What are your thoughts? Gives us another high profile game against a really good program on the road. Wish it could be at Mackey, but a win would be a huge resume builder.

I like it. Just as you said it's a high profile game and we need more of those. It will make us better IMO win or lose.

I like it. I still would prefer to see us paired against UNC or Duke because I think it becomes a game of national interest. However, it's a VERY challenging game in a road environment. Virginia has been the best program record wise the last couple years in the ACC, yet probably deserve more respect nationally. They lose Brogden, but have plenty of solid contributors back from last years Elite Eight team. They have a nice recruiting class coming in (including Kyle Guy).

We won't be favored, but it will be a good test for the team and we will be a better team in March for having played this game (even if we lose). I don't know their personnel that well, but from the little I saw, they are good defensively and on the boards. Our guards need to limit turnovers and we need to take advantage of Haas down low (and Swanigan - assuming he comes back).

I don't know who wins, but you can probably bet the farm that both teams will often use up the shot clock and the pace will be below average in terms of # of possessions. Also, neither team will full court press. Ironically, Virginia probably makes the Final Four if they take care of Syracuse's press late in the game. We all know what happened to us against Little Rock.

Not the game I thought Purdue would end up with but not surprised either. Definitely a good test and should help the schedule/metrics either way. It will be interesting to see the over/under on this game, and I think this one might get a little "physical."

yep. wonder how hard it will be to get tickets to this game. It's a decent drive from DC but would be a new venue for me.
It should be part of Virginia's season ticket package, so the game will be 'sold out'. Scalped tickets should be available on game day in front of the JPJ, but I have no idea what sort of price they will demand. Otherwise, look to StubHub.

Ya I can't see myself making that drive without tickets in hand. I'll keep an eye on stubhub. Hopefully there won't be too much demand online.

So far, this is probably Purdue's best non-conference schedule in a long time. Elliott Bloom has done a very good job up to this point.

-vs. Villanova for the Gavitt Games
-vs. two out of three of Auburn, Texas Tech, and Utah State in the Cancun Challenge
-at Virginia in the B1G/ACC Challenge
-vs. Arizona State for the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden in NYC
-vs. Notre Dame at Banker's Life Fieldhouse in Indy for the Crossroads Classic (it's time to win a damn game in that!)

Yep and have success and show well in all the above and we'll be a force in the B1G this year and well positioned for the post season.

IMO Virginia is so similar to Purdue in style of slow pace offense, defense first mentality and those reasons mentioned are why both struggle in NCAA Tournament. Should still be a nice measuring stick game on the road early on.

You are correct. This is one heck of a schedule. Part of me was hoping for NC or Duke just because it is a sexy name but Virginia is right up there. This will get them ready for the Big Ten season and playing tough team on the road will prepare them for March. I cant wait.

I'm not sure if you're trolling or not, but Purdue's number of possession last season was definitely higher than Virginia's on a per game basis. Last season, Purdue had their highest team PPG average since the 1997-1998 season.

With a team full of talented veterans, this is the year to have a schedule like this.

along with THAT irony....Purdue critics said Purdue didn't attack the press and loss. Virginia attacked the press and squandered the lead quickly to lose... :)

Now if they just get a neutral site game vs. Duke or Kentucky, that would cap off being fully-challenged in the pre-conference schedule.

Not trolling. I just see a lot of similarities between both schools and for whatever reason both usually have high expectations come tourney time just to come up short. Purdue PPG might have increased but until CMP tweaks his offensive style of play Purdue will struggle not only in tourney but also on recruiting trail as well.

I would like to see the offense spaced out more, kind of like a pro set (teams like Iowa State, Duke, Notre Dame, and so on usually have that sort of configuration in their half-court offense). What would you like Purdue to tweak in their half-court approach?

You nailed it. Spacing which would maybe would entice more athletic guards to take a look at Purdue during recruiting. Would be nice to have a few who can create or get their shot when needed.

I think that Purdue's spacing was largely a function of it's personel, particularly when Swanigan was playing the 4. When Robbie Hummel was playing the 4 a few years ago, Purdue's spacing was a lot different.

If I was going to compare a Big Ten team in the last few years to UVa, it would not be Purdue. I think that MSU is probably the closest comparison overall (offense, defense, and personel), while Wisconsin is the best comparison in terms of deliberate style of play.

"Spacing" is a function of outside threats and inside threats (both generally)...it has nothing to do with athletic guards, not that they are not important but that athleticism does not create spacing. If a team like Purdue a few years ago cannot shoot on the perimeter, why extend the D? If Purdue is not a threat inside, but rather a threat only on the perimeter...why not extend the D with no worries inside. Only when the threat inside and out exists is spacing at a max generally. If you have athletic perimeter players that are also threats on the perimeter, then the D has to extend and it opens up driving lane...but all predicated on perimeter threats more than athleticism. No threat on the perimeter and spacing will never happen. Now 5 perimeter threats can create spacing but anyone of the five not a threat and that defender drops off in help D. The rules the last two years aided the offensive players that were a threat and could still drive. Your desire for what you see as athletic players seems to me to be more about playing style that spacing. Those players driving three years ago didn't get the protection they do today with the rule change and emphasis. Purdue enhanced the perimeter shooting, but never added the athleticism to go with that perimeter shooting...

All good points. I really think that if Swanigan goes pro, a line-up of Haas, Vince Edwards, Cline, Mathias, and Spike/PJ would stretch opposing defenses very well.

Yes,let's hope for a few more drives by Dakota and cline

I hope you are correct but if you remember in Tournament game against Arkansas Little Rock Biggie sat late and we lost.

I have a hunch that Carsen Edwards could be more valuable than expected next season. We don't know if Albrecht will fully recover and I think we probably saw Thompson at his peak performance this past season. He might be able to be as efficient as last season, but I'm not sure that he can make a much bigger jump than that.

I remember, but that loss was about a lot more than just spacing. Also, don't interpret my comment to imply that I think that Purdue will be better if Swanigan goes pro. I think that Purdue will be helped greatly if Swanigan returns. My point is that for the most part, Painter tried to play to Purdue's advantages last year and if that meant that the lane was clogged, so be it. Similarly, Tony Bennett played to UVa's strengths, which unlike Purdue were clearly in the backcourt.

What? You mean coaches consider who they have as they tweak an offense or defense? Certainly there are approaches that are more right than wrong...generally, but specifically things can get blurred in a game that can be won or loss in a few seconds as players process things and decide what it is they decide.... :)
