West Lafayette, Ind.
MANSFIELD, Texas — So we'll just do a quick rundown here each night, and follow up with stories for the front page as we can, but ...

• Matt Painter was here in Dallas tonight, but is off to Atlanta tonight, to be replaced here tomorrow, I think, by assistant coach Steve Lutz. Brandon Brantley is in Atlanta for the Nike event and we think Elliot Bloom in his temporary recruiting appointment is in Kansas City for Under Armour.

There were three sets of games here tonight.

First, Painter may have just been biding his time when he sat and watched Marcus Smart's program's team, which has a couple forwards worth looking at in Andrew Laczkowski and Austin Lewis, and a big-time 2021 player in Harrison Ingram. Not sure that was a serious priority game, though.

Next game was a priority, as Kerwin Walton, Ben Carlson and Dawson Garcia played for D1 Minnesota. Painter stayed the whole game, never breaking off to check on Zach Loveday, which may tell you what you need to know there. I don't get the sense Purdue is really pushing with Loveday.

Carlson, back from an ankle injury, played very well, and Walton turned just two field goal attempts into six points, off a four-point play and a couple split pairs of free throws.

The crowd there, included Matt Painter, Marquette's head coach — it's too late at night to spell, I'm sorry — and assistants from Baylor, Notre Dame, Minnesota, Indiana, Northwestern, Xavier, Stanford, Iowa State and others.

Dawson Garcia was obviously part of the draw, as was blue-chip 2021 player Kendall Brown.

Garcia, who's very good and reminiscent of Derek Willis from years ago at the height of his stardom for lack of a better term as a prospect,

"I like Purdue a lot," Garcia said. "They say they could use my versatile game very well over there and they had a great season."

Garcia is a long shot for Purdue, truthfully.

He's made official visits to Marquette, Baylor and Texas and has schools like Ohio State and a bunch of others after him.

He says Purdue is a possibility for an official visit, but when asked specifically of that, he probably wasn't going to say it's not.

Anyway ...

Purdue didn't get up to Minneapolis to see Walton and Carlson for in-home visits prior to this weekend, but is scheduled to early this week, during the four-day window coaches have to visit players following the evaluation period, so that's notable.

• Purdue has indicated to Trey Galloway that it can, or will, take two guards in its 2020 class, to let him and his family know that it will continue to recruit him following Wednesday's commitment from Jaden Ivey.

Galloway played tonight in front of Painter, assistants from Notre Dame, Iowa, Indiana, Northwestern and others. Of course, he wasn't the only player on the floor being watched by those schools. Indiana is coming to see him Monday, he said.

Painter and Steve Lutz made an in-home visit Monday.

"Obviously they're very interested in me and they really want me," Galloway said, relaying his interpretation of Purdue's message to him. "They're making it seem like I'm a priority for them. They're texting me every day, calling me and showing love, and that means a lot to me. Coach Painter's been to see me a lot and that means a lot to me, seeing him there."

Galloway was solid tonight in Indiana Elite's win, up and down, but did some damage as a scorer around the basket, mainly.

(Sorry, I don't have stats. I thought they'd be available online, but that doesn't seem to be working.)

• One of Purdue's most important players to watch in the 2021 class, there's nothing to see this weekend, as Trey Kaufman is out with a wrist injury.

Painter did watch offered rising junior Khristian Lander tonight, though. He's Galloway's teammate on Indiana Elite's 17s team.

That's it for now. Full day tomorrow.
