If I understand it correctly, Plummer now has 4 years left, AOC 3 and Burton 3.

But does the ruling mean that Alaimo will have 5 years left after he redshirts this season?

Or, might he have to take a snap in four games this year to qualify for the extra year, after which he can redshirt in 2021 and then have 4 years of eligibility left?

Great Post!

This is a question the NCAA needs to get on top of ASAP so the kids/teams/recruits have some guidance on how things will go from here on out.

It certainly has to be figured out before early signing day. Because there could be a lot of late flips by recruits who thought they were coming into a different situation on their teams RE: the number of players stacked up in their position group.

I doubt that the NCAA is capable of answering this question, so we will probably have to answer it for them on this forum and let them know.

No. Plummer was a true freshman in 2018 who did not play so he redshirted. Last year 2019 he played as a redshirt freshman. Then, this 8 game season doesn’t count ( from what I Understand). So this was supposed to be his redshirt sophomore season. Now that will be next year 2021. Then he will have 2 more after next fall.

2018 True Freshman
2019 RS Freshman
2020 Does not count
2021 RS Sophomore
2022 RS Junior
2023 5th year Senior.

the question is for these guys is do they wanna hang around an extra year. They will already have the degree and many already have a masters. Then what?

Here are the recommendations, which were adopted on 8/21/2020: LINK

Members also recommended the board give all fall sport student-athletes both an additional year of eligibility and an additional year in which to complete it ...

Meaning, instead of 5 years to play 4, they now have 6 years to play 5. This season does not count against their 4 years of eligibility, even if they play 9+ games. Wow.

Additionally:

The financial aid of fall sport senior student-athletes who take advantage of the additional year of eligibility and extended clock should not count against team limits in 2021-22.

To my interpretation, this means there will be two recruiting classes with "Senior" eligibility on every roster. There absolutely will be a "glut" of scholarship players on campus in the fall of 2021, which will make for a VERY interesting transfer portal.

It looks like the mid-majors could stand to receive a substantial influx of talent.

No? You mean yes, Plummer has 4 years left counting this year.

Still unclear about how it works for Alaimo or other newcomers who would normally redshirt.

No. This year does not count. Pretend it’s not happening. He has 3 more years of eligibility. 2021 RS Soph. 2022 RS Jr 2023 5th year Senior. He gets 6 years to play 4 not counting this 8 game deal.

This is why so many guys in the 2021 class are going to end up at lower levels that have no business being there. Purdue is going to hope guys play a 6th year and stick around rather than taking a guy as a 2021 because the immediate ability of those older guys out weighs a 2021 guy who needs time to develop. They'll go on to that for the 2022 and 2023 guys who they can focus on now.

A kid at Harrison by the name of Omarion Dixon should be getting looks as a mid-level D1 LB...but he is being really overlooked and will likely end up at a lower level MAC school rather than seeing his options build through the season to some where like NIU, WMU, or even Purdue/IU as a last chance flyer.
