Expectations

As usual, too much was expected too early from this team.

This, IS, Purdue Athletics. I say this with a sense of sarcasm and satire. Purdue Athletics just does not have the ability to be elite or top in the current "meta" (video game term) of college sports.

Sit back, enjoy the next 4 months and if we don't make the tournament, do your best to cheer at your TV like you would if we do.

At the end of the day, all of us typing and reading will have almost no effect on the state of this team.

Maybe the team got burned out from playing overseas, and a few loses will get that fire going again.

I'm hoping this. This team is way too talented, deep, and well coached to be playing like this. They need a fire lit under their ass. Maybe start the youngsters for the next couple of games

At this point my expectations are NIT. I see big ten getting 5 teams maybe 6 in. Those will be Minny, MSU, PSU, Maryland, possibly one or two of Iowa,OSU,Wisconsin,Mich. I don't even think fans should speak of NCAA after tonight. I can say if I was coach I'd pull red shirts of anyone that can add athleticism and put younger players on floor a lot more. Need to get our new center, Carson, and the rest of the young players as much playing time as possible together out there. Seniors had their chance. Zero leadership out there tonight. Put in freshman and let's look to hopefully better things to come in the future.

Except they are not that deep...they are not that talented on the whole...and they are not well-coached.

This is not a case of needing a fire lit...there are four starters that have played extensive minutes for four years, and the fifth played a ton a year ago and has as much raw athletic ability as anyone. They had the tremendous advantage of getting to play in the WUG, and, to date, it was all for nothing in that they have totally failed to capitalize on that opportunity. The true "talent" on/of this team is limited, and, that has been fully on display the past two games (and will be again a week from now when they host Louisville and several other times yet this year). And, the coaching is not stellar...there is no answer at all for what ails this team, be it recruiting or strategy...and, it is as simple as this...as long as Painter is the Head Coach, Purdue will never win when it matters most. That does not mean that he is a bad coach, he is just very limited...the guy has a great basketball mind, he simply can't land the talent necessary to succeed on a national scale, and, he limits himself with his stubborn refusal to change.

This season will play out like so many before it...and, like so many that will follow.

Problem with Painter is he didn't follow-up Swan with another 5-star. State of Indiana has a lot of talent. Look at Purdue's lineup. We got lineups out there with 3 of 5 guys undersized bigtime. If they're missing shots other team is getting rebounds and yet the other team can miss shots and still get their rebound 70 percent of the time. That equation simply will not work. Look at Duke and Kansas, teams like that. At least get the pieces. Duke doesn't ever have 3 undersized players out there at one time. Ever..... What Duke does works. It speaks for itself. A good coach looks and studies a team like that and should recruit accordingly. Adopt the winning philiosophy.

This is state of Purdue basketball for last 20 years...

We likely make NCAA this year . Lose in first weekend. We are sort of surprised/disappointed. Repeat for next 20 years.

We then Point back to some time in the 70's when we were good and try to explain we have "history" via Mount, Keady and Wooden. Ancient history.

In the grand scheme of things we are average. Not bad. Not good. We will get a "biggie" every decade. The other nine years we will have some over achievers "who are true boilers"....but...to think we have a path to become a powerhouse. I don't see it.

To me this tournament. Disappointing. But looking at it in the broad view of Purdue basketball and athletics. Is anyone really surprised?

Let’s keep the FBI and NCAA investigations in mind... those might cast everything in a different light by next spring...

Expectations: Make the NCAA tournament and be happy you made it. Very disappointed from the last two days to say the least. After the way we lost to Tennessee, I was actually not too surprised we lost to WKU. Although those are two loses we never should have had. Let's hope we can win the bucket Saturday and Brohm doesn't change jobs! Hard to believe football is our bright spot now.

Swanigan is the exception to the rule right now at Purdue. You can’t blame Painter for not repeating the very unique situation that was Swanigan/Barnes. But even if you could, I don’t think it’s fair to judge recruiting momentum over a 2-yr (2 data point) period. Two is not a trend. The success with Swanigan could easily lead to being in better recruiting position for younger guys that have not yet committed yet. TJD for example. Just because the year after Swanigan left didn’t yield better recruiting doesn’t mean it can’t/won’t happen.
