George enrolling at end of semester - Boiler Up!

If George or any player enrolled at the beginning of the semester, could they travel andor participate in a bowl game after the fall semester concluded? Could they suit up for a New Years bowl game? Obviously it's never been done before. But with the new redshirt rules.... after all, he would be enrolled.

That is an interesting question? I don't think the Team would like that concept in displacing an existing D.E. while they worked all Summer/Fall for a player like George to come in and take a spot. It also would put the Coach on the spot for one game that is usually supposed to be a reward for the team's efforts not the individual. It would show how screwed up the new redshirt rule is though.

Probably could, but I don’t see any benefit

I'm not really talking about playing. But it might be a nice gesture to allow any recruit that enrolls early to travel with the team to a Bowl game.

He wouldn’t be eligible to play or be part of the team until the start of the second semester.

My thought exactly. Second semester starts on probably the 7th or 14th of January. The bowl game would/will be played way before that.

If I remember right, he was going to officially sign around December 19th at Canton, OH. Am I remembering that right? I know Canton is where the NFL HOF is, but is there something going on that weekend in Canton?

Like Moore last year, looking forward to see him suit up for us next year!

I agree. Since we would technically be under for the 2018 class, Purdue is allowed to count early enrollees from the 2019 class towards the 2018. I think we are at 24 right now but at least 3 enrolled early last year and if applied to 2017 we could essentially continue to rollover. I think right now we have 3 extra schollies and could get a 4th if someone graduates early in December (or late in the case of a 5th year senior), which we usually have a few. A long way of saying he probably would not take someone's scholarship.

Would that also mean that there is an extra slot for someone to get into the 2019 class?

Yes, if they apply his scholarship to 2018 which is permitted by the new rules. We can do up to 5 but I am not sure how many we "rolled over" from 2017. Even if we did not roll any over we have one opening since we only have 24 in that class (you can have up to 25) and we still have 3 open scholarships.

That is how you can have 30 true freshmen on your roster and get around the 25 rule. The downside to the new rule is inevitably schools will ask players to leave at the end of the fall semester to open up scholarships for spring enrollees.

I'm just glad he's coming! I sort of expected going to West Lafayette high, that he might dual enroll at Purdue and still participate in some of his high school spring activities like prom and graduation ceremonies. It would be the best of both worlds.
