Have been told from a good source that Garrison Brooks has a top four, which includes Purdue, Kansas, SMU and Iowa State. Questions will be around who will get the official visits from him as he only has two left dating back to his original commitment in the spring that had landed him at Mississippi State. Will update as I hear more.

yep, and PF's usually play up front, or along the front line... so to speak. We need big talented big guys next year so (1) we are not dependent on Taylor staying healthy, and (2) we have experienced players when VE and Haas graduate. To me, this is the biggest need for any remaining 2018 schollies.
I think we are on the same page

since we're targeting a bunch of guards for 2018, we need to target a big man to replace biggie for 2017. and Since has is not a shot blocker or a tremendous rebounder, we need somebody who can dominate defensively. Ondigo? Bbrooks? Tilmon? McCoy ?

We need somebody. I don't have much confidence in either Taylor Haarms or Trapp. being a defensive inside force. We can get by next year with Haas, and Edwards helping out. but we need somebody to learn next year to be ready to take over in 2018. Somebody not named Phinisee.

Thank you for sharing! I'll take your word for it.

Or he canceled the visit with UNC
I can see it..
"Hi coach. Congratulations on your temporary championship. Listen, I want to go to a real college, not a fake college. My high school grades are actually better than a 'C' and my IQ is more than 2 digits. Thanks for your interest, but my mom says I need to trade my skills for a real degree, one that will mean something later in life."

Funny thing is, his mom is the one that wants him to go to UNC

The whole thing is confusing. Dad coaches at Mississippi State, where he signed (arguably through pressure from father because he was never really interested.) His mother really wants him to go to UNC (where they signed Manley who is a very similar type player and skill level. Also will be backlogged at that position and highly recruited over). When he decomitted, everybody just assumed he would go to UNC for his mother. He got some other high major offers and Painter got in well enough to be listed in a top four (though the tweet was quickly deleted.) Brooks would be ideal. He is athletic and a rim protector. A true post player with the ability to guard a stretch five. Signing Brooks would keep Purdue in the 15-20 range and give them a shot at a sweet 16 again. Then the following year with further improvements from Wheeler, Easter, Carsen, and Brooks/Haarms Purdue would stay in that 15-20 range with expectations of sweet sixteen and competing for Big Ten championship. I remain optimistic, even if Biggie decides to leave. Painter has done a good job avoiding major misses (that actually affected anything. You could argue weatherford, but he redshirted and then left causing no impact whatsoever) for the last 3 classes. It remains to be seen with the 2017 class, but the ceiling is very high. Brooks likely sees the potential going forward and sees a chance to leave early (especially if Biggie leaves early). Biggie was in the national spotlight all year and accumulated a lot of awards.

So, the goal for Purdue now is to just be a Sweet 16 program and stay in the 15-20 range?
Not very high expectations, which has probably been the problem for a long time.

For a program with very little postseason success, going to the sweet 16 consistently and building off that is definitely what our aim should be.

Sure, getting to a final 4 and winning a title are the ultimate goal, and if you can get there, awesome, but let's have a dose of realism here.

Even with Brooks, I do not believe Purdue has the talent to win a national title. But going to consecutive sweet 16s and possibly consecutive B1G titles would be huge for this program and would get a lot of attention.

Use that to build and bring in more and better recruits and go from there. Build little by little.

I'm sure the staff and team have the "goal" to go to a final 4 every year. As fans, we can be a little more level with what we say, and being a ranked, sweet 16, and B1G champs is about the best we can hope for the next few years IMO.

Don't be a troll. Consistently getting to the sweet 16 gives you a chance to break through. South Carolina made it to a final four and was nowhere near realistically in the top 25. 15-20 and constantly make the sweet 16 would be a dream compare to where we have been. Purdue isn't likely to just jump to a constant final four team without baby steps. You want that, go cheer for Duke. You will fit in perfect wth their fan base.

Top 15 consistently out of 330 programs seems like high expectations to me. If we make the S16 virtually every year we will eventually break through. It's not a very tough concept to grasp.

I feel like next season will be Purdue's best chance to go deep into the NCAA Tournament until '19-'20 or '20-'21. It's uncertain whether the younger guys will be playing at such a level that they will be able to replace the losses of Haas, V. Edwards, Mathias, and Thompson (and possibly a grad transfer and/or Taylor, if he ended up being an early departure for some reason or another) with relative ease in '18-'19.

I really like a lot of the pieces, but it is important that Carsen makes the kind of improvement Yogi did between his freshman and sophomore years. If Carsen improves his shooting and decision making, Purdue is in great shape. Eastern is an elite player, the question is how will he fit? If he is defending a guard, he can create mismatches. I really like Wheeler. I think he is going to be more athletic and aggressive than Vince. The question is whether he can shoot at the same level. G Brooks would be the perfect get. Will have more of an impact than a Big in the '18 class and what he can do is so important. The baby Boilers figured it out quickly, but they also started out more talented. I think that even in the 2018 year, we should compete as a top team in the Big Ten and make the tournament. The question will be how well the new comers work into the system and if they are ready after just a year. Brooks might be the most important piece going forward. The 5 is the biggest question with the departure of Biggie and Haas. If Brooks makes an immediate impact like Haas and Biggie did, then the step back won't be huge. I remain optimistic and after the early misses, I feel very good about this class, especially if Painter lands Brooks.

That seems to be the ceiling with this regime.

Did you mean if a guard defended Eastern a mismatch may be possible? You typed if Eastern defended a guard a mismatch could develop...just trying to make sure I follow what you intended to say

Yes, I meant defense He uses his length to guard smaller people and has enough speed to not get burned. He naturally is on the passing lanes and being several inches taller he can block. Having a 6'6 guarding the 2 is a nightmare for other teams. He can switch on pick and roll and guard 1-4 without giving up much size or speed. I am very interested to see him develop on the defensive end. Offense is important, but defense lives here.

Offensively his size also makes him difficult, but they can switch who defends him if he is abusing them too much.

not seeing enough other than a couple of videos...I'm unsure about his quickness on a guard defensively. Offensively, his ball handling compensates some for his quickness. It really won't matter if a team switches on him because his skill set and size make him a match-up issue as an offensive player where he can go low or out high...and perhaps defensively as you suggest...I just haven't seen enough to know that...

Saw this. It is rather confusing. They signed Huffman and Manley who are both bigs. Manley is practically a carbon copy of Brooks. They are finally meeting with the NCAA for their cheating and likely have sanctions coming. They will also be recrioted over. It is really unfortunate for Manley, but confusing why he would pick UNC other than his mother pushing for it. Could have been showcased immediately at Purdue. It was, however speculated that he only decomitted from Mississippi State to go to UNC. He had us in his top four, but it didn't end up making a difference. Oh well.

I'm guessing they'll get a slap-on-the-wrist for their countless years of academic fraud, which involved keeping its high-revenue sports athletes (primarily men's basketball players) eligible. Meanwhile, UNC Asheville or a similar type of program better watch their back for severe sanctions if say, a coach paid for a parking ticket incurred by one of their players.
