Helmets shorts and cletes, so not full contact. Threw tons of passes and 75% of them were deep passes.

QB's - as expected - Elijah - Jack - Aidan

Receivers - excellent competition here! Many that could vie for time on the field including
---------------------------------------------------------------

#4 - able to break free several times
Milton Wright - many nice catches
TJ Sheffield -
Mershawn Rice -
Ahmad Anderson - excellent deep contested catch
Jared Sparks - a %$^&*)# drop at one point, later tweaked an ankle - I think
Jordan Bonner -
Kory Taylor - he must impress a coach or two - tall but seems slow to me
Jackson - great hands, throw it close and he grabs it! Not sure about his speed however

David Bell was in street clothes, but did a tiny bit of running with a trainer at the end of practice
---------------------------------------------------------------

Some nice catches when one considers that it looks like the coaches tell the DB's to go after them, legally and illegally. One defender clearly held #4, preventing a deep reception. The entire defensive backfield celebrated, at the same time I was throwing a flag up in the stands. The only official in the Big who wouldn't have thrown the flag was one of the officials that we had for the NW game last year!

Running Backs - in no particular order. Also, hard to tell anything in this kind of scrimmage
---------------------------------------------------------------

Zander -
Tario -
King -
Alfred -
De'Joun

Richie Worship - no show - didn't even see him in street clothes.

OL
---------------------------------------------------------------
Hard to tell in this type of practice, but when I see the 2nd string, I'm hopeful that nobody gets hurt!

DL
---------------------------------------------------------------
Hard to tell in this type of practice.

Steven Faucheux looks huge (and he's only a freshman) !

Lorenzo was a no show, not in street clothes either (TK says he was there earlier in practice, but I looked for him throughout practice and NEVER saw him)

LB's and DB's
-------------------------------------------------
Hard to tell in this type of practice, looks like, barring injuries, we're really good in this area.

We definitely have some taller DB's than we're used to!

Dedrick and Kenneth looked pretty good for the most part.
Trice made a nice breakup or interception, can't remember which.

-Hopkins looks like he's gonna be a huge factor
-Markus - ditto
-JD hit a couple from 45 at the end of practice
-Barnes smelled out a jet sweep to #4 and blew it up!
-George might give us the pass rush that we NEED!

Keep in mind, there are over 100 players on the field, and it's hard to stand out. Also, even though I have a photographic memory, I've been out of film for about 5 years.

Thanks for posting the information. Great to have someone there in person to give us the details.

I was concerned to see that you said David Bell was in street clothes. Did anyone say why he was in street clothes? I had not read anything or heard anything that had mentioned David being hurt. Maybe these are unreal expectations, but I think a lot (maybe not all) are expecting him to be the starting outside WR for game one at Nevada.

Heard Miller looked good at TE in the “ young guys” practice. Most of the Freshman and some RS Freshman stay and practice by themselves for about 30-45 minutes. Heard he looked good then.

Here are our announced captains for this year. Not really any big surprises. I thought with all his attention that Rondale might be a captain, even though he is only a sophomore. It will come next year for sure.

Purdue’s 2019 captains are Grant Hermanns, Brycen Hopkins and Elijah Sindelar on offense. On defense, they are Lorenzo Neal, Markus Bailey and Navon Mosley.

On a contested route, midway through practice.

You're talking about Sparks here - question was about Bell. Sparks appeared to have an issue midway through practice. Bell was out to begin practice, supposedly a minor hamstring strain and Brohm hopes to get him back within a week or so.

Thank you for this report. Very helpful.

So it appears that Mosley will start at FS since he is a captain

Well he's the most veteran player in the secondary, so I think it's probably that more than anything. I can't imagine Brohm locking him into the starting role simply because he's a captain. Maybe in the beginning yeah, but if Grant/Graham/Trice/Ball outplay him....

Kory Taylor - he must impress a coach or two - tall but seems slow to me

Went to practice on Friday. Wanted to clear up something about Kory and his practice today. He made 5 EXCELLENT receptions (among the 10-15 catches that he made) during 7 on 7 and 11 on 11.

Two of the passes would have gone for TD's if he had wanted to. Two of the passes were against Dedrick (a starting CB), and he beat him without much of a tussle (one for a TD). He caught another one in traffic (amidst several starting LB's), and was wide open for a 20 yarder over the middle.

He must be sneaky fast, cause I don't see how he gets open, but he did several times (and not against the 2's or 3's).

Hats off to him, cause he looked like an all-Big10 today!

Seems like he is getting more comfortable in the offense.

Not having slo-mo, I never could see the catch, and even if I had it, I doubt that I could. He should be one of the more intriguing receiver possibilities. But it's not receivers that I'm concerned with.

That is a good question. How are our RBs doing? I know Worship is out. Hewitt was said to be out today, but how are Tario and King doing?

It's hard to tell when they're not live tackling, as it's basically touch football. From the looks standpoint, Alfred Armour and Dorue look like absolute wrecking balls! It remains to be seen as to how that translates to actuall game production, however, if the O line can get a decent push, I certainly think they'll keep the defense honest.

For Sparks, is it the same ankle as 2 years ago. Not sure if that was the left or right, but it would be a shame if it's the same ankle that's been bothering him.

Nice pass by Sindelar. Not the best view, but it seems like he dropped in their perfectly.
Could not see everything that developed during that play, but you could tell that Sindelar's pass had a very tight spiral and he threw that with some velocity.
