MEQUON, Wis. - The NY2LA Summer Jam up here in the Milwaukee area hasn't turned out much Purdue fodder, here are a few snip-its.
• First of all, Zach Norvell is supposed to be back with Mac Irvin Fire Saturday after attending the Lawson-Oladipo Camp out east.
So barring anything unforeseen, we'll finally have something on him. Not sure we'll post it tomorrow, but we'll have something on the target from Chicago.
• The effort Purdue and Michigan put into watching Te'Jon Lucas today turned out to be a bust. He must have had a groin injury or something because he barely played in his team's one game.
Awful timing for him if he's hurt because he's this close to Big Ten offers. Don't know who will pop first, but seems like someone will.
• Spoke at length today with Purdue 2017 target Nojel Eastern for a feature on his recovery for Rivals.com national. He has nothing at all to say about recruiting at this point, just focused on his recovery.
Purdue can be a factor there, seems like. Brandon Brantley's done a nice job recruiting him and staying on top of him while he's been hurt and that's mattered to him. Mom likes Purdue from what we understand and Mom's crucial here. Purdue was the first offer, and that may matter long-term. But Eastern, assuming he returns to form, will be a very highly recruited player. Already is.
I'll say this: Eastern is a very intelligent, very thoughtful, very, um, genial kid and anyone who gets him is going to love him.
• Matt Painter was in Las Vegas today to see point guard target Carsen Edwards. Greg Gary was here in Milwaukee this morning for NY2LA, but took off in the afternoon to go somewhere else. Back to Chicago for the Nike Global Challenge.
• llinois 2018 big man Carteare Gordon is here now after being at the adidas event in New York. Purdue will be all over that one, them and everybody else. He came to elite camp last year. National prospect, easily.
• I love Illinois 2017 Christian Negron, just don't know what you do with him. Best position might be the 4, but he's 6-6. He has some guard skills, but probably not enough to be a guard. He's tough and rugged and well-equipped to play inside, just small for that role.
They say position-less basketball might be part of the future. Players like Negron are a good reason to go that route. It's just hard from a matchups perspective. But if you want toughness, this is your guy.
• Purdue watched an Australian kid today, a big 6-5 wing named Kieran Hayward. Don't know where things stand with him, but he can really shoot and seems like just a good basketball player. A big 2 or a skilled 3. Would love to be able to track him down tomorrow, but not sure I will be able to.
