From an outsider

Let's go back to last season's loss to Cincy in the tournament. I felt Painter's lack of coaching chops at the end of that game was the difference.

Now having turned today's game over with just a little time left in the game with Purdue holding a good lead, the collapse happened again.

This is back to back seasons that a good Purdue team collapsed in the final minutes of a tournament game. This team has three NBA big men too, what a shame.

Painter is looking mediocre from this outsider's vantage point. I applaud him for putting together such a talented team but to collapse in the first round with a loaded front screams mediocrity. This is easily Purdue's most devastating loss in decades.

I hadn't really thought about it until after this game, but why has Painter struggled so much with getting a decent point guard. On his best teams, you could argue the point guard is still the fifth best player on the starting five. Guards make teams go in March and I feel that might be the biggest issue. When you look at losing leads late, many times that is guard oriented. Not always, but it can be a big factor.

This isn't necessarily our most devastating loss in decades. We were seeded higher and a better team in 2011 and got killed by VCU. The 2012 Kansas loss was pretty devastating. We have actually choked at the end of our last three NCAA games, not two.

Painter is similar to his mentor, Gene. He can't win big tourney games and he can't recruit great point guards. He does a lot of things well, and we could do a lot worse, but his flaws hurt us.

Blowing a 14 point lead in the last 5 minutes (with multiple chances to extend it!!!) against a 12 seed when we had a team with a legit path to a final four, makes it easily the toughest loss for me since 1994, and maybe since 1988.

That is why I am hoping that c. Edwards will be a change at pg for this team. We really need a pg that can take over when needed.

This was the most devastating loss I have ever seen actually. Sure upsets happen and this or that. Purdue had a tremendous advantage though just towering over LR. And I like Painter, but it is time to put an end to this kind of result when you are making over 2 million a year. Though, I just cannot accept this to a team that is small and inferior by talent level. If LR can beat Purdue then Purdue should win a national title by that rule. It is one thing to not beat a team that is better, but because you lost after trying hard. It is another to be good enough to win the title and come in like that and get just ousted by a team you should manhandle. A coach has got to be able to call timeout and know the answer to what the other team is doing. A guy who is only 180 pounds for god's sakes and 6ft 1 generously went on a 31 point thrashing on Purdue today. How is that even possible? These guys are 7 ft, 7ft, 6ft9, 6ft8, and Painter can't stop a guy that averages 10-11 points a game who is 180 pounds 6ft1? I mean come on. Hammons did not deserve to go out like that. His teammates let him down big-time today.

Matt Painter gets us to the big dance, that should count for something. He is also very competitive in those games. I can't recall us getting blown out in any of his NCAA tourney endeavors. We were extremely competitive in this game as testament to the 2 OTs. For you to say that it's the toughest loss since '94, wow, that goes back a long way and a ton of NCAA appearances (another testament to how well Painter has done).....just look at the # of wins Matt has in the NCAA's and also big ten championships. He is here to stay for sure and I am just glad we were extremely competitive in the game today (now yesterday). Matt also has an excellent record against our arch rival Indiana and a good track record in the community.

Like I said in another post, painter is going no where. Heck Purdue won't fire hazel and he has done crap. Yes it sucks we lost but we are stuck with painter for now.
