God Bless Purdue..........but lets be realistic.

1. Bring in a new coach, which is probable, who recruits 2/3 stars? It will take 2/3 years to develop them. Iowa, MS, NW have this down to a science. But you get the pipeline going. But I would reach out to a new coach who can immediately bring in 3/4 stars. Name person. Cost $3M. Tom Herman is going big time if he goes. Not to Purdue. Hire a great assistant who wants to be a HC in the Big Ten. Not an ex-Alum. They are 50/50 at all schools.

2. Forget recruiting in Indiana. Notre Dame, Indiana have that covered. Not many recruits. We will get 1 or 2 from a field of 10 maybe. We use to have Chicago covered. Go back there.

3. Pass/run 60/40. Find the next Brees. Overlooked in their geography, Basketball on Grass again. That is our heritage. We may lose but we scored a lot and we were always in the game. The fans loved it. We are boring now. No identify. Must establish an identity. Then recruit around that identity. Crazy fast receivers.........lots of touches.

4. Build a massive pass blocking offensive line. Error to the side of pass blocking. The running game will suffer but we will pass to the running backs for quick 3-5 yard gains outside.

5. A quarterback who can run for short yardage on 3rd and short. Doesn't have to be Cam but just can use their feet when needed. Again, Drew Brees.

6. Establish an identity that throws your opponents off. Something that they don't see every other week. Go for it on 4th down and short inside the 50 yard line. This actually is a new trend with spread offenses.

7. Now this can be built, Lots of coaches would love this approach. Probably won't beat OSU and Michigan often but would be a bowl team on a regular basis.

Call me crazy but this was the last time that Purdue was good.

I would love to get a Tom Herman, or Art Briles, but they may not want to come here and coach at Purdue. We went all out last coaching search, whiffed on Butch Jones and ended up with CDH2. We went out to get a great AD, but whiffed on Luck and got Bobinski. Now don't get me wrong, Bobinski may turn out to be good, but he's no super hero come to save Purdue Athletics.

Now, let me ask you: What would attract a big name coach to Purdue, if other programs were willing to shell out the same money to be their coach? Would you take $3 mil at Purdue, or $2.8 mil at Texas (insert P5 school here).

Your conceding the state to Indiana. The single worst program in all of FBS?

I have not read anywhere that we went after Luck. Link?
uhhhhh. Ooopps. That was a GBI special. I may, or may not, be banned soon. Sorry GBI.

But if you all were premie subscribers, you would all have known that about two months ago. So sign up!

Surely Purdue could get an assistant from Houston, tcu or some other high scoring school. Be nice to get an up and coming coach.

Forget Indiana? Cause of IU? When in the hell has that ever been said.

And we just need to find the next Drew Brees. Got it. Thank goodness no other teams would want the next Brees.

I get what you're trying to convey, but maybe should have been worded differently.

I do agree about being a passing/spread team. It's what made us successful under Tiller. And the way the college and pro games are going, plus it's easier to recruit for. Look at a team like Tulsa, the 2 years before Philip Montgomery, they were 3-9 and 2-10. He brings in the Art Briles system and they lead the nation in plays per game, we're top 20 in yards per game, scoring, passing yards. They improved to 6-7 last year and went to a bowl. Lost the Independence Bowl to Virginia Tech 55-52. That's the same VT team that beat us 51-24 earlier in the year.

Thanks for your great comments! Well if not the next brees we had others. Kyle Orton, Mark Hermann, Curtis Painter, Jim Everette, etc. just think that we are trying to look like every other team in the Big 10. Big line, run the ball, short passes. If I had the answer I would be king. But I don't.

Yes i do agree that there are plenty of great assistants who would love to coach in the SEC or Big10. The two most dominate conferences. You need to step outside of the Big 10 to see how hot the conference is right now. Many coaches want to come here and so do players.

Conceding the state to IU? I said Notre Dame and IU. You need to realize where great speed players are coming from now. Not Indiana. You have to look at High School football in a state to see what they are developing. Texas, MS, AL, FL, GA, are developing great spread offensive players.

We need a coach with an identity, on that note. Who can we hire at $3M. Its going to be an assistant who wants to come to the greatest league in the country. We will become better than the SEC. I believe it. Whisky 19-LSU 16.

We'd all love great QBs, but systems can improve average players hugely. Right now Drew Brees, Kyle Orton, etc aren't knocking down our door wanting to play in our offense. But a great system can change that and make kids want to play here. That's how Tiller kept producing QBs every year. Great systems also helps average recruits look better. Look at all the years of June Jones at Hawaii. Timmy Chang, Colt Brennan, Bryant Moniz were all average/below average QBs that were put into a system that made them look like video game characters. Plus it makes recruits want to come your school if you have a fun, uptempo offense that puts points on the board.

It's sad seeing the polar opposite directions a program like Oregon and us have gone. The 4 years prior to Chip Kelly coming to Oregon they were a cumulative 30-19. We were 29-21. We played them in Tiller's last year (2008) and Hope's first year as HC (2009). Those years were Chip's 2nd as OC (2008) and his first as a HC (2009). We lost the first game 32-26 and lost the second game 38-36. Since than we've plummeted to bottom dwellers and they've had 10+ wins every year except last year (9 wins). We were very similar programs. They found an identity, we found nothing.

Great speed players have typically not came from Indiana, but thats no reason to concede a state to IU. Will we out-recruiting ND? Probably never, but we can still get good football players from this state that don't go there. Alot of our great players have been instate guys. We definitely need to recruit other states (Texas especially), but I wouldn't give up on the talent here.

And I'm not sure how much we'd be willing to pay a new coach, but they can be brought in for $3M a year. Only 34 HC's make $3M or more a year. Chad Morris makes $2M at SMU. He's trying to rebuild a terrible program right now. Philip Montgomery, former Baylor OC, makes only $800,000 as HC at Tulsa. Kendal Briles, Baylor OC (who's probably ready to leave Baylor after this year) makes only $250,000. Bob Stitt (offensive genius), who's the HC at Montana only makes $175,000. Scott Frost, former OC at Oregon and now HC at UCF, makes $1.7M. Art Briles made $4.2M at Baylor. I think he'd take a million less to get back into coaching. There's plenty of options for us though.

All 3 stars or less. We may only get a few of those that we target each year, but those few may turn out to be difference makers. Can't abandon in-state recruiting.

I'll add Kawann Short and Roosevelt Colvin to the list. Chike Okeafor was instate, but he was a pretty highly ranked guy.

I think Pollard was a 4 star, though I could be wrong.
