First the bad, if the leaked rumor news turns out to be true we will have to live with Coach Hazell for another season BUT the drums are starting to beat that Sumlin at A&M seat is heating up and they are expecting big improvements to finish this season and next or the rumor down here is that after next season they will look to move on and make a change!

Everything I've read suggest Sumlin has lost the team by botching his QB situation. His team also has a habit of losing games it has no business losing. Are we sure we'd want him?

Can't see where his record shows that A&M loses to teams they are supposed to beat but he has not recently had his team competing against the Alabama's and top end SEC powers lately but who does and he has shown at Oklahoma, Houston and at A&M that he can RECRUIT and close the deal with today's' athletes...I would take him in a heartbeat if I were Purdue!

Heard from friends in Texas weeks ago that Sumlin was in hot water. Before the Bama game if I recall correctly.

Sumlin's not going anywhere for awhile and for multiple reasons.
1. His buyout is like $20mil at this point in his contract.
2. The team is 6-3 and going to finish 8-4 at worst. While a national championship would have been great, I think it was beyond reasonable expectation with their D still lagging behind the conference a but, their average OL and their QB situation.

For openers, those that think Sumlin recruited Manziel are wrong. Sherman had him on campus long before Johnny football showed up. He was a RS Freshman when Sumlin took over. Is he a great coach? Not sold on that. A good coach, yes. Manziel was worth at least additional 3 wins in two years as a once every generation player in CFB. He was that good.

Would love very little more than seeing Sumlin come home no matter how long a shot it is...

And with Sumlin coming back, I feel he would get the long term chances to build the program to where it is needed. A Purdue grad and former coach who comes back would be enough for me to give him more than enough time.

The report about Hazell is old news. Miami literally went from saying Al Golden is not being fired to firing him within a few days. So that has no bearing.

The only thing I've seen about Sumlin is in regards to his offensive coordinator. I'd be pretty shocked to see anything happen to him this year. Is A&M great? No, but my gosh, they were in the top 25 last week. I think your drum beats are not really rooted in too much.

I think you are incorrect and multiple media reports printed and over the air waves are saying the same thing...his seat is warm now and will get very hot IF at the end of NEXT season the team is not where they want it to be...

The fact that he's underperforming this year largely due to his handling of his two QBs is not a concern? He can definitely recruit, but maybe start beating teams like Auburn at home and not promising both of your QBs they will be the starter. I do think he could be in trouble after next year. The fanbase will turn on him quickly. His honeymoon is over.

Let me see. Sumlin, Hazell, Sumlin, Hazell, Sumlin , Hazell.

Yea, that IS a tough one.

I'm going to get a little crazy with this one and go with

SUMLIN

Call me crazy, but if there was really was mutual interest on all sides, the two ADs could work it out financially. I realize MB was not a Sumlin supporter, but he might change his mind now as this could save his legacy.

Exactly. Like 2 NBA GMs trading bad contracts back and forth, just match up the salaries. We get Sumlin, they get the highest paid WR coach of all time, an "eccentric" OC, and the master of the "bend and then break" defense.

Or if A&M really wants out (which Idk if they do), A&M could agree to void the contract thus negating the requirement of the buyout, Sumlin agrees to void the contract negating A&M's responsiblity for his compensation, and Purdue gives Sumlin the same contract terms as the A&M contract. The result is A&M walks away free and clear, Sumlin makes the same money and goes home to Purdue, MB saves his reputation, and Boiler Nation goes wild. Everyone wins.

We actually hired a well known FB coach from Texas with a better record than Sumlin (86-31). We all know how that turned out.

Four months ago I would've been ecstatic to get him. He just got worked by unranked team at home. He promised both of his QBs they were the starter, which got out to the entire team. If I'm picking between a great game day caller versus a great recruiter, I'm picking the game day coach every time.

This argument is moot anyway. Sumlin isn't coming here.

Who claimed he did? Look at his past recruiting classes and they are full of 4 & 5 star rated talent, the man can recruit!

Is he bill Belichick or Urban Mayer? No.

Is he better than our current coach in pretty much every way? Yes.

Is he more proven than the MAC head coach or the P5 assistant we would otherwise get? Yes.

Would he come and work for The Non Revenue King? Probably not.

1. His buyout is like $20mil at this point in his contract.

I assume it is paid over the course of the next 4 years (not sure the duration of his contract) AND is offset by any money he makes coaching during the buyout period. Isnt that fairly standard? Dont know - genuinely asking.

So Purdue hires him for $5mm a year (i know, dream on). Doesnt that virtually negate the buyout owed to him by A&M?

That is our issue with coach Hazel and his 6.6mm. No other team would hire him other than as a position coach for 200k which would offset his buyout. So the only option to fund his buyout is a) sugar daddy alum donor or b) pimp team out to play at Alabama a couple times for $2mm per pop.[/QUOTE]
