He's a (redshirt?) junior forward at UNLV (he's listed as 6'8, 215) that will not play during the fall semester (technically not a member of their program anymore) and is set to graduate in December. Assuming that he could play somewhere else immediately, he is capable of helping Purdue with rebounding, among other things. There's still an open a scholly, so this wouldn't at all affect the 2018 class. What do some of you think of this possibility?

Note: I'm using my phone instead of my PC to post, due to some health issues (nerve pain in neck & shoulders among symptoms; think it's related to cancer I was diagnosed with early last year), so it's more difficult for me to do things like find player stats and things of that nature.

it looks like if he graduates in December, he'd only be able to play the Spring if he's using the open 2017 scholarship. Admitted, that would be technically legal, but I'd hate to bring in somebody in the middle of a year and the n try to incorporate them into our line-up. And I'm not sure I'd want to give away one of our 2018 scholarships to him yet.

We essentially did that with haarms last year except we classified the year as a redshirt year.

I guess it's possible, but not it's a road I'd want to go down. unless he's really good, and we really need that extra body for next Spring. it seems a shame we didn't fill that 2017 scholarship with a transfer. looks like by now, we'll just save it or give it to a walk on. the time to fill that scholarship was a month ago, not this upcoming December.

If he could come now and practice with the team in the fall semester, I would at least think about it. If he shows up in Jan - no way

as I look at your comments, you say he won't graduate before December. if so, he would not qualify as a graduate transfer until he graduates.

Now, not being with the team, he would qualify as a regular transfer, but wouldn't he still have to sit out a year?

it sure doesn't look like he'd be able to play immediately until January..

If he were eligible in January is what I'm saying. Wolegib, he wouldn't be taking away a 2018 scholarship because he would be in his final season of eligibility from January onward.

that's what I thought you were saying. Would he 1/2 year starting in January? or as a grad transfer, would he have 1 1/2 years? I think brohm found some grad transfers who had 2 years, like the WR from ND.

I'd hate to bring him in for only 1/2 year .

If he is immediately eligible to play in January and chooses another school to finish his college career, I believe he would have "a half" season of eligibility remaining.

this is why I ask. A couple of football players who are grad transfers ended up being able to have 2 years because they red shirted one year. I'd be ok with a guy coming in January if he had another year, but coming to Purdue after he graduates and only playing for us one semester is kind of non-productive for us and him.

I'll use Ewing as an example. He was rated "by Some" as the #1 Juco power forward last year. He arrived late, but still about 2 weeks before our WUG games. He did not learn Painter's defense, and was not a playing factor for the games. it takes a newcomer more than a month to learn Painter's schemes and become a productive part of our team.

I've never known UNLV to be a defensive minded team. if he were to graduate in December, it may take him all of January to learn Painter's defensive schemes and become a useful player. it seems kind of dumb to give a guy a scholarship or even add him to the team if he's only going to play 1 month. I hate to ask, but .....Does UNLV play zone or man-to-man defense?

He would be playing for more than a month if this scenario played itself out (January through March). If it helped the team to have him, there's no reason it would be considered "dumb".

what I'm saying is he may be on the team , but it may take him his entire first month before he learns Painter's defensive schemes and he may only play limited minutes in blow -out games in January if at all. . I can't see Painter giving him significant mins to learn during the BIG 10 conference regular season. And in tourney time, I see Painter going with his seniors. I was sort of disappointed Spike played limited minutes down the stretch last year. Spike was healthy towards the end of the year, but became sort of an afterthought.

And I'm saying this in general for any player. I just can't see painter taking in any player for just one second semester even if he had a scholarship to give.

I think some players can pick defensive schemes quicker than others. Ewing and Wheeler have 0 years of experience playing DI ball. Morgan has 3.

Here are some of his stats:

Per this article it sounds like he hopes to play the 2018-19 season pending the NCAA granting him a medical hardship for the 2016-17 season, during which he only played in 9 games due to injury:

Article also mentions he was dropped from the UNLV team due to an altercation with a cab driver, but UNLV is allowing him to complete his degree.

I see very little chance that he ends up transferring to Purdue. Has there been any indication of interest by either party?

1. Hope you get better Nagem.
2. Of all the players you have located as possible guys Purdue should look @, which is quite an extensive list over the years (good job BTW as I enjoy reading about them), have any of them actually ended up @ Purdue. If so, do you remember who?

Nope. I'd like to think we're beyond the "hired gun to save us" era with the program.

I don't think there is every a time you simply start looking away from transfers if you are able to take one. If a kid can come in and provide something the team needs...you take them.
I agree with this, but transfers are now recruited about as hard and often harder than 4 year players. Grad transfers, in particular, are always in high demand. Starting a thread about transfers with no indication of Purdue interest is not much different than starting threads about high school players with no Purdue interest.

Nemanja Calasan, after he decommitted from Utah when Ray Giacoletti was fired. That's the first player I can think of right now.

Anyone hear the news that the NCAA is discussing waiving the clause to force players to sit a year after transferring (except current grad transfers)? Simply a horrible idea considering lower level teams will lost their players and players would simply shuffle from team to team based solely on playing time. If you thought the transfer rate was bad before, this would be insane.

"free agency" recruiting....what could go wrong?

Actually I've long advocated the first transfer should be free from the mandatory redshirt. But only the first one. After that player should lose a year f eligibility.

DG, I've ridden Ducati's for years....and have recently began doing business in Louisville with Commonwealth Motorsports. The owner is/was a rocket scientist and builds some great bikes.
I'm not a overly knowledgeable motorcycle guy but I have always liked Ducati's. They seem like a modern high tech version of a cafe racer but with lots of power.
