Eastern

We talk about this season and next season being excellent opportunities to make deep NCAA runs

But 2019 won't be too shabby - we should at least make the NCAA tournament. The guard play will be excellent with plenty of returning minutes in Carsen, Eastern, Cline plus whatever we get from the front court of Taylor, Haarms, Ewing.

Epperson is still uncommitted, right?

how much does he weigh now? last i read was 210, so I wouldn't count on him being an immediate replacement for Swanigan

We aren't on Epperson's visit list and I don't think we are in his top four. I would love to see us go get Robert Phinisee. I would love to run a three guard look. Harms can shoot and Wheeler looks like he would be a very promising wing. Keep the offense spread out and flowing. Add another big man with skill and we could be scary good going forward. I will be very dissapointed to miss out on Phinisee because he is right in our back yard and he is an athletic guard and that can do it all. He should be our top target. I was incredibly excited about Boogie and so far he has really lived up to the hype. Having a very good freshman year and he is just really fun to watch. Losing Biggie will hurt but we should still compete for a run in the Big Ten and should be an NCAA lock provided we don't get the injury bug. Maybe we can add a fifth year transfer big man to help the void, because I see Epperson as a long shot. Anyway, Boiler Up! Future should be bright.

Phinisee is in the 2018 class, not 2017.

We could see a starting lineup of Eastern, CE, Wheeler, Haarms, Taylor. If Taylor can get healthy I'm extremely excited to see this a couple years from now.

I'm pretty sure by 2019 the only big we can count on is Haarms. Taylor's uncertainty goes without saying and I believe Ewing will have used up his eligibility. We need Epperson or Painter needs to land 1 or 2 "ready to play" bigs in 2018.

I'm not sold on Epperson. I'd rather see the coaches go the transfer route to get a quality big/frontcourt difference-maker for next season.

Ewing has 2 years, starting this fall, so he will be on the 2018-19 squad. If you meant the 2019-20 roster, then no he won't be.

Here is a new highlight mix from Eastern. Love the thought of having a big strong guard to play alongside CE going forward. Think Painter got another good one here.

It's also amazing to me how well he finishes with his off shooting hand. Sometimes 8 feet away from the basket.

Yes! Nojels use of either hand in shooting and driving, is IMPRESSIVE

Is Ewing a candidate for a redshirt?

If Taylor is healthy, then we have Haas/VE/Haarms/Taylor at the 4 and 5....not a lot of minutes left for Ewing.

I have seen it somewhere Ewing might play the 3....but even then PJ/CE/DM/Eastern/Cline will take up virtually all the minutes

Redshirting Sasha, Wheeler AND Ewing seems excessive though

If Swanigan leaves as expected, I can't see Ewing redshirting.

Exactly. At this point the coaches can't count on Taylor to stay healthy and Haarms will still probably need another year to gain strength before he becomes more of a factor.

Ewing will have opportunity to play a lot of minutes. The only way he redshirts is if Swanigan comes back or Purdue gets a really good 5th year transfer.

A few things to consider Aaron Wheeler has grown to 6'9 as per Aaron Wheeler he also is close to 200 lbs . He plays the 4 now his arms are B1G ready in the last game I watched he had 5 blocks and 9 rebounds they won by 40 he played maybe half of the game . He is long and athletic and can jump out of the gym . The most impressive part of his game comes off of rebounds if he gets an offensive rebound its going back up quickly on the defensive rebound kid is going the length of the court in a flash . Compares to Tyler Cook of Iowa or Reggie Lynch of Minnesota although he is slightly less talented but more athletic . He could play the 3, 4, or 5 for us .

Eden Ewing he will play the 4 he is not a 5 he is a good solid player who won't hurt you . IMO he will play for us but unlikely to be a starter .

My 2018 starting 5 with the current roster Eastern, Cline, Edwards, Wheeler, and Taylor . We will be long and athletic .

I recently talked to Phinisee's hs coach a long time personal friend of mine he said Rob has not expressed a favorite . In his opinion it will come down to where he feels comfortable . Coach Peckinpaugh said he gets calls from teams inquiring about Rob endlessly he tells them all that Rob is open to the entire recruiting process . I have watched him play several times this year kid is legit he is going to play wherever he goes . I like our chances with him there is no doubt that he is a Purdue fan always has been .

IMO the next 5 we sign will be Isaac's buddy 7'2 Adam Trapp from Esko Mn. 2018 class he is as close to a lock as any recruit I have tracked since entire 2012 class .

Appreciate teh comments. Trapp seems like a farily agile 7'2" similar to Haams. No doubt will get his body molded more later which will be a huge help to him. Hard to imagine two 7'2" players that can move a bit...one developed outside somewhat and the other ...not enough video, but both 7'2" with plenty of length. Like that Trapp is a leftie as well...are you able to share why you think Trapp picks teh Boilers?

If someone red shirts I would guess it's Sasha. Shooting guard is loaded next season and he could use some strength. The other two look physically ready to go.

We are his best offer he and Isaac talk often as well as Brantley . His high school coach refers to the Purdue big's as to what he needs to do to play now and in the future . Just a ton of Isaac stuff from him and around him . I can't remember where I read it but another source said something to the effect his recruiting slowed to a crawl once Purdue offered inferring he was a lock . I believe his HS team will compete at Purdue over the summer as well . Just a bunch of stuff alone doesn't mean as much as when you put it together .

Yes, when someone references the 2019 season I assume that is the start of the season. Doesn't change the fact that we need additional and immediate impact frontcourt help in 2018 and 2019.

He looks like the best big we are pursuing currently so it'e good to hear he may be a Boiler lean. Do you think he can give us some minutes as a frosh?

Good to see OB52 contributing again. Hope you are doing well, sir.

If we are counting on Taylor being in the starting 5 in 2018 then I'm officially worried. There is nothing to suggest that he will be able to play or stay able to play. We better have better options than that. I have nothing against him and hope he gets his degree from PU and has a great life, but counting on him for anything substantial on the court would be a huge mistake.

Love the inside information. Hope you are right on all fronts. The future is looking good for Purdue Hoops.

and only CE is the shooter in that line-up. So we are back to the Johnson eras. How did that work for us?

Haarms and Taylor have both shown they have decent range. I don't know how well Wheeler shoots but Eastern may be serviceable. Taylor has the skill to play he just can't stay healthy. Were he playing this year we would see a substantial improvement in our team defense because he is the only natural shot blocker on the team. He would take a lot of pressure off our guards like Hammons did the past 4 years. We don't have an answer for big men who play away from the basket because Taylor is out.

Imo he needs to raise his energy level and endurance he's 2 years away hard to say . If he were a 2017 it would be doubtful ..

Isn't Haarms a guy that likes to roam the perimeter (i.e. a prototypical Euro big man)? I think over time, he could learn to guard out there with some effectiveness.

I'm torn on Robert Phinisee. I'd like to see him at Purdue simply because he's a local kid that is a DI scholarship-worthy talent but on the other hand, he's another very small guard. Purdue has had (or still has) more than enough of those in recent years.
