I was watching the Iowa State vs Baylor game. I put ISU on about the same level as Purdue. But their stadium was packed. Got me to thinking how different things would be if there were only two big in state universities. Granted we are cheered against like there is only 2 bc IU and ND fans will team up none stop. But was wondering how much everything would be different in ftball and basketball if it was just Purdue and IU or PU and ND in the state.

Also, ISU has a brand new coach who doesn't have his head up his arse. That helps.

I agree, lets start a petition to kick IU and Butler out of the state of Indiana. We can move them somewhere in Northwest? Wyoming, one of the Dakotas? Idaho possibly would take a program like IU or Butler?

I lived in Iowa for 5 years. My take while living there was that not having any professional sports made a difference. People tended to be more in tune with college sports and of course U of I and ISU being the largest got the most attention. Media coverage also was more focused on the college teams because they didn't get divided by any pro coverage.

Obviously there are other factors like success of a program or a new coach as someone mentioned. I grew up in Indiana and then moved to Iowa for 5 years, then Illinois for 9 and just recently came back to Indiana. There was a difference in Iowa compared to the other two states when it came to college sports. JMO

I was just over at Notre Dame and got into a discussion about the reversible jacket crowd. Most ND fans find the IU support weird and cloying. It was like "Dude, cheer for your own school. You're not a Notre Dame fan.". They think the IU supporter of ND are kind of like the little brother that tries to participate, but always says the wrong things, or jumps up at inappropriate times in the game. You know, face plant time for the ND fellows.

.

That's because IU was so irrelevant in football for so many years, while Purdue was putting a beating on them for so many years in football, and splitting in basketball, that they got so sick of our total program success, they decided to be huge ND fans, primarily because of the SHILLELAGH rivalry that obviously ND dominated. It gave them a sense of accomplishment that arguably the most historic football program ever beat their most hated rival, Purdue. Most ND fans don't care about IU at all, because they don't need that sense of accomplishment from another school, because they are good at what they do. IU isn't, although their football program is on the rise and better than ours now, which doesn't say much.

Think we would have a national championship if it was just Purdue and IU in the state? Think about how much bigger our fan base would be. Also how many more in state recruits wouldn't constantly hear shit talk about Purdue. Many more would grow up as Purdue fans too. Besides California Texas Florida, Indiana is one of the only states with 3 major universities(not including butler which would make 4).

And we should count Butler. They are much more relevant than us over the past 10-15 years in the NCAA as evidenced by their continuing success on the floor against us (and everyone else) and in recruiting.
