Early impressions of other B10 teams

I wanted to know if anyone has seen any exhibitions from other b10 teams and what their thoughts were.

I watched MSU the other night and I was really impressed. Deyonta Davis is stick thin and very raw offensively but he's going to block a lot of shots this year if he's allowed to play someone close to the basket. Bryn Forbes shot the lights out and looks a little bigger than last year so he may be more than just a spot up shooter. Denzel put up a triple double and hit open jumpers like he's going to do all season. Eron Harris, their transfer from West Virginia, didn't have a great game but he's a volume scorer and I think he's going to be pretty deadly going against second units if that's how Izzo wants to use him. Neubert said he doesn't know if they're going to have the same toughness as in years past but if one exhibition is any indication I don't think that's gonna be much of a concern for them. They really seemed to have a lot of energy and get up for it. Team looks every bit as good as their ranking early.

I watched a little of Minnesota too but I don't have much to say there. Don't think they're gonna make a ton of noise this year. I know some people watched Indiana the other night, any impressions? Anyone watched anyone else and have any early impressions?

Deyonta weighs 240. A lot of it is in his legs. As a comparison, Payne weighed 215 as a freshman.
I thought Javon Bess stood out as well. Most highly regarded freshman last year. Ended up sitting out pretty much the whole year with a foot injury. Had 11 and 9 rebounds.
Remember as well, Marvin Clark will be out another couple weeks with an injury. He was slated to start. He may or may not be able to reclaim that position from Bess.

I watched IU. They are talented, but didn't play with a great deal of discipline.

Whatever injuries were hampering JBJ don't seem to be an issue now. He's outstanding.

The freshman, Bryant, has crazy long arms. He will eventually be very good, but I'm not convinced that he will be great this season. He was so much bigger than anyone else on the court that it was hard to tell how he will do against Big Ten competition.

Williams is a human highlight real. He probably is the best athlete in the Big Ten. On the other hand, he seemed undisciplined and I didn't see anything to make me believe that his shooting will be much different.

Yogi was very good, but we all knew that.

I think that depth is a concern for IU. They really struggled when they went to the bench in several occasions.

Overall, I have to see IU against better competition to have a sense of how good they'll be this season. They certainly have outstanding talent in their starting 5, but they seemed to play down to the competition for much of the game.

I'm always trying to get a feel for how IU fans feel about Yogis game. I haven't seen a ton of iu over the past couple seasons but I've seen a fair amount and my impression of Yogi is he dribbles too much and jacks up bad shots that sometimes go in. Any iu fans reading this do you feel the same way or have I just not seen a big enough sample size? I'm very interested to see what Bryant can do for them since a decent 5 was probably the only key piece missing from a real contender.

I want to see how JBJ and Troy have developed as well. I've seen Troy do some pretty incredible things but I've also seen him make a lot of momentum changing mistakes as well. There was a point last year where he was projected to get drafted in the middle of the first round and then fell off the board completely. I believe he had a pretty good percentage from three last year but just didn't shoot it a ton, leading me to believe he only took open shots. If he can develop that part of his game and clean up the mistakes he'll be a tough match up for any team.

Yogi has dribbled too much without getting anywhere in the past and he has admitted it. A lot of the jacking up bad shots were due to having to bail out a stalled offense up against the shot clock. They're going to play him off the ball a lot more this year, so he can simply worry about catching and shooting, which gives more time to groom Johnson for the PG role next year.
