Without seeing much of him, I'm expecting our newest commit to be like Dakota. Is this accurate?

I wouldn't expect him to be as good as Dakota based on what I've read and how Dakota's developed but who knows.

If he wants PT, he better be.

With the guys Painter is bringing in - all good players with promise....some will have the combination of talent & work ethic to be like DM, some others have the combination of talent and work ethic and end up like Smotherman.....both good players with promise, but one rose and one fell. Happens that way. If these players coming in want PT they will have to work hard to get it, because that is Painter's way.

Sounds good but the reality is that we haven't always had a roster full of guys that had a strong work ethic and there's no guarantee we always will. I think now that Smotherman is gone we have a roster full of them. The junior class has been extraordinary and then you have Caleb following them up. I haven't heard as much about Cline to this point but it looks like he could be the proverbial gym rat to me and I think Carsen is picking up from everyone else.

I felt like the biggest fallout from the Baby Boiler era was that the players we brought in behind them seemed to coast rather than improve and get better. I'm not saying they never worked on their games but it doesn't seem like that most of them put the time in like we see Caleb or Dakota doing in the offseason. I think the legacy left behind by this junior class and Caleb will be similar but will the next crop of players pick up and work as hard? I hope so but we'll see.

There's only one Midwestern Cowboy. Many of us are enjoying watching his development and Dakich's stumping for DPOY. Looking forward to seeing him play a key role down the stretch and having a great senior season.

With that aside, I'm also looking forward to Sasha Stefanovich blaze his own trail for the Boilers....looks like he'll be a good player and a great fit with the chance to develop further. I can see where there might be some similarities to his game.

Only so much PT. With a solid 6 guys coming back, the 5 new guys (Haarms, Wheeler, Sasha, Eastern & even including Taylor) will have to fight and scrap hard to get minutes. Competition at all positions. Sure there is opportunity with loss of CS & Spike, but due to the number of players fighting to get it, I think the competition that will ensue, surely ensures the work ethic needed for at least one more year.

What I would LOVE to see is the combo of talent and work ethic of one of the "new" 5 end up be so good --- that we have a new starter. With Carsen that was the case....and that helped the Boilers be even better this year. Hope Painter finds another starter in these 5 as that will make the Boilers even better next year, than what some think they might be. Not likely, I know, but did not think it was likely Carsen started this year before the season started.

Sasha = Redshirt

I said in other posts that our starting lineup will be Haas, VE, Eastern, Mathias, and PJT/CE. If Eastern doesn’t impress quickly, it will be Haas, VE, Mathias, CE, and PJT. Either way, I don’t see many minutes for the other guys. Taylor must prove that the injuries did not seriously hamper his development. Cline must improve his defense to play more. Haarms needs to bulk up more. Eastern and Ewing has not played in the B1G yet. I have not seen any indication that neither Wheeler nor Sasha will be an immediate impact.

In short, I just don't see Sasha getting enough minutes on court to prove or disprove his potential any time soon.

I'm not buying the "no minutes" argument. The style of D we play coupled with our current more aggressive offense creates minutes to allow fresh legs for the key players at the end of the game. He'll get 10-12 minutes a game unless he's really not prepared.

I was under the impression we had Sasha for more than just next year.

Yes obviously, but I'm saying, that the Seniors next year combined also the competitive environment for PT, will start both Sasha & all the new guys off on the right foot...work ethic wise.....and all the players will rise and fall in the future accordingly based on how they carry on with that in the future.

I totally agree. However, 5 star players don't join a team to play 10~12 minutes. Even some 4 star guys expect to start right away. Most 4 stars wouldn't mind sitting on the bench at the likes of Duke, UCLA or UK, which we aren't quite the same. Some wouldn't mind playing at a smaller conference if it means starting right away. Some just don't have the grades.

Simply put, "no minutes" thing is either a deal breaker or at least a disadvantage.

Eastern is coming here to play the point. I know he's open to other positions, but CMP has stated several times that he's a point. I could see PJ coming off the bench next year.

I tend to agree with Nojel being the starter but not at the beginning of the season. I see it something similar to Carsen getting into the lineup because of his effectiveness.

I think it's almost impossible to tell which recruits will buy in and which won't. Best to hold off any comparisons/judgments until we see them on the court!

No he won't. PJ is very efficient at the point and has earned his starting spot contrary to the dismay of some here on this forum. Unless PJ completely implodes, he starts all next year.

