INDIANAPOLIS - Spent today at the annual Best of the Midwest combine in Indy, an event that always has a pretty solid turnout of BCS-type prospects.
It's a challenge sometimes with Purdue to know this early who it's going to end up really being in on - or really wanting - in the long run, but there were some names worth following today.
Here are some quick notes, with full stories and some video to accompany them to come in the next few days also.
Ben Davis running back/athlete Chris Evans ran a 4.37 today in the 40. He is an offer guy for Purdue, but does not have an offer yet. I don't know why - and he seems surprised it hasn't come yet - but he seems like he would like one.
Purdue has recruited him very hard so far and like I said, he's an offer guy for them. Indiana and Cincinnati are among those who have offered so far.
Evans said he does expect to come to Purdue for one of its junior days.
He will be one of their top in-state targets in 2016 if I had to guess.
Evans is an interesting case, because he's being recruited for running back, slot and/or corner, but wouldn't seem like the prototype at any of them, but he can really, really run and has been wildly productive at the highest level of high school football in Indiana.
Hunter Johnson, considered widely to be the No. 1 QB in the 2017 class, continues to talk about how much he "loves" Purdue's coaching staff after he's visited so many times now I've lost count.
It seems genuine and not just lip service on the part of the Brownsburg QB.
Everyone wants him - other offers are Penn State, Tennessee, Kentucky and North Carolina and he's only just scratching the surface - but Purdue has some real early traction with him, it would seem.
Probably not a pre-camp offer guy at this point, but Purdue is actively recruiting Chatard center Danny Godlevske as just that: A center.
The physically developed 6-foot-3, 285-pounder has a Ball State offer and other mid-major interest, with Purdue being the Power Five program he hears most from, he said.
Godlevske was a linemate for the Trojans of Purdue offensive tackle signee Matt McCann.
Ohio wide receiver Terrance Landers is a big receiver who was really impressive today, I thought. He visited Purdue for a game this fall and said a Purdue offer would put them among his favorites.
Marc Givler will have a story on him for us to come.
(Marc's helping us out now, by the way.)
Purdue is communicating regularly with Ohio cornerback Jacob Long. He does not have any offers yet.
Hamilton Southeastern linebacker Collin Miller said Purdue has suggested to him he has a great chance for an offer, which would be a big one for him, seems like.
Miller is a big, physical outside sort of linebacker who looks like a 20-year-old already. Defensive end might be a possibility, too.
He visited Purdue multiple times during the season.
Again, stories to come in the next few days
