchored by Karlaftis and possibly one or two other 4* and some highly regarded 3* players, his 4th class will likely be another major jump and potentially in to the top 25 national rankings. It will be that jump in recruiting that likely places Purdue in the 2021-2022 season to get Purdue in to a real shot at winning the West division with Karlaftis' class as juniors, a hopeful bump in recruiting class as sophomores, along with this current class (Plummer, Moore, Anderson, Taylor) as seniors....that is the year Purdue could really make some noise, IMO.

Why do you think previous coaches avoided the state on Indiana? I know there isn't as much talent as down south but I think you have to get recruits in your own area.

Good question, and one without a good answer.

For a long, long time I've thought we were negligent in not pursuing more kids from IN, IL and, especially OH. Sure, we've gotten some good players from those states, but it sure has seemed like we could have landed a lot more.

Hazell couldn’t recruit so he was a bust and hope didn’t have any relationships with Indiana High school coaches

Pretty simple

Hazell definitely couldn't recruit. I remember hearing how he had all these contacts in OH. We got beat all the time by other teams for OH recruits, even by teams like UK. Painter could have recruited OH better for football. He has shown it well in basketball with Mathias and Edwards.

Hope had a love affair with any recruit from the state of FL. He thought any 2 star from FL was the equivalent of a 3/4 star in the Midwest.

I think a coach and his assistants should keep in contact with the state's high school coaches. This is beneficial for various reasons.

The realities about recruiting IN that bodes well for JB (and makes it an even bigger head scratcher for DH) is that over the last 15 - 20 years top end IN talent (number of kids that can play at tOSU, Bama, etc.) has increased; and the depth/number of player that can play at high D-1/Power 5 programs has likewise increased. So, more and bigger fish in the local pond. Better yet, if you focus on about 15 high schools, you've pretty much got it covered. Spend time lots of time at Warren Central, Ben Davis, Carmel, Center Grove, Cathedral and you've probably covered 70% of the kids. Add Lawrence, Fishers, HSE, Penn, Merrillville, Avon, Brownsburg, Pike and you've covered 90%. I'm not saying ignore all other high schools or kids at other high schools - just that systematically spending a lot of time at those schools building relationships with coaches and bringing kids in from those schools to plant seeds in younger kids that watch where upper classmen go . . . is "all" it takes to give yourself a reasonable chance of succeeding in recruiting kids from IN that can play at that level for winning programs. Throw in the fact that JB and his staff seem to be really well received and liked by the high school coaches and count me VERY optimistic that real change is afoot. I love me some Jeff Brohm #BrohmSquad

Brother, it wasn't just a "DH" thang.

At times, even Tiller was excoriated for failing to go after very local IN talent. Heck, he made a last-minute play for a future NFL TE (Keller).

Go back and scour the recruits documented by Rivals since 2002. IN talent has gone everywhere. Much of the time because of our inattention.

According to 247Sports we have an offer out to the #15 ranked 2019 WDE Beau Robbins from Carmel. I remember reading that he grew up a ND fan but does anyone know if there is serious interest in Purdue?

No interest at all. Although I’m a grade below him I go to Carmel and also went to the same middle school as him. Pretty sure he was a big IU or ND fan. But I’ve heard he’s really interested in OSU. Urban Meyer was at Carmel a few weeks ago. Saw him talking to the head PE teacher

But Caleb Shaffer who’s a 3 star o linemen is very interested in Purdue. As of about a month ago we are his leader.

Do you think he’ll get other B1G offers?

Also, do you think we’ll offer Joey Schmidt? Would love to get him.

Cole Brevard a possibility for us too?

But cole is going to be offered from all the big schools. I sit 3 seats away from him in one of my classes. When/ is he takes a Purdue vist before the end of the school year I’ll try to talk to him about it. But here’s the thing about cole... i think he could end up like Arak a McDuffie... if you know what I mean

I think I’d add FW Snider to your list. But I get your point.