Who would have thought CE would be starting over Haas?

Sasha= Weatherford
Another reach by Painter
Weatherford wasn't the shooter that Sasha is. While I'm not sure I understand the Sasha signing because of our depth at the spot & who we're after, but I'm okay with signing a shooter.

He will start next year but fairly or unfairly a lot will be judged with PJ regarding what we do in the tourney. Bottomline is that is being "efficient" enough? I would love to see him have a great March and bring Eastern off the bench next year. Again, he may be unfairly scrutinized going into next year if we bow out early and start slowly next season.

Also Spike playing more of late might be a tell on CMP regarding whether he is absolutely 100% sold on PJ going forward. I'm not speculating at all here but I do believe it is not totally guaranteed PJ is the face of the team next year solely playing lots of minutes.

I agree... I wouldn't be surprised if we see an even more equal split in the NCAA. Spike is starting to come on & has the tourney experience, while PJ looks like he's ran out of gas the last 3 games.

Seems obvious to me that we just want to get Spike up to speed coming back off the injury so that he can step in and play as needed. I don't think it's an indictment of PJ whatsoever.

Regarding his minutes, I also wonder if Painter is giving him some extra rest heading into the end of the season.

Not sure if PJ is the face or not but that kid has proven a lot of people wrong in his time at Purdue.

I don't think it is either.. PJ has meant as much to this program the last 3 year as anyone & has given us more than anyone could have expected. That being said, Spike's experience could be important for a team that has collapsed at the end of our last 2 NCAAT games.

Bet you anything he doesn't.
Wouldn't bet on it either, but PJ has the maturity to be a kid that comes off the bench & be just as effective. If him & Eastern are =, CMP will probably go with the younger guy. I'm not saying PJ will lose alot of playing time, but look what starting has done to CE's confidence & CMP has shown over the years, that he's not afraid to start freshmen over upperclassmen.

Sasha= Weatherford

Wow. Weatherford couldn't even score in high school. I see NO comparison between his game and Weatherford. Sasha was targeted as a shooter. Painter has good luck with recruits when he selects these guys. Smith, DM, Cline are all examples of that.
Why do you think Sasha will be different after his RS year, and an additional year behind Cline?

I doubt Eastern starts. But yes he is coming to play PG. A senior PJT with his assist/TO ratio is not coming off the bench. If he does, and you are right.....Purdue will flat be awesome as this means that Eastern turns out to be one of the best PGs in all of the B1G - because he would have to flat out be, to unseat a senior PJT from his starting role.

Agree that they're not the same type of prayer, but predict a similar exit as Weatherford. Sasha is underhyped for a reason. Glad the Evansville purple aces didn't steal him from us.

BTW Smith? What a joke. He should have never been allowed to put a Purdue jersey on.

BTW Smith? What a joke. He should have never been allowed to put a Purdue jersey on.

Smith scored 9 a game as a senior, had over 2 threes a game, and was like 43% three point shooter. I think he was second in all of the B1G in threes as a senior? Not outstanding, but not shabby either. And to say should never have wore a Purdue jersey is way over the top.

Without seeing much of him, I'm expecting our newest commit to be like Dakota. Is this accurate?

I think he's a cross between Ryne Smith, Ryne Cline and Dakota. They all had significant development to make in order to earn playing time. I mean if I told you 3 years ago Dakota would be one of our best defensive players, starting, etc. - you probably would have laughed. It's a testament to his work ethic. He has a physical ceiling, but you can make up for it in so many ways. The same thing for Ryne Smith.

There's no guarantees with anyone - but Sasha's career development will be dependent on him. If he works hard, he can earn playing time.

I think the one big advantage he will have is he will be able to redshirt, something those guys were not able to do because of some depth issues. We basically threw away one season for Ryne, Dakota, etc. - something Sasha won't have to do.

Wow... Not bad. Wonder why I remember him sucking so bad.

He also turned into a half-good defender. We had a really good defense his last couple years if I remember right.

I will have to admit I was wrong on PJT early in his career as a frosh and even into last year when he wa getting trapped all the time. Just did not see it.

And after the last 2-3 games I will also admit I was wrong on Spike. I really liked his last 2 - 3 games.

BTW - ChoiceBeef - you a cattleman, or your handle just another admiration of Swanigan?
